Do we still need to have this segregated from the general forum for it's non-FOF related theme?

It seems like some potentially good information there that is being missed since most of the viewing audience is here.

I'm going to say no, since I didn't remember that separate forum even existed.

It would be great to move all those posts here, and change the nickname of that forum to Werewolf Only! and move all the WW threads there. And possibly make that a non-post count zone as well.

But then I would miss all the deep thoughts that the two of you offer me on a daily basis.

I think the idea was to get the game information in one place so that it would be easier to wade through, but the area never got the viewing mass to make it fly. Over time, people just started posting game impressions in the general forum and the game/pc forum area died a slow and silent death.

I'd say one of the following should be done:
1. Kill the area and fold it into the general area.
2. Make the pc/console game discussion area more active by having moderators move pc/console discussion threads to that game area when they are incorrectly posted in the general forum.

If we went with #2, it would probably take some time before the posting built up over there, but I think it would come with time.

Given the "everything goes in one pile" nature of this board, I'm guessing that it's probably just easier to kill that area and pull the stuff over here.

I'd be happy to do #2 if need be.

Er, I mean GB's option #2.

I don't recall when the separate forum was originally made and for what reasons, but it doesn't make all that much sense on this board to have a separate forum about console games, while leaving something like Werewolf in this forum. It seems like console games are much more closely aligned with something we would discuss in the general discussion forum of a text sim sports game messageboard than Werewolf.

And I'm just picking on Werewolf because it's the easiest "other" topic to group. I'm not saying we need another forum for Werewolf, but if there's going to be one, that makes more sense to me.

Don't forget those damned Hot or Not polls! They should have their own forumn!

Bad logic. If the PC gaming area is a dead zone, moving the posts there won't necessarily mean the people will go there to post. People post on General because that's where most of the people here go to. Moving posts would in effect kill most of the posts.

There's a good bit of PC/console discussion already going on on General. Why not keep it here along with the political posts and the Werewolf posts? What harm is it doing here anyway?

That forum area is useless unless we are forced to post there the "All right boys..." threads.

On other boards I visit, a locked thread gets left behind when someone posts a thread in the wrong area. That thread leads people to the correct area. After a while the habit kicks in and people figure things out.

But yes, you're right, just moving the thread would probably kill it.

I think the original idea was not so much for the sake of pulling the discussion out of the general area, but more for organizing the information so it would be easier to use later. The goal, I think, was to have an area that a reader could go to and see a list of discussions and impressions on a lot of games. By putting them in one place, you'd be able to browse through discussions on games you hadn't heard of before. In many ways, I think the intent was similar to our FOF Strategy area.

If we did go with option #2 (moving the threads), it'd probably be helpful to have someone go through the general area and move some of the older discussions that we've had on games to the pc/console area. That would make a big step towards creating that information resource that was the original intent of the area. I'd be happy to help with this if there is an easy way to set it up to do so.

I don't really have preference one way or the other as to what happens, however.

My vision was that people would entitle their threads with the game title, so a quick sort could be done to find info on a given game. If I recall, this was before board searches sped up tremendously around here. Searches are much faster now, so I'm not so sure that forum has much use any more.

I'll investigate setting up a Werewolf-only forum, with post counts disabled, later this evening.

Ugh, this is seriously inconvenient. Now it takes way too many clicks to bounce from the general forum to the WW forum, and I can't peruse the general forum and see when a new post was made to a WW thread. Boo to the new home.

It makes no sense to segregate stuff when a board's as small as this one.

WVUFAN

I understand why you did it, Skydog, but you're casting a slippery slope. People are gonna start coming out of the woodwork saying anything not directly FOF related be given a different forum ... Hot or Not Polls, Political discussions (which is the one that REALLY needed its own forum), anything with a reasonably high post count that people don't want to see on the General forum. The more you separate the different discussions, the more things people are gonna want to separate.

The sole reason why a discussion topic is given it's own forum ... the "General" populace don't want to be bothered skipping over it, and people are gonna say "X" needs it's own forum.

I do agree with Blade, though -- if WW threads are non-counting posts, so should Hattrick.

BrianD
09-27-2006, 01:16 PM
I don't see how it is a nuisance to skip over one WW thread where there is so much general crap in the general forum.

This is what I don't get. At any given time, there's approximately 1 WW thread out of 50 (depending on your settings I guess) on the main page. What's the big deal? Segregation = the death of that particular topic. Will political threads be killed next?

This also won't help to remove the "player needed" threads because people won't bother to read the warewolf forum if they aren't in an active game.

People are gonna start saying "If WW has it's own thread, so should Politicals, or Hot or Not, or XX type of thread". Again, it's setting a precedence that isn't the best one to set.

Plus you're alienating a core set of people by making the WW threads non-post counting, as if WW games are somehow less worthy of a post than some other inane posting on the general board, ie, a parody post gets counted, but WW posts do not.

I think we should eliminate post counts altogether, because who really cares.

I don't think Werewolf should be weeded out of General Discussion. I've never read one, but they don't bother me. I pretty much just ignore them. I could see having a political forum to keep all the bickering in one place (especially with an election coming up).

I think the only argument for the pc/console discussion area now would be for situations where you're looking for ideas for a game to get. I've found a bunch of great games on other boards that I never would have searched for (didn't know they existed) because all the game information is in one area and you can browse through it. With game information scattered in the general area, it's easy to miss those discussions.

One other thing you can do in vBulletin is create a subforum to the main forum, keeps things from getting too spread out.
