View Full Version : Is it time to turn off post counts for the whole forum?
Kodos

It seems like they are actually a concern for some folks. They don't matter at all to me, except for post count joke opportunities. I think it'd be better if that stat disappeared entirely just to eliminate any heartache in the post count debate.

WW threads were moved to a seperate forum and all posts past and future in them no longer count toward user post counts.

Here's a post that counts. We should have an official post-counter whose job it is to decide if a post counts or not. :p
So do posts in HT forum count?

I voted the first option, because what I would like wasn't quite represented there (it was closest).
I would suggest (if this is possible) that posts be counted up to 1,000, so we can see who the new posters are, but then when it hits 1,000, it disappears or is replaced by MAX or something like that. Maybe have a title change at that point, too (Grizzled Vet, I guess).

I rarely notice post counts, but I like them when I see an unfamiliar name and am trying to assess how active they have been on the forum. I think it helps, to a limited degree, in trying to assess credibility in certain circumstances. It may also help newbies get a sense for who the most frequent posters are around here, to the extent they care.
I guess it helps to give some context to the FOFC world is what I'm saying.

This won't end well.
No, it won't. There seems to be a small group of people who for whatever reason don't like to see the word "Werewolf" in a post, are incapable of doing what the majority do and either participate or ignore the threads, and want to make them in essence second class citizens.
Nope, it won't end well.

That's cool. First time putting someone on it, so it's new territory for me. he just really pissed me off, and on a regular basis with his trollish behavior.
I'm cool with people not liking WW threads, and I myself have only played in a total of 2 games (2 1/2, really) including the current one, but when you're posting just to be a complete and total dick, like Hell Atlantic seems to do with EVERY SINGLE post, it just ticks me off that he's always gonna be safe no matter what he does and others who have been much less of a dick than he is have been banned or ostrasized.
In any case, I'll take your suggestion to heart, Schmidty.
i totally agree with you. i am a dick. i post just to be a dick with every single post indeed. it's just a cry for help. i feel insecure. you WW guys deserve better, here and in life. i just feel sad you won't see this sincere and heartfelt post since you have me on ignore. :(

Then either remove post counts, or understand that someone playing in a WW "contributes" to the board just as much as someone posting in the Maximum Football thread or a Hot or Not thread, or any number of the thousands of non-FOF related discussions here. Those people deserve their post counts, and so does people who play in WW games.
In my mind, there's no difference between them. They should count just the same as any other kind of non-FOF discussions.

It's a symptom of the attitude of a small group of people here. Saldana said it best in another thread ... the same people who bitched to Skydog about WW threads because of elevated post counts are the same ones saying they don't matter.
Note I'm not pointing my finger at you, VPI, so don't take it that way, it's a general statement. The post counts to me doesn't matter in as much as they're a symptom of the overall problem.
1. Move the WW posts to another thread, because they don't belong.
2. Remove the post counts for those posts, even though they should count just as much as the other useless threads on the board.
3. Hope that the WW players go away, because they're not worthy to hang with the "cool kids" in the general discussions.

I just don't understand the negative attitude WW player are taking...if I were involved with something popular enough to get it's own forum, I'd consider it a award...or a mark that the game has "made it". After all, players now have a place to post strategy, discussions, new ideas, etc without having posts get lost i the shuffle of General Discussion. I mean, FOF MP league all have their own boards and they're more relevant to FOF than 95% of the posts across FOFC. Should we try and move all of the discussion for all of the leagues into this General Discussion forum?

The point is more that our posts no longer count, and by implication it means that WW doesnt warrant the same level of respect as all of the outlandish crazy things that happen here. There has got to be another option.
Why can't we treat the post count as character in a MMORPG? Think about it. You start out with only a New Thread Button and with each level, you get more wonderful posting options and moderating powers:
500 posts - Change forum color scheme
1000 posts - Signature
2000 posts - Edit and Delete button
3000 posts - Quick Reply button
4000 posts - Standard Reply button
5000 posts - Quote button
6000 posts - Multi quote button
7000 posts - Smilies
8000 posts - Advanced HTML features
9000 posts - Private Messages
10000 posts - Select your own user title
>10000 posts - Various moderating powers to smite all they dislike.
But it wont be easy. There can be various things to drop or improve your post count.
Voting on the losing side of the hot or not threads (-500 posts)
Voting on the winning side of the Hot or Not threads (+150 posts)
Habitual threadjacking (-500 to +500 as determined by the Dark Council as some threadjacking is entertaining while others are not.)
Being the first one to call out, "This will not end well" in a rapidly declining thread (+1000 posts)
Cheating in the FastFL again (-5000 posts)
Joining the FastFL (-2500 posts)
Losing in the FastFL while you are cheating (-10000 posts)
Pinging Skydog (-500 to +500 points, depends on the entertainment value).
Etc. .....

I think someone said this in the thread on the WW board: Cluttering up the GD board is not the reason those threads were moved. Skydog doesn't think those posts should "count" in people's "status." It has nothing to do with the two threads that would be on the board (I'm basing that on what others have said...I honestly never noticed them), it has to do with the hundreds (thousands?) of posts in them. It is Skydog's opinion, as owner and operator of this board, that those shouldn't count. Therefore what he wants, he gets.
It's time to crap or get off the proverbial pot.
That said...I think getting rid of post counts is a good idea, and it really has nothing to do with what's gone on today.

That we allow those in the GD (and contribute to post counts) but not a sensible game like WW just doesn't make sense.
I may pulling this out of my ass again, but I fear the heavy hand when a new FOF/TCY is announced/released. Maybe they can create a separate FOF/TCY forum and leave GD for discussing a whole variety of things (except for drunk guys and molesters :) ).

It seems like there are 2 issues here that should be discussed separately.
One is post counts. I don't care if we get rid of them, but if we have them, I'm in favor of all posts in all forums counting. Since they don't matter in the big picture, I don't really understand why they shouldn't count in some circumstances but count in others. As I said back on page 2, I see some value in post counts as context of the board life in general that is helpful to newbies and f'in elitists alike, but I don't care enough about post counts to be deadset against getting rid of them. Consistency is all I am looking for.
The other issue is what belongs in the General Discussion forum. To me, "meaningless" or "stupid" one-off threads are not a problem. That is the very definition of "general discussion." Each is usually a single thread and doesn't take up space. If we were to create a separate thread for every hot molester or every Daivd Winters quote, then I could see a problem. But they are all neatly packed in a self-contained thread and are a minimal intrusion (if at all).
Plus, they are on a variety of topics. So, trying to corral those and move them to another forum makes no sense to me. The thing about the WW threads, or the Hot or Not threads, or the Hattrick threads that makes them prime candidates to be moved to another forum is that they are easily segregable. That's it. Maybe we need to have a "Serial Thread" forum where stuff like that gets posted, because of all the stuff posted in this forum, those are the ones that can truly "muck up" the board at times. The alternative is to just ignore them, but if there is a concern about clutter or streamlining the GD forum, these threads could easily be moved.
As far as having a separate Political Forum, my only concern there is the dividing line between discussion of current events and political debate. I just don't know that we want to take on constant monitoring of a thread that starts as a news topic and evolves (or devolves) into partisan bitching. Those types of threads are not easily distinguishable.
And that's my $.02 on all of these issues.

The reason WW threads were given their own forum is becuase the software cannot handle not counting certain threads in a forum against your post count. You can only turn of adding posts to your count, on a whole forum.

I think we should leave post counts on, but permanently ban posting any mention of them.

I think that the post count should remain, but become hidden to yourself and all other posters. The exception is that only the moderators can see your post count, nobody else. And by moderators I mean Max Kellerman.
