One of my fellow military members recently brought Lost Season 2 to "the office". My job almost instantly got comparisons to pushing the button when those episodes started showing.
I am surprised I hadn't thought of that. The main way I know I have something to do in regards to my "main mission" here is a loud beep every second or so from a computer. The beep can't be silenced until I press certain buttons, basically acknowledging it. Kind of funny, now that I think of it.
Two days ago, I had a not so bright individual come in to get trained for this vitally important job. He is replacing our second shift guy, sadly. I wish it were me. Anyhow, I tell him this job is easy. Listen for the beep. The computer will beep every 108 minutes. When he hears it, press 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42. Then hit execute.
I figured he wouldn't believe me, but he answered, "Really? That's it? Why every 108 minutes? That seems kind of weird."
Surprised he hasn't caught on (because Lost is on the screen), I tell him I don't know...that when I came in to work here, I was told to keep pressing the button. I asked why, and I was told it didn't matter, I was just saving the world.
Then he punches me in the arm. He finally got it.
