So in the first game of the 2006 MLB playoffs, the Oakland A's beat the Minnesota Twins 3-2 behind 2 solo HRs from Frank Thomas and some great pitching by Barry Zito. Great news for the A's since they won when Santana was pitching for the Twins... but they'll still mess it up in Game 5 (if it gets there).

oops, I forgot the first round is best of 5.

And spoilers tags are for dumbasses. A thread discussing a specific topic is cleary going to have the latest info possible in most cases. Guys who bitch about it should go wash their pussies.

Ksyrup
10-03-2006, 03:16 PM
For live sporting events, I think the request is pretty much ridiculous. I can at least see the argument with regard to TV shows or movies, but you have to assume people are going to discuss games (as we have done for years) in real time. Even if I miss a game, I refuse to watch it on tape-delay. It's over, I missed it, and I'll just watch the highlights and/or read about it.

WSUCougar
10-03-2006, 03:27 PM
I was speaking specifically to the fact that these are day games and some of us don't have the luxury to watch them live. In the Tivo era, many people watch sporting events after the fact.

Personally, I don't give a squat, but I didn't think the suggestion would be met with such rabid disdain. So, whatever...have a blast.

Cringer
10-03-2006, 04:12 PM
Any thread, sporting or TV show related, if I go into it not having seen the game or the episode that was on last night, then I should expect discussions about said sporting event/episode possibly ruining it if I have it taped or not. If I have it taped to watch, I shouldn't be going into that thread. If people can't figure that out for themselves then they are mentally challenged.

It's like watching Sportscenter before you watch the game you recorded, ten bitching because they didn't put up a flashing **SPOILERS** warning before the highlights of each game that day.

Pujols with a dinger to give the Cards the lead. Take that spoiler.

BTW, anyone see Pete Rose on Letterman last night saying Howard should get the MVP, and Pujols could be awarded the latin player MVP. The crowd was silent as can be. It came out fairly racial to many people I am sure.

I don't really blame them, but they could at least make one of the Twins-As games a later afternoon game.

Nope, the runner was on first. Hunter was trying to be a hero and it bit him in the ass, just like the last time the Twins-A's played in the ALDS (Ray Durham hit an ISTP homer that Hunter missed then). Not only that, but he just sat there and didn't even make an effort to run after the ball, leaving Cuddyer to go get it. Brilliant play.

Good approach Randolph is taking with the pitching staff. As everyone knows, the Mets pitching is thin to say the least, he seems like he's just gonna get what he can out of his starters and rely on the bullpen. He took Maine out in the 5th, only giving up the 1 run, and went to Feliciano and Bradford (then pinch hit for Bradford in the bottom half of the inning) to finish it.

For those Dodgers fans here, or anyone who might know, why is Penny in the bullpen? He's not starting in the postseason?

Back spasms, and the series is short enough that he's not necessarily needed as a starter in the first round.

Likely to be Lowe, Kuo, Maddux, Lowe, and then we'd see about a 5th starter (Billingsley, perhaps).

Incidentally, the Dodgers gave this game away today. That baserunning blunder in the second cost them a minimum of one run, possibly two, and then Penny coming out of the bullpen was less than sharp. If Joe Beimel hadn't cut his hand in the hotel room last night, I think there's a strong possibility the Dodgers win this one 5-4 even with the baserunning brouhaha.

Not to take anything away from the Mets, but I feel like the Dodgers pissed away a game they should have been able to break open early, and now we need to win with a rookie on the mound tomorrow to avoid going home down 0-2. :(

Big W. Zumaya definetly is proving to be a legit Superstar. He absolutely embarrassed Giambi out there today. The entire pen was awesome and Verlander showed some moxey getting out of some tight spots. I am optimistic for the two games in Detroit because we have the advantage in pitching and the CoPa will keep some of those balls the Yanks hit in the park. I'm not saying we're going to win either but I do now expect this to go five.

I had to read that twice before I understood what you meant. It looked at first like you were saying you didn't expect to win either game, but that the series would go five.

With Randy Johnson having a herniated disk and Jaret Wright pitching Game 4, things are looking nice for Detroit.

Zumaya hasnt pitched 3 games in a row ever so if he pitches Friday he wont pitch Saturday. Walker has pitched 3 innings the past 2 games so the bullpen as a whole might be a little short. Detroit needs Rogers to go deep into the game on Friday.

I would have to think a starter will be dealt. Verlander isnt going anywhere obviously, Rogers is 41, Maroth was injured most of the year and Miner/Ledezma seem like long relief/spot starters. That leaves Bonderman.

Humberto Sanchez needs to be promoted from AAA and Andrew Miller isnt expected to be too far away from the big leagues.

I would think Robertson doesn't have a tenth of Bonderman's value after the Yankees series. Even before, I would think Bonderman's stock was way higher.

So I'm seriously considering trying to go to either Game 1 or 2 of the WS if the Tigers make it. Anyone know where to get decent tickets, or know someone who knows someone...?

Out of curiousity, I just googled it and found the site gotickets.com. First thing that comes up shows $165, and I'm thinking, "That's not bad at all." And then I realized that was just for FUCKING PARKING PASSES! I'm really not looking to spend $900-1,000 a ticket. As much as I love sports, I don't enjoy live sporting events that much. Not even close. I could buy dozens of CDs with that cash!

So, is that realistically what I'm looking at? Because if it is...hey, at least I've got HD TV.

Cheapest thing I've found in a quick search was $540 each at stubhub.com
(Mezzanine 218, Row 18, 2 seats)

Another site ranged from $850 in the upper deck to $3200 for something in the lower level.

In my experience, your best bet would be to find somebody who has access to tickets from work or whatever & try to get scrounged in that way. Otherwise, I'd say you're probably looking at at least $500 per.

A month after being sidelined for a week with a sore right wrist, Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7630) has developed the same problem and is unavailable to pitch.

"I'm just taking it day-to-day, but it's sore," Zumaya told USA Today on Wednesday. "It's the second time I've had this. It's a little worrisome.
"I'm a big factor on this team, but I couldn't pitch with it. That's all I have to say," he said.

Zumaya saw a doctor both Wednesday and Thursday, but the Tigers aren't sure when he'll be able to pitch again.

In September, Zumaya was diagnosed with tendinitis in his right wrist and received a cortisone shot.

Team trainer Kevin Rand believed the original problem arose from the repetitive act of pitching. Zumaya, whose fastball travels more than 100 mph, said he thinks it comes from the aggressive way he holds the baseball.

Glavines gotta go on short rest since the Mets only have 4 starters on the roster. I was pretty surprised and a little ticked off Willie put Floyd on the roster. He's been hurt all yr for the most part and he just re-injured this achilles in the last round. Joe Buck said something like "Floyd played such a huge role in the Mets success this yr". I wish I coulda punched through the tv and hit him in the face. I love Floyd, but he was like Pedro this yr, woulda been nice to have him healthy and playing, but they will make due without him.

Am I wrong for thinking Green shoulda caught that ball? I know he did save a HR, and usually one would be happy with that, BUT, he did make it to the ball and, judging by the replays, he just closed his glove too early and missed it. Oh well, guess I am nit-picking here.

I am a fan of Mota, I think hes got good stuff, but he always seems to do very well for the first few hitters, then just cant finish it.

It's funny...I wasn't worried about how losing this game would affect the series because Carpenter was the pitcher we were going up against, as I would be fine with the series being tied headed back to STL. But then we got to him, knocked him out early, and still lost the game. Not anywhere near as okay with it as I thought I'd be.

It was a great game. As Logan said, I too am now a little worried. They knocked Carpentar out and had the lead with the bullpen and blew it. The Mets' bullpen, in my mind, was gonna be key to them winning this series and they haven't done all that great of a job thus far.

Now they gotta go back to St. Louis tied 1-1, and IIRC, Perez is gonna be starting a game which is scary, Trachsel is no gem tonight (thank god Suppan is on the mound) and Glavine is going on short rest.

This looks like it's gonna be a much better series than many thought.

I'm curious, do other stadiums "rock" like Shea does? When I was at Game 4 of the NLCS in '99 I remember the stadium literally rocking, as Logan put it, when Olerud knocked in the 2 game winning runs off Rocker. I'm sure Logan would agree here, you can actually feel the stadium tremble, do other stadiums do this or is Shea just that old?

Am I the only one who thinks the Mets were fucked no matter what Beltran did?

As Beltran was in the on deck circle, I was watching him rubbing pine tar way up the bat, and after the LoDuca walk, La Russa grabbed what looked like a rulebook as he was stepping to the plate. I think that might've been on his mind.

By the time Beltran stepped up, he had pine tar halfway up the barrel of the bat, and last I checked, that was against the rules and grounds for calling the runner out. No matter what Beltran did, LaRussa was going to have grounds to protest and have him ruled out. Shades of George Brett.

Time for everyone to already write off the Cardinals like they did against the Mets. The way I see it both teams still have to win four games. While this had no effect on our series with the Red Sox or the Astros with the White Sox, I do have to say that the all-stars determining home field advantage is pretty fucking stupid. (I wouldn't mind Detriot having the advantage due to a better record either, but give me a break that a worthless exhibition is a integral part of the balance of every year's World Series)

I rewound it, and you're right, at least on the first part. It looks like the pine tar went at least 60% of the way up the bat. However, whatever LaRussa grabbed looked pretty thin, and was bent in the middle like a greeting card. It didn't appear to be a book, unless it only had a few pages.

SackAttack
10-19-2006, 11:14 PM
I didn't get a very good look at the book thing. My first thought was it was a lineup card, but it seemed to have pages, so when I saw the pine tar going up Beltran's bat, I wondered if La Russa had something up his sleeve.

I'd call it closer to 70%, but at that point we're really quibbling over semantics. The point is that it was an illegal bat and if Beltran got a hit and any of the Cardinals were paying attention to protest, that game was over anyway.

That was a hell of a game - the whole ninth I was thinking that if they got Beltran to the plate, it'd be absolutely the right way to finish it. I hope he wasn't looking for that either. With the bases loaded, you figure they are not going to try to get him to chase a ball in the dirt or something that risks a WP or PB, nor are they likely to come too far inside and risk hitting him. I could see him looking for something a little outside or high; however, that pitch was not even that close to being a ball, so it would be hard for me to believe he simply thought it was. I think he was looking for a fastball and just got fooled.
