I haven't seen this posted here at all, figured I would give all of you a heads up. Due to the (shocking) fact that the Recording Industries conspired price-fixing for about 5 years, at least, anyone who bought a CD between 1996-2000 is entitled to between $5-$20 from the settlement, depending on how many people apply. Go to http://www.musiccdsettlement.com/english/default.htm for more details plus a form to fill out if you want the money. I don't know too much about this, but I know it is legit. I am not sure if you will get massive amounts of junk mail, but hey, you will anyway, might as well get paid.

A gigantic waste of time...
I'm sure we've all made up for an price issues with downloading.

If too many people sign up which I assume has happened already, all the money gets donated to charity (its in the fine print), so either way its worth taking two seconds to do it.

HFP- the article I saw that pointed this out said they were having trouble finding people, and were having to buy ads in newspapers, etc. to get the word out.
rkmsuf- Of course I would never do anything like that.;)

Of course, if I remember correctly, the money that's LEFT OVER gets donated to charity. The lawyers still get most of it.
Did anyone see any money from this?......

it's still in the courts.
can't remember why it got held up, but it's not resolved yet.
The reason i asked was because I signed my dad up for a bunch of those free magazine subscriptions.... and he was like.... "I'm sure I'll get those when I get the check from the RIAA.", which I also signed him up for :) I completely forgot about it......

On the one hand, the RIAA got caught price fixing and is fightign a settlement tooth and nail. On the other hand, they are suing 12-year-old girls for downloading music.
Why doesn't the RIAA just sue themselves and leave everybody else alone. Thieving record weasels.
Compact Disc Antitrust Deal Finalized
(AP, 12/04/2003 10:51:00PM)
By Sarah Coffey
A federal judge has approved a settlement of a lawsuit filed on behalf of millions of record club members who alleged they had been overcharged in a price-fixing conspiracy.
Under the settlement signed Wednesday by U.S. District Judge D. Brock Hornby, the CD buyers will receive vouchers to give them 75 percent discounts for new compact discs, which they will receive with no shipping or handling charges.
Some members will be eligible for as many as three discounts, said an attorney for the plaintiffs, Michael Jaffe.
Hornby approved a $143 million settlement in a related lawsuit last July that accused major record companies and large music retailers of conspiring to set minimum music prices. Under that settlement, 3.5 million people are to receive checks for $12.60 and libraries and schools across the country will get $75.7 million worth of music CDs.
The lawsuit was signed by the attorneys general of 43 states and territories and consolidated in Portland in October 2000.
Defendants included Sony Music Entertainment, EMI Music Distribution, Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corp., Universal Music Group and Bertelsmann Music Group, as well as retailers Tower Records, Musicland Stores and Transworld Entertainment.
In agreeing to the settlement, the companies denied any wrongdoing.

Which is precisely why I'll never buy another CD. I haven't bought many in recent years anyway, and frankly, the fact that the RIAA is guilty of both price-gouging, and suing 12 year olds and 89 year old grandparents over file-sharing (which is, admittedly, a crime) has pretty well convinced me that I can find better places to spend entertainment dollars, like DVDs, video games, and well, text sims. :)

i think you had to fill out the form by march in order to get your $12.60 check. i read that somewhere, but i can't remember the link. but it still might be worth trying.

The online form had to be filled out several months ago. By Dec. 8th, if your form was "approved" you have to mail in some form they sent ya a few months ago. It basically says you agree to a settlement, which you dont know the terms, and waive your ability to sue at a later date.
Read a few posts up..... it was settled on Wednesday..... doesn't look like anyone's getting any money....
Edit: poor spelling

Anybody else find it ironic that the slap on the wrist for the RIAA amounted to pennies on the dollar, but that they're seeking the full $250,000 fine for each copyright violation in question?
Theft is theft. Why is the penalty for theft so much lower for a corporation than for an individual?
