Watching the Mets game here and they just finished singing God Bless America. This reminded me the other day when I was doing my internship at a High School down here in MD, I was talking with a guy about baseball and somehow this came up and he made it seem like he had no clue what I was talking about when they sing God Bless America in the 7th inning. I thought this was something done throughout baseball, not just NY.

No, it's almost purely a NY thing.

Most of baseball did the God Bless America thing in solidarity with New Yorkers then. Really only the NY teams do anymore.

I can't really talk much about what I think of it now without dragging out comparisons that may or may not be apt, so I'll just leave it at "No, it's pretty much a purely New York thing."

I'm pretty sure that was post 9/11 in ny area only.. i also believe most ballparks did that for the remainder of their seasons that year in lieu of take me out to the ballgame

they do it in Boston, too.

Right. Which is what I said, but in editing out the things I didn't want to say I kind of left a neutered, awkwardly-phrased remnant behind.

Most of baseball did that in the 9/11 aftermath in 2001. Only NY does it anymore.

At least last year, some teams did God Bless America on Sundays, and TMOTTBG the rest of the week.

So Boston and Minnesota do it also...Sack, does that mean you can change your smug attitude about it?

They sing it in DC at Nats games too - frickin' annoying if you ask me.

In Houston and Arlington they play "Deep in the Heart of Texas" during the stretch... :)

Isn't that what the national anthem is for at the beginning of the game? How long is it necessary to play God Bless America during games? And why would God specifically bless America anyway?

I agree Cotton-Eyed Joe is not necessary but God Bless America isn't necessary either. Does playing a song during a baseball game make one more patriotic or something?

I've been to more than a few Tigers games where God Bless America was sang during the 7th inning. It wasn't every time, but I'd say of the ten or so games I've attended the past two years, I've heard it five or six times.

I'm pretty sure its done b/c we still have troops over sees and so that we don't forget about them while pigging out on $5 hotdogs.

While we're at it, stop singing the national anthem before the games. It's a game for crying out loud, shut up and play ball.

For game 1 at Shea, the anthem was performed instrumentally by some guy. Sounded great. Last night, I'm at Shea and we get an ugly chick who was introduced as "American Idol runner-up" (but not from this past season...that girl was hot. And p.s...do you really want to be introduced as "American Idol runner-up?"). Anyway, her shrieking gave me a headache. So, moral of the story, I'll be perfectly happy with less singing of the anthem, and more playing of the notes.

Is reminding them through a song accomplishing anything other than some patriotic rah rah at a baseball game?

They played it at the last game of the Giants' season -- but that was a Sunday, and I don't remember them doing it at the other Giants' games I was at this year.

what they do at the metrodome during 7th inning stretch:

1. Take Me Out To The Ballgame
2. God Bless America
3. Kirby Puckett Tribute Video

Yes, it gets long.

I could care less either way, but I just realized that I've NEVER heard the national anthem in any non-sports context.
