I'm not a big boxing guy, but this giant interests me. I've never seen him box so I want to see if this guy is for real. He is 44-0.

Burt Sugar writes up a nice prefight eval of these fighters.

Or am I the only one who cares?

I'll definitely be tuning into the fight.

He isnt very good. I watched the Ruiz fight and didnt think that Valuev had won. He is really slow, as expected, and doesnt have great power compared to with what you would expect from a 7'0. He can definitely wear someone's legs out leaning on them though.

Besides that he sweats a ton and has a super hairy back, its seriously gross. I still will be watching im sure. As long as it doesn't interfere with Diego Corrales (40-3) vs. Joel Casamayor (33-3-1) on Showtime. The first show starts at 9pm with an undercard the second show starts at 10pm with an undercard so I should see most of both cards.

This is the type of analysis only available around here.

I should have mentioned that on the undercard of Valuev vs. Barrett is a great rematch, Tomasz Adamek (30-0) vs. Paul Briggs (25-2), for a Light Heavyweight belt.

Their first fight last year was a bloody brawl. Anyone watching Valuev vs. Barrett might want to watch the undercard as well.

You should check out YouTube. I saw a couple of his matches a few months ago at YouTube.

I've been looking forward to this fight for a while.

Boxing fans take note that Showtime is having their free preview this weekend, so this fight should be available to everybody.

Not to threadjack but Corrales screwed himself.

http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news?slug=ap-corrales-casamayor&prov=ap&type=lgns

As far as Valuev is concerned, I havn't seen any of his fights, I don't think that he is anywhere near the caliber of fighter that Maskev or Klitchkov(sp?) is. I think that Ruiz probably did beat him, and Ruiz isn't anything special at all.

Tyson - Valuev would be fun. Not a close fight, but still fun in a freak show circus kind of way.

Corrales still looks pretty trim in that picture. Hopefully for him he added the 5 pounds to his weak chin ;)

Nice scenario that now presents itself...

Corrales has been stripped of his title. If he wins he does NOT regain the belt.

If Casamayor wins he does win the belt.

If Casamayor loses he still gets to fight for the belt vs. a top ranked contender next fight.

I Wonder if the WBC would rank Corrales as the top ranked fighter for the belt thus ensuring another Corrales vs. Casamayor after tonight. Probably not. I wouldnt be surprised if the WBC keeps Corrales out of their rankings for a year as punishment. I'm ignoring the claims of Corrales that he is moving up to 140 after this fight, he said that before this fight as well.

Several hours later dola ;)

So what are people going to watch tonight? I decided im going to watch HBO and tape Showtime. The networks never update on each others broadcast so no concern of spoilers happening.

I'm watching Showtime until the HBO Broadcast starts, then I'll switch over (and keep recording Showtime.)

Hoping that the main events don't overlap, but I'm far more interested in Corrales vs. Casamayor and will watch that if they do.

Someone who is watching the Showtime bouts live, quick open another thread so I dont have to leave FOFC for fear of spoilers :)

Dola, that was mostly said in jest, some idiot friend will call me with the results(if they are worthy) either way.

I'll stick to HBO discussion in this thread. I've always wanted to see Shaq box. I'm guessing this might be the closest approximation that I'll ever see.

I doubt Valuev's talent but he still should beat Barrett pretty easily im thinking. Barrett was down 5 times vs. W Klitschko(the bad one).

My opinion of it too. Barrett is a journeyman fighter in a subpar weight class and Valuev should beat him relatively easily.

Valuev is very slow, and I have seen video of a fighter beating him pretty badly late in the fight (Valuev had built up a big enough point lead to still win the fight). Valuev has no defense, but Barrett has no power and isn't that fast. I think Valuev will knock him out in the middle rounds.

Wouldn't you love to see James Toney fight Valuev?

Valuev = no defense
Toney = well he used to be great, he is still a + on defense
Valuev = so slow he is probably punching me while i type this
Toney = well he is fat but he can jab

Im scared that near the end Valuev would just hit Toney on the top of the head like one of those "Whack The Mole" games.

Apt anology on the "Whack a Mole" since a round mole is what Toney has looked like his last few fights. :D

I can't remember if there was a thread about this game or not, but search isn't turning up anything. Have any of you guys played Universal Boxing Manager? Is it any good?

I have not. I haven't seen a boxing game that was anywhere close to a real life boxing simulation. WCBM was ok if you ignored the bugs and the lack of customer support. But thats as close as I have seen.

Looks like he shaved his back for this fight.

Is Valuev wearing knee pads?

Why would a boxer need to wear Knee braces?

mtolson
10-07-2006, 10:32 PM
100+ pound weight difference. This should be illegal. Barrett is going to get hurt bad.

Eaglesfan27
10-07-2006, 10:33 PM
At his size, I wouldn't be surprised if he has some knee instability. I imagine he is wearing them for added stability.

If Barrett had any amount of talent, he'd be winning this fight easily. Valuev is so slow and predictable.

Valuev must be faster than he looks as Barrett has tasted the canvas a couple times tonight already on punches he has missed. Either Valuev is faster than he looks or Barrett is real clumsy.

I agree with the announcers, good stoppage by Barrett's team.

He's clumsy, and he's an average fighter. In any other HW era, he would never even get close to a title shot. But then again, neither would Valuev.

Both. This had the making of ending real bad. Barrett was a couple of punches away from being hurt really bad. Overall, this was a pitiful fight.

How old is Larry Merchant now, 103?
