I'm, OF COURSE, not saying that what Haynesworth did was in any way OK or acceptable.
I'm not even saying that I, as a personal matter, have a problem with a team attempting to recover signing bonus from a player when that player's actions prevent him from playing football.
I am saying that if I were the NFLPA, I would be keeping track of all of these instances of signing bonuses being taken away and use that as ammo next time the collective bargaining agreement comes up for review.
The NFL does not have guaranteed contracts (as a fan, I am VERY happy about this). But, really, what incentive does the union have to go along with this policy when more and more teams are treating the only real bone the players are thrown in this regard (signing bonuses) as just another form of non-guaranteed compensation?
