SMU suspends QB Willis indefinitely

11:13 PM CDT on Friday, October 6, 2006

By KATE HAIROPOULOS / The Dallas Morning News

SMU starting quarterback Justin Willis will not play against UT-El Paso today and is suspended indefinitely because of a violation of team rules.

Brad Sutton, SMU assistant athletic director for media relations, would not comment on specifics about the violation. Coach Phil Bennett did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Junior college transfer Corey Slater is expected to start.

Willis, a redshirt freshman from Denton Ryan, traveled to El Paso on the team charter around lunchtime Friday. The decision to suspend him was made late afternoon or early evening Friday.

Willis practiced with the team this week.

Willis had led the Mustangs (3-2, 1-0 Conference USA) to a three-game winning streak. He is 80-of-118 for 841 yards. His 12 passing touchdowns are the most for an SMU quarterback since 1996 and the seventh-most in a season. Willis also rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns.

After Willis helped SMU pull out a 33-28 win at Tulane last week, Bennett lauded Willis for his competitiveness and said he had come "light years" since his first college game Sept. 2 at Texas Tech. Willis accounted for 337 of SMU's 359 yards vs. Tulane.

Slater, 6-2, 220, is 7-of-18 for 54 yards. He got most of his playing time against North Texas, going 5-of-10 for 47 yards and an interception. He came to SMU from Dixie State in Utah, where he went 62-of-133 for 963 yards and four touchdowns.

Makes me feeel much better about tonight's game. UTEP's pass defense has been horrible and Willis has been quite good so far this season.

Man.. The cheating and resulting Death Penalty in the '80's still haunt the Mustangs.. Karma Baby.

UTEP's gotta get it going here soon, with Houston and Tulsa looking pretty tough in the West of CUSA. This is a game where the Miners can get on track and build some confidence. The two game road trip to UH and UT is only a couple of weeks away.

14-3 now. Wake's looking very good.

No. I think there are going to be two unbeatens, and there might be three not counting Wake. The other problem is the one loss teams. Would a one loss Florida, Auburn, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan or Ohio State be ranked below a 0 loss Wake? I don't think so. They win out, they'll get to the BCS because of the auto bid for the ACC, but they won't sniff the championship game.

I think Wake's schedule, especially if you include Clemson, is clearly better than WVU's to this point. WVU earned their pre-season ranking by returning 15 starters from an 11-1, Sugar Bowl winning team, though and haven't trailed in a game in nearly a full year (last Nov. 2 vs Louisville), so I think they are entitled to their spot in the rankings.

Well now that Auburn lost, let's bring this back:

"I've about had it with this playoff deal," Tuberville said after a lengthy, emotional argument for a playoff. "We all understand in our conference how tough it is. In our conference, that's about the only chance we'd have to make it."

Doesn't help when you don't win all your games.

A. TWO-TEAM TIE

Head-to-head competition between the two tied teams.
Records of the tied teams within the division.
Head-to-head competition vs. the team within the division with the best overall record (divisional and non-divisional) Conference record and proceeding through the division. Multiple ties within the division will be broken from first to last.
Overall record vs. all common non-divisional opponents.
Combined record vs. all common non-divisional teams.
Record vs. common non-divisional team with the best overall Conference (divisional and non-divisional) record and proceeding through other common non-divisional teams based on their order of finish within their division.
The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the last weekend of regular-season games shall be the divisional representative in the SEC Championship Game.

B. THREE (OR MORE) TEAM TIE

(Once the tie has been reduced to two teams, go to the two-team tie-breaker format.)
Combined head-to-head record among the tied teams.
Record of the tied teams within the division.
Head-to-head competition vs. the team within the division with the best overall (divisional and non-divisional) Conference record and proceeding through the division. Multiple ties within the division will be broken from first to last.
Overall record vs. non-division teams.
Combined record vs. all common non-divisional teams.

The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the last weekend of regular-season games shall be the divisional representative in the SEC Championship Game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the SEC Championship Game.

They did get blown out by USC, but Mustain wasn't the starting QB then. They have won 4 straight since then (yes, including close ones against Vandy and Alabama), but the team is gaining confidence. They could win that SEC West this year.

Arkansas's winning streak has nothing to do with Mustain. They had a huge win today and Mustain's line? 7 for 10 for 87 yards and a TD. Mistake free ball, no doubt. But let's give credit where credit is due, the Arkansas running game is the only offense and the defense is playing fantastic.

Problem for Florida is they still have games at Auburn, vs. Georgia (at Jax) and at Florida State left, as well as the SEC Title Game if they get there..

What if they lose only one game all season? WIth this schedule, they may deserve a title game bid, but may not get it..

WVU plays ugly, giving up 134 penalty yards, but still wins 42-14 over MSU. Lack of discipline will kill us against a good team, as in this game, it gave MSU a ton of extra downs/chances.

Steve Slaton was workmanlike with over 200 yards rushing + receiving.

Good thing you don't play any good teams this year. Well maybe 1.

Well, Reggie Ball has been coached in a very specific way that affects the completion percentage - there's only been the one sack this game. Reggie is very aware of throwing the ball away rather than taking a sack - if you look at 13-25 completion, and sub in three sacks instead of incompletions, then it's 13-22 which isn't nearly as bad. He's also ran for 84 yards today.

In other seasons, I'd generally agree with you about the dumb plays - but he does have a 2/1 TD/Int ratio this season (10/5), and has cut down his dumb plays a lot. The first pick against VT was absolutely horrible, but the second one was not a bad play from Reggie - if you've got Calvin in one-on-one coverage down the sideline, I'd love for him to throw it up more often then not. That said, I don't get ESPN-U and the place we went to to eat and watch didn't get it either (despite us calling in advance to check), so I listened via radio and pretty spotty at that.

The only team screwed was Washington - the Huskies were lined up and ready to go as soon as the refs positioned the ball, but the officials then (rightfully) paused for a conference to determine if there should've been more time on the clock (there should've been), and they then started the clock running before all the refs were even in place, and they started the clock differently than they had all game - prior to that play, the ref positioning the ball would hold it and then indicate to the Husky center that the clock was running.

Pac. 10. Refs. Fucking. Suck.

Now, to be clear, this isn't a screw-up on the level of the Oregon/Oklahoma game. In that instance, if the refs do their job, Oklahoma has the ball and can run out the clock to win the game. In this instance, if the refs do their job the UW has 4-5 seconds to play with and they get one last play off to try and win the game. No guarantees that the Huskies score, but they should've at least had a chance.

All that said, the Huskies had their chances in this game. Yeah, it's nice that they played USC as tough as they did, but they certainly didn't do themselves any favors with their horrible punting game (bad snaps and poor blocking which led to a shanked punt and a blocked punt) and Roy Lewis dropping an interception right in his hands with a lot of daylight in front of him on USC's last field goal scoring drive.

I'm proud of the team for playing as well as they did, but it's damn fucking frustrating that they got screwed out of one last play by horrible officiating.

As a Penn State fan and a referee I have to agree that the Pass Interference call was not the right call but after being on the short end of calls a few times in the past in Big Ten games I don't feel as bad.

I refuse to buy into the fact that there is some big conspiricy in the Big Ten for Michigan and Ohio State to get all the calls like many other PSU fans seem to believe. Referees are human and that was a bang bang play, plus if you watch the replay the DB bangs Butler right as the ball is released from Morelli's hands, so technically that is PI, but in this case I think you have to let the kids play unless it is something so obvious you have to call it.

A. Incorrect, Michigan

B. Who would you rate ahead of them. Since I have Michigan in the title game with USC, I'd rate them equal. Florida? doubtful, good, but not better. Missouri? Boise State? Louisville? West Virginia?
