NEW YORK (AP) - YouTube Inc. struck deals with CBS and two major music labels Monday as the popular video-sharing Web site races to befriend content providers and avoid copyright-infringement lawsuits.

The separate agreements with CBS, Vivendi' (V)s Universal Music Group and Sony BMG Music Entertainment come less than a month after YouTube reached a deal with Warner Music Group Corp.
...
CBS Corp. (CBS) said it will provide short-form video content for a CBS "brand channel" on YouTube's site starting this month. It will include news, sports, Showtime and prime-time programming. Among the offerings CBS said it plans to offer are short clips from top programs including "Survivor," as well as mini-previews for new fall shows.

YouTube and CBS will share revenue from advertising sponsorships of CBS Videos, CBS said.

There is alot of user generated content on YouTube but there is a TON of copyrighted content also.

Between user generated content and copyright content, how much does it cost to post a video? And how much does it cost to do a google search? Nothing for nothing indeed.

Sometimes I just love it when Mark Cuban gets on a roll. Here's his take on today's acquisition.

I only heard about it when people were posting copyrighted material, and I'm guessing I'm in the majority.

Mark Cuban is right far more often than people give him credit for.

He can come across as an arrogant blowhard from time to time, but it ain't braggin' if you can do it and all that.

The sucky thing about this, is cool stuff like the Apache video, or a ton of old Toto videos will now probably be pulled since copyrights are apparently violated. I see that they want to protect their property and whatnot, but honestly it sucks that basically there is no type of public domain anymore for things that are essentially value-less.

If they were truly "value-less" you wouldn't be upset.

It would be a facinating time to be the lead copyright/IP attorneys who are going to work for Google on this issue--in terms of litigation, lobbying for changes in the law, and cutting deals with content providers.

By the time it is all said and done, you will have probably changed the face of copyright law.

"The Google partnership provides a tremendous value to people across a campus community, allowing them to develop greater search literacy to find information within academic departments, across disciplines and even on campuses in other locations."
"Education is a key area for Google Enterprise, and Blackboard is well established in that market. Google is excited to have Blackboard as a partner in the Google Enterprise Professional program. We're looking forward to extending the power of Google search to even more educational institutions and users," said Kevin Smith, program manager for Google Enterprise Professional.
An exciting outcome of the partnership is the integration of the Blackboard Learning System(TM) and Google Scholar. The integration of these two products, through the Blackboard Building Block for Google Scholar, enables quick and easy access to millions of scholarly references directly from courses within the Blackboard environment. Google Scholar provides a simple way to search for scholarly literature including peer-reviewed papers, theses, book abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations. The Blackboard Learning System is used by millions of students and educators to access academic materials and resources at any time and from any location.
Blackboard will also offer a set of Google OneBox for Enterprise modules through a Blackboard Building Block for Google OneBox. This new integration will enable targeted searches of an institution's course catalogue, organization catalogue and learning objects repository. Google OneBox for Enterprise is a feature of the Google Search Appliance which allows users to retrieve real-time content from various data sources across their institution. This new solution, available to all Blackboard Academic Suite(TM) clients and Google Search Appliance customers, provides the most comprehensive search tool for the Blackboard platform.
As a Google Enterprise Professional partner, Blackboard will also offer consulting services to assist academic institutions who want to leverage search capabilities within and across their organization. Blackboard Global Services will work closely with client schools to gain a deep understanding of their institutional information access goals and develop strategic and tactical search solutions to support them. The Blackboard Building Block for Google Scholar and the Blackboard Building Block for Google OneBox are both available for free download in the Blackboard Building BlocksŪ catalogue at www.blackboard.com/extend (http://www.blackboard.com/extend) and at Google's site for external developers, code.google.com.

No 8-K filed yet, as best I can tell. I think under the new rules it has to be filed by tomorrow. I'm curious to see how long the lock-up period is for the YouTube holders. Maybe that's been reported, but I haven't seen it.
