Well, until recent years...Dallas Mavericks. I got to see a lot of really bad Cowboys and Rangers teams until the '90's came around. I guess they're returning to their old ways. The only team that hasn't let me down yet is the Stars.

Umm, have ya'll ever hear of the UTEP Miners? They have had two winning season in the past 25 years. Every year we Miner fans think that we got the recruits who will turn everything around for us, but it never happens. This year's golden child is Carson Palmer's little brother, redshirt freshman Jordan Palmer. Due to UTEP tradition, I'm sure that he'll either tear both ACLs and break his throwing arm on the first down of the season, or he'll just suck because he plays for my Miners...

The other teams that immediately come to mind would be the Cleveland Cavaliers and Arizona Cardinals. If you're talking about teams that can actually put out a decent team but will never fail to dissappoint when it counts...Boston Red Sox and Patrick Ewing era New York Knicks.

I disagree- every year I can delude myself into thinking that getting rid of Hundley for Karros and Grudzelanek (or however you spell his name) or whatever boneheaded move can at least help the team.

But I can't do that here in KC. At least for the Cubs, there is a universe where they could win it all. Granted hell is frozen over and Kerry Wood and Mark Prior both win 25 and strike out 300; Sosa hits 80 homers, etc- it's unlikely but there is a remote chance of that happening. But there is absolutely no chance of the Royals doing that and even if all of their young pitchers catch fire, they still make .500, maybe.

Finally win a playoff game after 33 years and follow-up with the two of the most heartbreaking seasons in their history. Worse than the Rams making a last second field goal to snatch the last playoff spot in 83.

University of Minnesota Football

Can't recruit instate and have a terrible stadium. Able to get the best player from St. Louis, but can't land one of the top 3 instate players.

At least the basketball team has a chance. Once the NCAA probation is over they'll get back to cheating again and be back in the Final Four in no time.

All other favorite teams give plenty of hope though, so I suppose I can't really complain. Vikings on the way up with Tice at the helm, Twins will only get better, Wild are the perfect model for an NHL franchise, Wolves have one of the top 5 players in the game who may take them past the first round some day.

Hey, did you enjoy us sending our crooked coach up there to the great white north? There's a reason he was run out of town and we had to suffer through Terry Allen, who was a good man but a bad recruiter/coach/coordinator/and now taxi driver or whatever. That said, I'd rather have 5 more years of Allen than one more year of Mason. I'll take a clean program over a corrupt decent one any day. Then again, there is no reason why a school can't have a clean and pretty good program and that's all we ask for here.

SI

02-11-2003, 10:00 PM
If only there were some way to get rid of Mason. The whole stadium issue hurts the program, but you'd think the man would be able to do something. His best year here was with a senior class that was brought in by his predecessor, and it's been all downhill since then. I don't think the U will ever come close to winning the Big 10 with him there.

U of M had a corrupt plus losing program a few years ago. The womens basketball coach got fired for quite a few NCAA rules violations a few years ago, and the team had won 3 big ten games over the last 5 years or something.

What is it with girls? If guys cheat, at least they win and have something to show for it.

Chicago Cubs

Iowa Hawkeyes

Aside from the Hawkeyes winning consistently in wrestling, all of these teams raise my hopes and then smash them. The Chiefs many playoff losses, Suns vs Bulls, Cubs on Opening Day, etc.

mckerney, Mason is a joke as head coach. I don't think there is a coach at any other school that big that obviously doesn't wanna be there. The year Ohio State cam calling, he pretty much quit recruiting, needless to say that recruiting class was great. And there is nothing better than watching college football at 10 in the morning with a few of your closest friends in the "metrodome/good seats still/always available.

And about Monson, for a guy who could recruit guards to gonzaga of all schools, his recruiting of pg/sg here has been horrible. now i haven't played HS ball in 5 years and even then i wasn't good, but i am still waiting for an offer because i think i could complete with kevin burleson sp?.

Well, my FU basketball team returned 4 starting seniors, and was picked to win the conference and make the NCAA's. We're currently 7-16, pretty close to last place.

And my Braves consistently seem to be moving that way with moves that make no sense baseball-wise. Millwood for Estrada? Mortaging the team for Maddux? Mike-I-look-like-i'm-wearing-a-pound-of-makeup Hampton? Paul-contract-year Byrd? Jason-never-live-up-to-potential Marquis? Bobby-can't-win-in-the-playoffs Cox?

It's easy to criticize the U, but are you guys buying tickets? Supporting the team in anyway besides watching on tv? It's a sad state of affairs where the hockey(and basketball) program has to carry the load for a big time athletic program. I've supported the hockey team for a long time and there was nothing sweeter than finally getting to the top last year, but there is nothing worse than the bandwagon fans we have in this state that do nothing but bitch.

You want a new stadium? Fill the one you are playing at now, and playing at for basically peanuts. If a team is winning in Minnesota, it would draw 100,000 in a Kmart parking lot, if the team is not, it wouldn't draw 10,000 in the most beautiful stadium in the world, indoors or outdoors.

Recruits have no interest in playing here because there is no support for the football team. Support the team, fill the dome, put pressure on the coach to upgrade the schedule, then start worrying about new on-campus outdoor stadiums.

Phoenix has a few teams like this.

For pure, stink up the joint year after year, I'd have to say the Arizona Crudinals. Several years ago, when they were trying to blackmail the area into building them a new stadium by threatening a move to El Lay (a town that would never have been stupid enough to want them), I was offering to help pack the moving vans.

As for teams in the get so close to greatness they break your heart mold (like the Red Sox, for example), I think the Phoenix Suns are a fine example. This team's two most famous games are losses...everybody remembers the '76 finals, and the Gar Heard shot heard round the world, but the Suns lost that game. Ditto game 6 of the finals in 1993 against the Bulls.

Cards4ever,

I live in fargo, but my best friend goes to the U. I attend about 2 or 3 football games and a few more basketball games. basketball attendance is great, i also assume hockey is as well (i am not a hockey fan), but football is horrible. I attend as much as work and travel allows me, but why would anyone go to the dome when there is no atmosphere. no one even tries. they should have more tailgaiting, mason should be more public. I just think that for football to succeed, mason will have to pump up the program to the public, not refuse interviews, not refuse to go on to the local sports station and discuss the recruits they brought in. he does maybe 2 functions a year for the public. He barely even tries to get people excited about the program.

Hang in there .... things will get better.

My soccer team (Brighton) used to be a fairly fashionable old first division (equivalent to todays Premier League) team, over the space of 10 years they fell down into the lowest professional division possible, nearly went bankrupt, sold their ground and were finally rescued from bankruptcy by a chap who bought them for the princely sum of £1 (plus agreeing to take over numerous debts accrued by the club).

Since this takeover things have looked up for us and we've now risen to Division 1 (just below todays Premiership) and might even get a ground of our own one day (we currently have 'loaned' an athletics stadium off the local council).

All together now ...

Mason is on KFAN during the season quite often, and he was on last week talking about his recruits. The football program also had something at their practice facility on signing day where Mason talked about and showed films of the players they signed.

A valid of criticism of Mason is his scheduling, that I can buy into. But the PR thing I think is not valid.

As I said before, the same thing was said about the dome when the Twins were lousy, then they start winning and they talk about how loud it is in there and what a great atmosphere. I think the Twins deserve a new stadium, but the Vikings and Gophers should stay in the dome unless they want to pay for a new stadium on their own.

Mason maybe does alright in the cities, although the fan does complain about how hard it is to get him on, but if you look at most successful programs, they reach out into the state. Fargo radio stations constantly are trying to get him on for a short interview, he denies them. Now if he wants to recruit better in state maybe he should shop himself to the public better in state.

Well said. One of the worst things Mason did was a few years ago when he was up for the Ohio State job, pretty much campaigning for it while recruiting was going on, then shortly after he didn't get it he comes out and says he wishes he had taken the job with Georgia. Good luck getting players to come when you openly admit you don't wanna be there.

As far as Monson goes, I'll cut him some slack if the gophers get a tourney berth, the guy did get Rickert away from Arizona.
