... baseball coaches wear uniforms? Could you imagine Pat Riley wearing shorts and a jersey on the bench? Or Art Shell wearing a helmet on the sidelines?

It's a tradition that will never die...most of them do look like tools, although guys like Ozzie Guillen and Joe Girardi look like they could still get out on the field and play an inning or two.

Coaches are not allowed on the playing field unless they have a uniform on. The occasional manager, such as Connie Mack, did not wear a uniform, but he had to send another coach out to pull pitchers or to talk to them on the mound.

I'd guess because the earliest "managers" were basically players who served as captain. Then managers played less and less until not at all, but the tradition stuck.

In the same vein - how cool would it be if the NFL could remove the giant bug up their ass and let th SF coach wear a suit on the sidelines like his daddy did?

It was a George Carlin bit a long while back actually. He used Woody Hayes and John Wooden in the bit I heard so that will tell you the approximate age of this version.

He should have just worn the suit one week looking very nice, recieved a hefty fine, then showed up to the next game wearing everything XXXXL with his 49ers boxers showing and his cap on sideways. :D

Reebok has an exclusive marketing deal with the NFL, so if they don't make it, coaches can't wear it.

So a Reebok tailored suit line is in order.

Someone brought up that idea in the original "Why can't Nolan wear a suit?" thread. Personally, I think it would work.

Girardi looks like he's in better shape now then when he was a player.
