Didn't see a thread on this yet (though my eyes aren't what they used to be).
Did y'all see the fight in the Miami vs. Florida Whatever game? Kicks, punches, helmets, crutches, flips...wild, wild stuff.

A big ass fight doesn't need it's own thread? Doesn't Jim need to see this so he can be sure to put stuff like it in TCY2 before Christmas (or before). :)

If you have the audio on, listen starting around the 1:56 mark of the clip. Ex-Miami player doing play by play. If that guy ever gets another job doing commentary it would be a travesty. Absolutely ridiculous.

Is that the same clip where the guy is pretty much saying that Miami was in the right for fighting? ("You don't come into the OB.. blah blah blah..)

Would there be any precedent for that? A guy leaving a big time college program to coach in the NFL, then going back to that same college?

Not sure how you define "big-time college program", but Mike Riley went from Oregon State to San Diego and then right back to Oregon State after getting fired by the Chargers.

Am I the only one who thought that announcer's comments were completely hilarious? Sure the guy deserved to be fired, but you can't deny his enthusiasm for the Canes. I love listening to announcers who are fans of their teams and get fired up during the games. Half the announcers in sports today make me want to fall asleep.

I'm just speechless. How is Merriweather not suspended multiple games?
And the last quote from the Miami prez is simple insanity:
This is not the old Miami. This is the new Miami. We've always known we can't make mistakes. We don't get a break," Shalala said.
Never liked Miami that much, not it's full blown hatred. With all due respect to huve, I hope they get thrashed every big game they play from here on out. Classless, simply classless.

I can't fathom a University (and a major university at that) President claiming they're getting a raw deal here.
Just idiocy. If I was the board I'd be considering removing him, Coker, and anyone else I can get my hands on.

At least the FIU leadership is handling this with some responsibility.
Miami is more of a joke now than they ever have been. Its just unbelievable.
I pity the poor non revenue athlete who gets kicked out of school for shoving someone. Meanwhile, the inevitable next footbrawl (mean time between brawls for Miami is 5.2 games) will again result in appropriate one game suspension. The Trustees should be embarassed for not firing Coker on Monday and shutting down the program for at least the year, if not for next season.

coker is probably a decent guy but 3 incidents in 7 games leaves some doubt as to whether he is in control of that program. miami has also looked below par on the field this year so far. i am sure they are already getting their list together as to who will replace him
1. greg schiano- i think he may say no to the offer.
2. butch davis
3. steve mariucci- top candidate at michigan state.
4. nick saban - it's a little early but i think he is begginning to see the error
he made and within 3 years he will back in the college ranks.

I don't know if I blame Coker for not being "in control". I'm not sure a warden with a full compliment of guards could control the "student-athletes" that are the hallmark of the UM program.
Where he fails IMO is in the quality of people he recruits in the first place.

I somewhat agree with you here.
However, I belong to an organization for W&M Football where on Mondays there is a meeeting where we see highlights, etc. and the coach answers questions before we do that.
He mad ethe comment essentially of, "I don't believe incidents like that happen in a vacuum. They happen because you don't discipline for smaller, earlier incidents." And, I think he has a point there.
But, he also agrees with you to an extent when he says, "With the players we recruit, you'll never have to worry about an incident like that"
In fact, there was an incident last year with James Madison University that if a school would have done it to Miami it would have been a brawl, but we just brushed it off.

Agree with you and Samdari. I'd be firing everyone I could get my hands on as well. how in the hell do you make the "Aww, poor us, everyone picks on us" comment after that? How can Merriweather even be allowed to set foot on campus after what he did? Stomping on defensless players and he's still there?
It's been awhile since I posted that and my anger or disgust hasn't dropped even a little. I can only wish bad things on this program and a university that allows such garbage to go on unpunished.

wait a minute - you are not sure if you blame Coker for not being in control of the program it may just be a problem with the athletes he recruits! i think you may want to rethink that statement. if you recruit criminals in the first place and i think he has been called on that in the past then you are in a position of trying to control a program that has criminals in it. that is very difficult so the point is that a coach should start controlling his program during the recruiting process.
additional fallout to this story is that i think Miami's recruiting is going to be negatively affected because responsible parents of prospective recruits are going to be turned off by this highly publicized incident. whoever takes over this program will have to really take a good look at the character of the athletes they are recruiting. i am sure in the hiring process this will be an issue with any prospective coach the administration considers.
waltwal,
Actually, with the players that Miami recruits, this may actually help them.

Meanwhile ...
Waltwal -- I think you got tripped up in what I was trying to say in the first place, 'cause I think we're sort of actually getting at the same thing. There's been several references to Coker "losing control", my point was that it doesn't seem to have been there to lose in the first place. And if he thought he was going to "control" what goes on in Coral Gables then he's basically, well, stupid.

ok i see what you were saying. but here is some inside info.
coker is gone at the end of season - that's no surprise. but the initial replacement list is a little surprising.
1. schiano
2. tuberville - there must be some talk that tommy is still a little upset with
petrino incident. but this still seems a longshot
3. davis
4. mark richt- another longshot but apparently he has some ties to miami.
my initial thoughts are that davis would be the guy out of this group that would be most inclined to take the job. there might be some problems tho. if a high profile guy does not take the job i think the admin. will put some restrictions on the type of player admitted into this program plus there may be a number of guys that might lose their scholarships. in the long run this will be a good thing but it might be something that might discourage coaches up front. i am just not sure that a high profile will look at miami as a great choice at this point. is there another jeff tedford out there?

But, as I'm sure you know by now, Thomas isn't just a regular announcer who's a fan and a homer. He's a former Miami player. It just goes to show how this university's system supports this sort of thing, and how the behavior of the players this weekend wasn't a fluke.

A lot of people will argue about whether schiano would take the gig. I don't know enough about him or the Rutgers program or anything to comment intelligently on that.
But... Tuberville and Richt? I just don't see any reason at all for either of those two to take this job. If you look at Miami, Auburn, and Georgia over the last 5-10 years (maybe not 10, but definately 5) Auburn and Georgia are both clearly better programs than Miami and they don't have the MAJOR negative view nationally that Miami has.
Those two just make no sense to me. I don't know what outside info you have, but this really seems like a "want" list to me more-so than a realistic list of who will replace Coker.
