View Full Version : HS Football Power Rankings

I was curious to see where the top 25 HS football teams are located (for this week, at least)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/highschool/10/17/power.rankings/index.html

Probably not too surprising that Texas has 4, Ohio has 3 and S. Carolina, Florida, California with 2 each. Five other Southern states have 1: LA, MS, NC, TN and AL but none in GA?!? But there are schools from Oregon, Maryland and Indiana on the list. I really don't know how they make a list like this but I thought the geographic distribution was interesting.

The one from MD is probably Dematha. I think it is a national law that they be ranked in the top 25 in any highschool rankings. Even if it was a Left Handed Lesbian Nazi Hookers that have been Abducted by aliens and forced into weight loss programs volleyball league.

Uggggg, Southlake Carrol made the list......

I absolutely hate them. They are one of the fastest growing schools in the state. When I was in HS (less than 15 years ago) they were 3A (a mid range size here). Now they are one of the biggest 5A schools in the state. My Sophomore year in highschool, they brought their Varsity and Junior Varsity team to the playoff game. They all looked 6-4, 250 I swear. We were tied 21-21 at the half then proceeded to lose 42-21. Ug....did I mention I hate them?

I work in Southlake....the parents there are the most rich, egotistical, annoying jackasses that are absolutely in love with their team...I graduated high school (not Carrol) in '04 and i knew half the Carrol football team and tons were roided out...Their quarterback and coach lived down the street from me before he got the job there and they are complete idiots...I HATE them and the school...they recruit players, which is why they are so good.. Their running back is Nate Newton's son, Tre', he is actually pretty cool...also his dad seems pretty well changed, he comes in to my work all the time...but ill finish this by saying I can't stand them.

Buc: not surprising at all. Those are *team* rankings. The talent in Georgia is pretty spread out all over the state, and top teams get upset. This year in particular, only two teams in Georgia's largest classification are undefeated, and neither is a "name" school at all. Calpreps.com ranks every single school in America. They've got Northside-Warner Robins (2nd-largest classification) at #61 in the nation, for the highest-ranked school in Georgia.

Do you think that applies to most of the HS football factories (except that they could be rich or poor)?

Bucc -- this seems to be a particularly down year for HS FB in GA. A number of the traditional powers are slumping (Valdosta appears bound for a sub-.500 year), and there's continuing signs of creeping parity.

The recruiting part is probably true for most...I don't think it matters whether they are rich or poor but it certainly wont hurt them if they are rich

They have a pedigree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeMatha_Catholic_High_School#Some_Notable_Alumni) that helps put them there.

Southlake has been a power for a long-time, even back in the 80s before all of the big dollar housing developments moved in and it was farm boys on the football team. It is amazing that they've been able to move pretty much effortlessly from 3A to 4A to 5A in a 20 year period. They had a couple of years drop off when they went from 3A to 4A, but zero dropoff when they moved from 4A to 5A. And it wasn't the same coaches all the time either.

Anyone else wonder why we even have national HS rankings? I know some of these factories actually schedule the occasional game between themselves, but otherwise, there is really no legitimate way to even come close to comparing schools from around the country. Hell, it's hard enough to compare 100+ D-1 college schools.

What better way to advertise to the collegiate football factories and to enhance prestige? One would probably assume there's a lot of money involved, above-board and below.

well if you live in Keller you won't be close enough to Southlake...there is 4 high schools within a 15 mile radius here, in Keller there is 3 within 5 miles of each other...and if u want to move to Southlake, the houses are VERY expensive...ive seen alot of the areas and the houses are insanely nice...plus ive seen some of the pro athlete's houses here and they are also insane

I lived there for 3 years before moving to Eagle Mountain Lake. It wasn't the richest place I have ever seen. Southlake is so good because they refuse to build anymore high schools. Keller has what, 4 or 5 high schools and are roughly the same size.
I was on the football team that beat them in the late 80's before they went on that 100 game win streak. We beat them there when they were 3A.

On a side note, my cousin plays for Justin Northwest, and I will be attending the game this Friday to see him try to beat Southlake.

Miami Northwestern is a damn factory. All their best players are juniors and sophmores which is freaking crazy.

It's interesting, because while it may be a down year for "power teams" in Georgia, it's a tremendous year in terms of individual talent. Georgia is pretty well represented on the lists of Rivals' and Scout's top 250 lists, and you'll find both Georgia and Georgia Tech in the preliminary top twenty national recruiting lists, based largely on in-state talent.

My sister lives in Southlake. Yes she has a monster size house and is rich. Her daughter is only 2 though, so not stuck up...yet anyway.

On another front, this is my 14th year coaching and I had no idea what went on until recently (I never coached football or basketball, the obvious major culprits) when my high school happened to house the #1 defensive recruit in the country (actually two-way player). Now I know.

You would not believe the amount of recruiting (or maybe you would, these days) that goes on around this area- Dallas and environs, of which Southlake is a part. Football and basketball are just like used car lots in terms of the number of athletes that move around each year, ostensibly because mommy and daddy moved or divorced or lost a job and junior moved into his granny's house or in with his aunt.....

For that matter, I now know some other stuff that I wish I didn't of what goes on in high school athletics. My views will never be the same. Sad, sad.

oh yea i definitely know...i used to be friends with Riley Dodge, and he told me a few things his dad has done to attempt to get a few people to move to southlake, although he failed on a couple of them...its rediculous...not everyone is stuck up in southlake, i know alot that aren't, but there is a higher percentage of stuck up egotistical jackasses (to put it nicely) than them, and it doesnt help that i have to deal with them mostly daily...

Yep. It's different than usual (or at least feels that way), it's like more teams have 1 or 2 prospects instead of the usual suspects having several.

My alma mater lost to #11 by an extra point. In the next two weeks, they play # 9 and #13. The team they played last week was also ranked in the top 25 nationally by some polls, but they beat them and knocked them out.

That is a schedule.

I can honestly say that South Panola is really good. REALLY REALLY good.

The funny thing is there is nothing there. Yet they get these huge hulking kids from the fields or something that are just beasts on the football field.

Oaks Christian should just drop the Christian part and just put football. I believer there are 13 players with a Div 1 scholarship. Not to mention their starting QB is the top rated QB and their RB is the top rated RB.

Just Sick. The school has only be around for about 7 years

I got to see them play earlier this year and they are amazing. Its almost like watching a college team out there on the field. They just roll their opponents over. And to top it off, their RB is headed to SC. :D
Its just too bad their QB committed to Notre Dame.

Warren Central, the lone school from Indiana is my alma mater. (If you can even call a high school that) They have dominated for several years now, but weren't any good when I went there and sat the bench on the team. (JV was fun though!) Before WC it was Ben Davis who was always a powerhouse and got the national recognition. Back in the 80s Warren Central were 2 or 3 time state champions led by none other than local asshole Jeff George.

I just got back home from the Southlake Carroll vs Justin Northwest game where my cousin plays OL for Northwest. It was played at Carroll and had about 10,000 people there, since it was their homecoming. They won 42-28. Carroll pretty much controlled the game, they have 4 good receivers and Dodge at QB was solid. No pressure on the QB all night.

The interesting thing about the night was that I sat next to Nate Newton. His son is the starting junior RB for Carroll but he sits on the visitors side at games to keep from being bothered. People came up for autographs but he would not sign them. He talked my ear off the whole game, and ate sunflower seeds by the handfulls. I didn't ask him much about his criminal issues. I pretty much listened to his take on how teams should be Carroll.

I snapped a profile shot of him.

My perception as well. We have a player on W&M's basketball team from there.
