First up in the battle of the "Best Albums" is...

The Pixies - Surfer Rosa

Before the Breeders and Frank Black, there was this Boston quartet, playing hardcore's rush and terseness against the acoustic grit and the minor-key flourish of Latin pop. Their first full-length album is their starkest, harsh and trebly, with the drums right in your face, and songs edited to eliminate any note that's not absolutely necessary. Singer Black Francis yelping away about destroyed bodies and the river Euphrates, alternately acting cryptic and crazed. Kim Deal, then calling herself "Mrs. John Murphy," contributes the highlight, "Gigantic," a creepy anthem about childhood voyeurism. The playing is snarly and tricky but unfailingly tuneful, and the hooks come out of nowhere, hiding behind the noise, and bite down hard.

vs.

John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band

Decades later it's a little hard to appreciate just how shocking Plastic Ono Band was at the time of its release. Yes, John Lennon's first post-Beatles solo album is still a must-own for any rock fan, but decades of punk, metal, and grunge have desensitized our ears somewhat to the naked howls of despair that fill tracks like "Mother," "Isolation," and "I Found Out." In addition, "I don't believe in Beatles," the climactic line of "God," doesn't have nearly the resonance as it did around the time of the Fab Four's breakup, when such a sentiment practically bordered on heresy. And yet it's a testament to the high quality of Lennon's songs that Plastic Ono Band continues to be an incredibly moving listening experience.

The question remains... which album is better???

Ahhh... a debate we may get back to. Along with Led II vs IV and some mighty fine clash albums. Really could have added a 3rd and 4th option for additional albums by each group.

I chose Plastic Ono because I'd say a plastic Ono was so far less grating than a live Ono any day.

Trout

While I too love Breakfast of Champions and all the other works Mr Trout appears in this is a poll about music, not literature.

There needs to be a trout option and if it gets a majority of the vote, both get tossed into a pool of "out of the running" for a while. I just can't conceive of many lists where either get to be a top 100 album of all time.

Agreed. Third option needed here.

On a more positive side we've got nowhere to go but up from here. Although I could vote for the Pixies in a pinch I guess.

yes, a third option may be needed... however, since it wasn't on the list the Pixies have it.. I'll send out another poll later today... with a beloved trout option.
