As a Hoosiers fan, I hope Hawaii kicks the living daylights out of Purdue.

Looking at the boilermakers Defense, Hawaii shouldn't have a problem scoring 60+ for the 5th time this season.

When I first saw this thread, I went through a series of thoughts. They went as follows:
"Well, why wouldn't Hawaii be favored by 17?"
"Wait, does he mean basketball?"
"No, I just looked it up, and they're playing each other in football."
"Purdue still has a football team?"
"Let me go post something stupid on FOFC."

FYI the last time Hawaii played a team from a real conference they lost 17-25.

I go to Purdue and I am really glad I didn't buy season tickets.. On the other hand, they have won 8 games for how bad they really are. And Pumpy, they have had some really good years recently, along with sending several players on to the NFL.

Yeah, but if I acknowledge that, it kinda ruins the joke.

your right. we lost that game but totally out played bama. not an excuse though, a loss is a loss. But its kinda funny how most wac teams actually have a better pass defense then Purdue. LOL

So, do the kids from Hawaii get all that excited about going to a bowl game in their home stadium? Would seem kinda anti-climactic to me.

Wow , what a bunch of sissies.
Purdue football coach Joe Tiller said Tuesday he wanted no part of Saturday's football game at the University of Hawai'i and urged his athletic director last year to tell UH, "We ain't comin'."
Tiller, whose Boilermakers are 8-4, said the game "doesnıt make a lot of sense" for Purdue and he would not schedule UH in the future, even on a home-and-home basis.
The comments came during a media teleconference Tuesday morning where Tiller also said he had requested Big Ten officials to work the game after seeing UHıs controversial victories over Northwestern and Michigan State in 2004.

This leads me to ask something that I've always wondered about. After the debacle in Eugene during the Oklahoma-Oregon game, I'm really paying attention to coaches talking about an officiating crew's conference. My question is: Are officials expected to have some kind of bias toward teams in the conference they work for? Just because an officiating crew might work for the WAC, why would that make them want Hawaii to beat Purdue? What difference does it make to the officials? Are they more likely to be fired if non-WAC teams beat WAC teams?
I just don't understand it. Aren't the on-field rules the same for every conference? It's not like basketball where it takes six fouls to foul out in the Big East, but it only takes five in every other conference, is it? Even so, if the rules were different, there would still be some agreed-upon standard by which the officials would call the game.
I really don't see what difference it makes. What's the difference between a Big Ten official and a WAC official, or even a Sun Belt official? Why do coaches care?

They are just trying to make early excuses for getting their butts kicked.

Interesting comments... Is someone out there worried about their job security? Someone get one of these over to the Coaches Offices in West Lafayette pronto..

didnt bet a damn thing. sorry to dissapoint you.
BTW Hawaii defeated a big ten opponent, and proved they can compete in the big ten.
I Thought a lowly wac team would never ever be able to compete with the big ten???????

First off I think Hawaii is a good team, but they beat 1 Big Ten team that as someone said did not have a win against a winning team. Play the entire Big Ten schedule and see how Hawaii does. That goes for any BCS conference. It is a nice win for the Warriors but Purdue is in the middle of the Big Ten and Hawaii didnt exactly dominate the game. Have them come play in the midwest in November instead of playing at home. I'd like to see how they do then.
Anyway congrats nice win.

Tiller is right though. It makes very little sense for any Big Team to play at Hawaii. Doing so cost Northwestern a bowl game in 2004.

If you lived in Hawaii, would you want to travel somewhere like the "Rude Awakening in snow and sleet on the blue field in Boise" Bowl in December?

OK, if that's indeed the case (that officials are expected to have bias toward their own conference), do you have any idea why? Why would a WAC official care if Hawaii beats Purdue? I just don't understand.

The bookies I know are usually very forgiving on this sort of thing. If you "bet the house, farm, first born" on Hawai'i and they fail to cover, most of them generally say "ah, heck, they did win the game, so you can have all your money back."

I think what you're trying to understand is probably more attributable to ego than anything else.
"Hey, I work for the number one conference in the country" or at least "... for a better conference than you" can be pretty powerful if you're into that sort of thing.
Now, that said, how much bias really exists versus how much is feared/ perceived is a whole different question that I can't answer.
From my own, purely anecdotal, experiences I think I've seen people jobbed by their own conference officials nearly as often as I've seen signs of favoritism. I sort of figure that it's a two-edged sword, since familiarity does tend to breed contempt. There's also (more applicable to basketball IMO) the chance that officials will be more familiar with tendencies for players/teams they've seen several times, which is both a potential advantage ("I've seen him do that before & I already know its legal" or "He's a good kid, he doesn't cheat") and a disadvantage ("He does that every week & it's always a penalty" or "That dirty SOB holds on every play").

Thanks, Jon. That's probably as good a guess as anyone could make, and it at least makes sense to me. Now I can see where coaches might be coming from when they make these statements. I learned something today. :)

In my mind, 2 major reasons...recruiting, and bowling...if other teams in your conference are playing well, your conference gains more prestige with recruits. If some teams are poor, the league suffers. An example is the big east...many elite players shun the league in favor or the ACC/SEC/BIG 10 because of supposed power of the conference. Is WVU or Luisville worse then Florida/Tenn? Not sure, but their percieved that way by recruits.
The side factor is bowls..wouldnt hawaii want the teams they beat to go out and look impressive. USC's win over arkansas is much better viewed now that arkansas has done what they have done. Boise wants to win their games, then have their fallen wac foes go win big games to make boise look better.
Just my .02 cents

As opposed to Purdue's radio guys (the XM radio broadcast) calling us the Hawaii Islanders?

I am pretty sure they know what a sack is, unlike the Islanders.. It honestly sounded like the first game they have ever watched.
