Three years ago, I suggested to my wife that New Detectives would make a great fictional show. And then along came CSI.
With all of these ridiculous new reality shows coming up, we were brainstorming about a month ago about some new reality show topics, and I threw out the idea of a "Sleepless in Seattle"-type show where a single parent's kid(s) get to choose a potential mate for their parent. And then I read this today:
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Another reality show aimed at milking romance for ratings asks the question, "Who Wants to Marry My Mom?"
Five episodes of the NBC series, which the network said was inspired by an upcoming "Meet My Folks" special, will air in late spring. No specific air date was announced.
"The idea of kids choosing which mate is best for their single mom just seemed like a fun, natural extension of 'Meet My Folks,' " NBC executive Jeff Gaspin said Thursday.
"Meet My Folks" lets parents judge suitable dates for their children. A March 10 edition, "Meet My Kids," turns the tables by giving three adult sons the chance to pick their mom's companion for a Hawaiian vacation.
In "Who Wants to Marry My Mom?" the adult offspring of a single mother will decide which of several suitors will win the chance to vacation with their parent.
The problem with this show is it's "three adult sons" choosing for their single mom, which means she's way too old to be entertaining to the young demographic the networks want. I was thinking of a single parent in his/her 30's with younger kids, either widowed or just single. That way he/she and the potential mates are more along the lines of what 20-40 year olds would want to see.
I'm not sure there's much of a market for The Geriatric Dating game. Of course, at this point, you could slop shit on the table and call it reality, and people will watch.
