Manny Lawson with a beautiful leaping interception of Marc Bulger. Rams offense was moving pretty methodically on the Niners before that, though.
Edit: Challenged, but ruling on the field stood. What a great play.

A lot of quick scoring so far today.
Baltimore, New Orleans, and Arizona all scoring on first possession.

Vikings answer, C.Taylor 7 carries/53 yds & a TD. Now 7-7.

Boo. Swing pass to Gore comes up inches short on 3rd Down, and we have to punt. Jackson is running real well, and the line is providing him with nice holes. The Niners really need to step up.
Rams with a first down.
Vince

WOOO! Holt fumbles, returned for a TD by Walt Harris. He's the one that also caused the fumble.
Blech, should be challenged, not sure if it'll stay there. Holt didn't have possession for long, if he did.
Vince
11-26-2006, 12:29 PM
F***. Incomplete pass.
For the record, I think he DID have possession, but according to the rules, he's gotta make a move related to football, and he didn't. Boo.

Damn. Antonio Bryant (who isn't having a good week) gets called for a holding penalty to negate a 15 yard Gore run, we have to punt for a touchback. Blech.
Vick is going to beat some records today if he keeps running that way.

49ers fumble on the punt return.. 49ers are shooting themselves in the foot big time this game. The Rams aren't beating them, they are beating themselves.
Whats going on with Vick in the Falcons game? Im stuck with the 49ers game since I'm in San fran this last week.
Oh.. first play after fumble, rams run for a long TD... guess Rams are beating them too. 49ers need to pick it up if they are going to win this.

Ironically, that's why I'm not too worried. Our offense should have a bunch of points, so as long as we can eliminate the mental mistakes, we should be able to get back into this game. What does worry me is that Jackson is running all over us.

The Atlanta crowd booed the team after their first series in the 2nd half. Don't they know that'll hurt Vick's feelings. Nothing but a long run will take care of that, as long as they keep hitting FGs while the Saints score TDs.

When I watch players reaching for a ball on their tippy toes close to the sideline to get a first down, plays like the one White missed is just inexcusable; they're down 8 points and the Saints had the momentum the entire game, they HAVE to make those catches.

From Prisco:
Michael Vick (http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/235253) continued to show he's the best single-wing quarterback in the league, rushing for 166 yards against the Saints, second in league history behind the 177 he had in a game in 2002. It makes for wonderful highlight material, his zigzagging through a defense bringing a roar from the crowd every time he takes off, but it doesn't win games. Plus, it puts this high-price investment at risk far too much.
"He's going to be hurting bad Monday," said one Saints player.
So what does win? Look at the other team Sunday, where Drew Brees, (http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/235197) a short quarterback with a not-so-great arm, threw for 349 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions. It was the fifth consecutive 300-yard passing game for Brees, putting him on pace for the second-most passing yards in league history.
His passing has the Saints at 7-4 in the NFC South, one game ahead of the Carolina Panthers and two in front of the Falcons. The Saints continue to be one of this season's best stories.
"The quarterback is spectacular," Saints coach Sean Payton said after the game.
Funny thing is, he was talking about Vick. And he's right. He is spectacular to watch, his ability to escape pressure and turn a bad play into an amazing one. No one before him has ever done it like he does, but it's also a curse, since the legs are always an option.
Give me a quarterback like Brees who can read the field, make all the throws and check down to an open receiver when needed. In fairness to Vick, he did have passes dropped, including a couple of potential big plays, but he still is reluctant to wait in the pocket and make throws. He rarely checks down.
I think that's the difference. I love QBs who are not immobile but not those that are too eager to run without looking around. Having a QB that can escape being sacked or be able to gain good yards on a run is a good thing. But more times than not, I believe, one should look at the whole field for all possible receivers, even if you have to get out of the pocket to do so. McNair does this, so did McNabb, not to mention Elway and Steve Young.
There aren't very many who can do what Brady does and stay in the pocket and coolly gets off a pass while the pocket collapses. But for others, there are 3-5 potential receivers on every play and it's best to let them get the yards instead wearing the body out (and potentially causing fumbles or injuries) trying to do it all by yourself. Vick should have learned this by now.
ps. All receivers drop passes, like TO, but they will catch more than they drop.

Vick makes obscene gesture at fans

Falcons quarterback Michael Vick signaled an obscene gesture with his hand to the crowd near the tunnel leading to the locker room as he walked off the field following Atlanta's 31-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints Sunday at the Georgia Dome.
It is not known what triggered Vick's action. Vick was not immediately available for comment.
"We are aware of the incident," Reggie Roberts, the Falcons vice president of football communications, said. "We haven't spoken to Michael as of yet, but we plan to."
NFL vice president of public relations Greg Aiello said the incident had not been reviewed so there would be no comment from the league. Vick could face a fine from the NFL under the sportsmanship conduct rules.
For excessive use of profane language or obscene gestures, players are fined $5,000 for a first offense and $7,500 for a second offense. It is now known if Vick has any prior violations of sportsmanship policy.

What the heck is wrong with that team? Why do they suck so bad. It was not that the Saints won the game. The Falcons lost it.
Jim Mora seems like a likeable guy, and a pretty good coach. But he has totally lost control of this team. They had no discipline out there at all.

Just an observation from a neutral NFL fan...
Seems pretty obvious that the NFL's attempt to keep QBs safe has given us tangible evidence that players now consciously stop playing for fear of drawing a flag. What that dude on the Giants did looked ridiculous, but since he grabbed a scrambling-with-his-arm-cocked QB with his head down, he had no idea whether the ball had been thrown or not and had to assume that it had been thrown, because had he continued to tackle Young and Young no longer had the ball, he almost certainly would have been flagged for unnecessary roughness. I've seen enough BS calls to know that he wouldn't have had to hit with his helmet, hit him late, or drive him into the ground. Young simply would have had to land on the ground and the guy would have gotten flagged.
You'd like to be in a better position to make the hit then with your head down, but the play was what it was, and he was so conscious of drawing a flag for simply completing a routine football play that he let go of the guy and cost his team the win (at least at that moment, since the game would have been all but over). I feel sorry for him that he's going to take all that flack, when all he was doing was playing by the rules of the New NFL.

So the rules of the new NFL include plays being over without a whistle being blown? If he thought he might get flagged for roughing if he took him to the ground, then he should have just kept him wrapped up until he heard a whistle. Even if he had thrown the ball, they wouldn't flag you for keeping him in the grasp.

At some point you have to let go of him. You either tackle him and risk the penalty if he no longer has the ball, or you leave him upright. You wouldn't hear a whistle if the play was still going, regardless of whether he had the ball or not. And simply holding him up, if he had the ball, wouldn't have ended the play.
I just think he was in no-man's land and screwed either way, given the fact that he couldn't see whether Young had the ball or not. And his hesitance to finish the play as you would expect him to was directly attributable to the crappy way the NFL now makes officials protect QBs. I think they've gone overboard, and the Giants got screwed because of it.

While the refs certainly didn't do the Patriots any favors, if either team had held onto the ball, it wouldn't have been a close game. The most frustrating one was Caldwell's fumble after catching Watson's fumble. You could see it coming a mile away though.

If he holds him to a "3 Mississippi count", then he would have been covering his bases. But he only held him for at most "1 Mississippi", and then turned his back to him when he let him go. If he wouldn't have turned his back, then he would have seen that Young still had the ball, and would have still been able to make a play.

Part of it seems to be coaching (have they gone back to the system they had earlier this year, or is this the third offensive system they've tried this season so far), and the other part is the drops. This game there were 5 BIG drops, last game 7 drops, the game before? 7 drops. And a good deal of them are 3rd down passes or sure fire TD passes or both. That deflates the rest of the team.

ps. All receivers drop passes, like TO, but they will catch more than they drop.
Adding more to this line of thought:
b. How many drops is Terrell Owens going to have before someone, anyone says he's having a lousy season? OK, I'll say it. His 61 catches and eight touchdowns might be nice for fantasy players, but in real life, he's having a C-minus season. Waaaaay too many drops.
f. Vick's words: "I can't explain how I feel. Somewhere along the line, guys have to start catching the ball.''
That's probably true but TO and the Cowboys are 7-4 despite the drops. Vick and the Falcons are 5-6. Somewhere along the line, you can't blame everything on the receivers.
