I just bought a Samsung camcorder on Black Friday.

Thing records fine to an SD card onboard... but you can't really use any of the features of the camera, like light adjustments, etc. by recording straight to an SD card.

So, I also got some DV tapes... recorded some test footage, and tried to "capture" the footage via the provided DV to DVD software... and when I capture the footage from the tape, I noticed that the color was off. WAY off. My son's blue shirt is orange, and his yellow flowers are blue-ish. Using color correction helps fix the footage to some degree, but it ends up grainy and nearly unwatchable. I tried to download another program (Windows Movie Maker which is free), and the same thing happened with this program... colors were off.

My question... is the color screw-up a function of trying to capture the video via a USB cable rather than a Firewire connection? I don't have a Firewire port, nor a cable, so I'd have to buy a bunch more equipment if that's the case. If not, can anyone recommend a program that does not have this problem, or any way for me to find out the source of this problem? Obviously, when I view the tape on the camcorder, it looks fine. I have recorded two different test versions, one in dim light, the other with plenty of light, and the problem recurs. Can't find much info. on this in the 800 video help sections out there, so I thought I'd come directly to the braintrust here to see if anyone has encountered this or has any ideas of where to look for help.

I capture via firewire so I can't talk about quality of capture via a USB port but I've read about people saying the quality of their capture was crap, so this might be it.

As for capturing via USB in a different way, this item could help you without having to buy a bunch of new equipment:

Can't vouch for it though, I just stumbled upon it after googling some terms trying to find some help for you.
