I have recently read a trilogy of books that I thought I would pimp a bit. Okay, okay... I didn't read them, but I listened to the audiobooks (Audible is great for my horrible commute) and I really thought they were outstanding - definitely worthy of a looksee if you like books such as the Potter series. I honestly think these are just as good as the Potter books - maybe even better.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy:

Book 1 - The Amulet of Samarkand (http://www.amazon.com/Amulet-Samarkand-Bartimaeus-Trilogy-Book/dp/078681859X/sr=8-3/qid=1164657899/ref=pd_bbs_3/105-9835180-7914036?ie=UTF8&s=books)
Book 2 - The Golem's Eye (http://www.amazon.com/Golems-Eye-Bartimaeus-Trilogy-Book/dp/0786818603/ref=pd_sim_b_1/105-9835180-7914036)
Book 3 - Ptolemy's Gate (http://www.amazon.com/Ptolemys-Gate-Bartimaeus-Trilogy-Book/dp/0786818611/ref=pd_sim_b_2/105-9835180-7914036)

They are similar in tone and subject to the HP books. You can definitely see the influence that HP had on the author, but they are a bit more adult in theme.

It's the story of a young apprentice magician in a modern world in which magic is available through summoning of Djinni. The story is told from two points of view - the young magician's and the Djinni's. What really makes the books unique are the chapters told in first person by the Djinni - a 2 thousand year old demon who is witty as hell. Some of his metaphors and descriptions are quite funny.

Incidently, the audiobooks are outstanding as well, if you're into that sort of thing. The reader is excellent and does a great job as the voice of the djini.

Anyhow, just wanted to pass that along and see if anyone else has read these books.

I have a large number of books on my "to read" list, but this seems most in line with the type of book I'm in the mood to read lately. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll hopefully get them for Christmas as I'm adding them to my list now.

FYI, there's a new Bartimaeus book out in hardback right now, The Ring of Solomon.

If you liked the original trilogy, you will like this book.

The 'Witch and Wizard' book is the start of a series and looks promising imho ...

(I've only read the first but it was rather good imho - gripped me right from the start)

Edited to remove wikipedia link and put in an amazon one - as wikipedia gives away a fair bit
