We're hoping for a bit of snow in Lexington Thursday night into Friday. At least, my family is. We missed the first snow the Sunday before Thanksgiving because we were in Texas, and my kids have rarely seen snow (and certainly not at their house!).

Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous. I was walking around KC and Lawrence in shorts and sandalls and it got up to at least 70.
Today, it's just now hit Lawrence in the last hour so KC is in the next hour or two. I went to my bank at about 12 and it was lightly raining but came out about half an hour later and buckets of sleet were coming down.
So, if you work in KC, I would definitely recommend leaving in the next hour or so if you can since you know what the city looks like when ice hits.

I definitely won't do anything crazy. Having this truck will prevent me from having to shovel the driveway, hopefully. I'll park on the wife's side of the driveway hoping there's not much snow build up. Then I can just park my truck in the snow on my side.

In Lexington, the forecast is for severe thunderstorms/hail/possible tornadoes Thursday night, then by 10-11am Friday morning, the cold front comes through, drops temps about 25-30 degrees, and turns the rain to snow. And I'm actually looking forward to it (except the possible severe weather). You can tell I'm a snow noob.

Part II of the storm is supposed to blow in overnight with a band just south of KC getting about a foot of snow. Of course, this storm is continuing to track north and that band could move into the metro. Lovely.

You're probably talking about the thunderstorm for the game, but I am thinking of a different angle. The Bengals are my team and I am caught in quite a quandry here in St. Louis if the weather forecast holds up. It isn't supposed to get bad until around noon tomorrow so I will be heading to work in the morning, but my parents live like 2 minutes from my work while I live a long way (especially in severe weather). Unfortunatly, I get the NFL network with directv and they don't with Charter cable. Do I drive in potentially severe weather for a game or not mess with it? Will an ice storm end up screwing with Directv coverage anyways?

Scheduled to roll in through here tomorrow through Friday. Starts off as rain tonight into tomorrow with temps in the low 50s before dropping off tomorrow afternoon. Everything goes into the tank starting tomorrow night into Friday with all sorts of nastiness coming down. Metro Detroit looks like it'll get a glancing blow out of this with 3-5 inches of snow, but just north and west of here, they've posted Winter Storm Watches for a potential 5-8 inch accumulation. Of course, if the forecast is wrong by some distance, we could get dumped on anyway....

That's what I figured. He's more for entertainment value as I think, like most at that station, he plays up the dramatic. Unlike most at that station, tho, I think he really believes it. I remember one time, there were some "suspicious looking clouds" over KC from a storm that had previously spawned a tornado and he wanted so badly to see them forming something again but there was just nothing there. Passionate guy, just lets a little weather fanboyism get in the way of accuracy.
I actually saw his report at 5pm and he actually said 6-12" would be down south and east of KC, possibly reaching Lee's Summit if everything breaks right for the "worst case". But he also said north and west may get very little- just an inch or two.
He has also predicted single digit lows and no one else is getting even close to that, almost everyone in the mid teens.

I suppose that's the nice thing about us doing mostly the per-event stuff in KC. Ultimately, those could always be put off or returned if necessary but not so with the crazy 1 hour calls and the like.
Speaking of which, I keep trying to access webmail and am having no luck. Oh well, I'll just email out the FSRs tomorrow. It's not like those have ever been on a tight schedule as there always seem to be month old ones on the report.

There are currently tornado watches immediately west of San Antonio, and the storms are moving to the northeast. That means they should be reaching me in about 2 to 3 hours. Which is strange, because I figured with an arctic front moving through that the winds would be out of the north.

It's nothing like what you all deal with, but we are in the middle of some very extreme weather here for California.
Gale force (50-60 mph) winds have been tearing up the Inland Empire (Riverside/San Berdoo area) and deserts today, and even here deep in OC, the windows are rattling.
I work out in IE, so I got to feel that first hand. Literally, swirling dust and debris flying through the air. Me seriously wondering if we're going to get hit by a tornado. Trees falling, power going out, the whole gamuk.
It might be a normal thing for you guys in the Midwest or in the hurricane zones, but for us, it is new and weird (and for some, frightening).

Oh crap. They just adjusted the storm track towards the north. KC's going to get hammered, especially on the south side. Up to a foot on the north side of town with the south side of town getting 20-24" of snow. That's a ton of snow. Guess I'll be heading out of town early to avoid the snow and go to the Mizzou/Arkansas game. I remember that. That station just does nothing for me in weather. It's funny because everyone around has opinions on how storm coverage is. Lezak's easily the guy for entertainment value. The Fox guy is probably the most accurate tho I really don't guage that much from KC weather. CBS does have the best radar, I think. And ABC has, um... Brian Buzby. Don't really have any strong opinions either way there.
Personally, if I'm looking for a good and accurate forecast in the area, it's easily Bruce Jones on NBC Topeka. Sure, the man always looks like he's pulling an all-nighter even if it's only tornado night coverage at 7pm and he's working on his 3rd cup of coffee in the last half hour, but he seems to have the most reliable forecasts and is the most professional, to boot. And during tornadoes, he does a good job of not being over the top and covering the whole region pretty much from Manhappiness to past Lawrence as well as ranging north and south.
Special mention goes to "the kid" on Lawrence channel 6, which, if you haven't seen it is a half step above public access. Still, it's a nice little station. They have a guy who looks about my age and a couple of years ago, yes, he uttered these words in kindof the frat-guy apathetic voice: "There's a tornado coming your direction, so you might wanna take cover, ya know." He's gotten much better, but from that, there's nowhere to go but up.

New data
Good morning,
The new NAM has come out and the chance of a major snow storm has been diminished considerably. There is still some hope that a nice band of snow will work its way north into the area and reach Kansas City so let's watch this closely. But, the major snowstorm may be 100 miles further south. Right now I am thinking one inch around KCI and north to 3 inches down south.
Once again. Let's keep watching for, hopefully, another twist and see if this suddenly turns north.
Gary
Don't give up. The radar echoes are increasing. I know I am looking like a fool here, but Brett and Jeremy just told my our Adonis computer model is giving 8 or 9 inche to the south side and 3 inches up north.
The new GFS has 6 to 12 inches here. Let's watch radar. Sorry about this flip flopping today. Let's watch the radar trends. I LIKE WHAT I AM SEEING. A wave is breaking off from the upper low and heading our way.
Gary
Within an hour and 15 minutes, he forecast everything from zero to 12 inches. I'm looking at the radar and trying to figure out what he's smoking, because the leading edge of snow is already in the metro (he said this morning it might not start for another 8 hours) and the head of the comma formation appears to be headed straight towards us. I'm guessing the diving line will end up just south of St. Joe, although the heavy stuff will probably be closer to where the originally thought in the Lee's Summit/Harrisonville direction.

That said, I think the key here is the "ranges of several inches of snow across a county".

SNOW WILL CONTINUE TO SPREAD NORTHEAST INTO EAST CENTRAL KANSAS DURING THE AFTERNOON TODAY. SNOWFALL COULD BE HEAVY AT TIMES DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING HOURS BEFORE TAPERING OFF AFTER MIDNIGHT. SNOW AMOUNTS OF 6 TO 10 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE SOUTH OF A COUNCIL GROVE...TO LAWRENCE LINE. A NARROW BAND OF 8 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE BY FRIDAY MORNING SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 35.

I am checking out the Live Doppler at the KMBC site right now and it looks like we are right in the middle of the east to west U-shape of snow lines (yeah, that is the limit of my weather term knowledge). It is snowing to the north, west and south of us. If I didn't know better.....I would say that snowstorm is trying to flank me!
On the plus side, it looks like SI should be getting snowed on right now! I mean that is good because SI is still awed by snow, not that I wish him any ill snow-related fate.

Ayup, it's started snowing here in the last half hour.
It's really funny, if you go off weather.com's maps, it's apparently been snowing here for 3+ hours. Then again, I guess that's why I tend to use noaa's website as they're much more accurate.

I'm just hoping for enough snow on the roof of Allen Fieldhouse to collapse that roof and complete a demolition that should have been done years ago. :)

I am patiently waiting... nothing is better in the winter months than to see Millenium Park covered in fresh snow from my 18th floor vantage point. The lights bouncing off of the Pritzker Pavilion (Frank Gehry designed) and the screens of the Crown Fountian light up the park. Combined with snow clinging to all of the trees and it's a winter wonderland. Hurry up snow! Hurry up!!
Then I can sulk in this horrible weather for the next 4 months....

We are getting rain in Little Rock. The sleet line is slowly approaching us. But, I think the ground temp is still to warm for any type of accumilation. The storm seems to be moving very, very slowly but it is suppose (and already is) losing its punch due to the atmosphere or something like that.
People in LR are not worried about at all.

All you cheap asses who have a 2WD truck instead of a 4WD truck, I feel sorry for you.. actually I don't.
Ice everywhere tonight and a friend of my wife's calls and says she's stuck at the top of our street, yep 2WD Dodge Ram. My wife's freaking out and I get bundled up and start my 1989 Ford Ranger 4X4. Some guys are helping her out and I pull up. Basically I tell them to back the truck down the road and I would show her an alternate route.
She almost doesn't make it up the 2nd hill right before our house, but eventually she does and the whole time, I'm right behind her at a dead stop. I hit the gas and ol blue goes right up the hill with little trouble. I love that old truck.

For what it's worth, today was one of those perfect Colorado days - cold, clear, dry with sparkling snow cover under a brilliant blue sky. Temps probably didn't get above 20 (yes, I relunctantly wore a coat) but with the usually warm sun and calm winds, it felt great. I think that's the main difference between the mountain west and everywhere east of here - the lack of moisture in the cold air doesn't make it feel like your bones are freezing. This was the kind of day that brings back great memories of skiing.
Stay warm and safe.

Ok, I gotta go with the weathermen on this one. They're looking pretty spot on with the 8-12" in some areas that everyone was reporting last night. We all know 24" was insane but so were people claiming 1-3". Yes, in Lawrence we're under an inch as we've been on the edge of the churning radar all day and the airport probably isn't too bad.
There's no way a storm is going to hit every part of the metro for a foot of snow and there are some pretty good totals out there already. Olathe had 4.3" at 4:30 and Lenexa had 3" and it hasn't stopped or let up at all. Highest I've seen is Wellsville at 7" and hopefully Toddiec is nice and warm as that's heading down his direction.

Actually, here's the latest. Thunder in snow? Never seen that before:
THE POTENT WINTER STORM TRACKING ACROSS CENTRAL OKLAHOMA EARLY THIS
EVENING IS HAVING A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON EAST CENTRAL AND WEST
CENTRAL MISSOURI. SEVERAL NARROW BANDS OF HEAVY SNOW FORMED FROM THE
OLATHE AREA TO DOWNTOWN KANSAS CITY AND BLUE SPRINGS. STORM SPOTTERS
HAVE REPORTED AS MUCH AS 6 INCHES OF SNOW IN OLATHE...5 INCHES IN PAOLA...
N4ARLY 5 INCHES IN LEES SUMMIT...5 INCHES IN DREXEL...4 INCHES IN
MOUND CITY KANSAS.
SNOW....OCCASIONALLY HEAVY AT TIMES...WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE
EVENING HOURS. AREAS SOUTH OF THE MISSOURI RIVER IN THE KANSAS CITY
AREA CAN EXPECT TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 6 TO 10 INCHES WITH THE
HIGHER AMOUNTS THE FURTHER SOUTH YOU GO. A TOTAL OF 10 TO 15 INCHES
OF SNOW IS FORECAST FOR AREAS FROM PAOLA AND MOUND CITY KANSAS TO
HIGGINSVILLE...WARRENSBURG...MARSHALL...MOBERLY AND MACON. SOME

The snow has officially ended for my neck of the woods. Post snow report: 10 inches in the field behind the house and drifts up against the garage of about 16-18 inches. The most difficult part was getting out of the driveway and up the untreated country roads to get to the blacktop. My fellow co-workers are saying the main highways are in good shape. Sooner333 it should get better the more north you go, but if you stay on the main highways/interstates it should be smooth sailing. Should be a sun-filled day with temps in the low 20's and wind chills in the teens at best! Viva Kansas!
Quick edit to add for anyone concerned about SI's quest for snow. Morning news said at least 4-6 inches for Lawrence so look for SI in his yard making snow angels any minute now...

I drove from KC to the Mizzou/Arkansas game last night in Columbia. Drive down was just fine. Drive back was exciting to say the least. Semis and cars off the road everywhere and they ended up closing I-70 just after we passed through. The semis had no business being on that road last night. They've got a freakin' hotel room in the back of their cab! Pull your a$$ over and sleep through it!

Well, I was only about an hour late getting into O'Hare, but definitely escaped there - as most of the other arrivals were further delayed or outright cancelled. In fact, when I checked in for my flight at SFO, the later flight to Chicago was already cancelled. At noon.
It's snowing pretty hard this morning, and both the wife & I are working from home, which is great. Took the dog out for a walk in the worst of it and he was thrilled (seriously, he loves the snow). Got to bark at the snow plow and everything.
Also took our newly-purchased (as of August) 2004 Subaru Forester out to do a couple of quick errands around town. Drove through the snow like it wasn't there. Love this car.
And this afternoon, when it lets up (hopefully) I can get outside and play with the snowblower. Fun! :D

Well, I can safely say that if an actual major storm went through Oklahoma, the city would be on lockdown for days. Yeah, the ice didn't help, but I mean, they shut down the turnpike between Oklahoma City and Tulsa (a pretty major interstate) overnight and now only have one lane open going eastbound and none westbound. The roads aren't much better than when the snow stopped and there are still spinouts.
At least I decided not to head into work 45 minutes away because they said don't travel unless necessary. My car does not handle well in the snow/ice and the office is about 7 miles off of the interstate in a more rural setting.
And it seems I made the right choice because in the middle of typing this my roommate called, said he got stuck here in Norman and needs my help to go push him out.

Not unless laying in slushy grass is conducive to snow angels. And my wife is strongly opposed to driving anywhere to play in the snow (ok, so yeah, that's a cheat) :(
Seriously, if you go 15 miles south of Lawrence to Baldwin, they got 7" of snow. We got a dusting.
Again, the weathermen were actually almost dead on- big snowfall amounts, as much as 15" in SW Missouri, but high gradient so that some places get nothing (KCI had a trace) while others got dumped on (OP ended up with 10").
Nice win by Mizzou last night, btw.

What a disappointment. No snow. A couple of (as in, 2) flurries, or so my wife says. We were at 69 degrees at midnight last night, then got hit with wicked thunderstorms through the night and 40 MPH winds and woke up to temps in the upper 50s. At 10am the temp dropped about 20 degrees in an instant. But by then, the precipitation had left the area.

It got up to about 70 degrees here late this morning, but it looked like a tropical storm blew through here by the afternoon. Heavy rain, wind gusts up to 80 MPH, and trees/branches down pretty much everywhere. More rain is expected tonight, and it'll turn to snow around midnight. They're expecting about a half-inch of accumulation, so it's not that bad. I just don't want to be outside if we get another one of those tropical storm moments.
From what I hear, there was some heavy wind damage in my town, but I am guessing that my house is OK. I guess I'll find out for sure when I get home in a couple of hours, or if my wife gets home and calls me, whichever comes first. It should be fine, though.
