In the EFLs week 4 preseason game RDE Clyde Brewer of the Rams suffered an injury. He is out for an unknown time with...

Tobacco Withdrawal Syndrome

Anybody got a weirder injury then this before?

Yes, that's an old one.

Yep, that one got put in back when EA published the game. They didn't want to have any mention of drug suspensions, so this was the substitute.

It is remarkable how many times I've read this. There isn't a single grain of truth to it. It's an interesting theory, though.

I removed the drug suspensions for EA after a discussion with my producer about the whole approval process. This is kinda how the conversation went.

EA: We're going to submit for NFLPA approval soon.

Me: Is there anything we need to watch for?

EA: They're fairly flexible. The NFL is much tougher about these issues.

Me: What do you think about player suspensions. Will they object to that?

EA: Yeah, probably. Safer to leave those out. Anything that refers to drugs is a fairly hot issue.

Me: Okay. What about other parts of the game, like the draft, or salaries?

EA: Well, they probably have opinions, but they've done this before and they're pretty cool about it.

Me: I'll take out the suspensions, then.

EA: Good. We should have no problems, but it's always better to be safe.

If I were to have some sort of argument with anyone over content (and I never did), it would be about more important things like the engine itself. I would never have tried to put EA into a difficult situation by fighting some imaginary battle over a trivial issue.

The genesis of the tobacco withdrawal syndrome "injury" is Pete Harnisch's DL visit in 1997 - the year I started designing FOF - for that issue. I'm pretty sure it was in the original game.

As rumors go, this is fairly benign (unlike the one with Lauren Graham and a strawberry sundae), but since I've ignored it in the past and it still has legs, I figured people might want to know what really happened.

Jim,

Please stop spreading rumors like this. There are people here "in the know." You should know that even you, as the designer of the game and the man who puts what's in there in there that certain people are given certain information that even you are unaware of. Now, if anybody has any information about where they actually moved the graves to from the plot of land you built your home on, they should speak now before your television turns on in the middle of the night. :D

This is what I remember from that timeframe:

There is some room for interpretation that they didn't want them included based on that. I don't ever remember seeing it in FOF1, so that's where I mistakenly made the assumption.

Yeah, TWS was there at least in FOF2.

i wanna read the conversation recollection from when EA told Jim that FOF was NOT going to be included in the Madden release as we were told.

Rather hear more about this...

So why not bring drug suspensions back since you now answer to no one?

Yea i think they should be back myself. With Merriman being back from this it only seems logical that it should be in place for realism.

Can someone link me to the Lauren Graham rumor? :)

This started me thinking. I hope the player "ejected for throwing a lit cigarette on the field" is still in the game.

I'm pretty sure it is. :)

So why not bring drug suspensions back since you now answer to no one?Don't we have that in form of the attending a tv broadcasted singing contest suspension? I mean, you got to be on drugs to sign up for programs like that.

What's more remarkable, Jim, is your continued insistence on putting the long black Lefty Frizell-esque veil of suspicion over what is clearly the truth.

Jim, you know as well as I do that EA demanded you take that out and we have the transcripts (and I think I accidentaly picked up a copy of your gas bill, will return soon) to prove it.

You, me and the trout know what really happened, and we'll leave it at that.

Nice try, but you need to do your homework first. I live in New Hampshire. They don't call it the Granite State for nothing. Not too many gas lines around here.
