View Full Version : Do you wear cologne?

I've never really gotten the cologne people. Just wash and put on some deodorant.

Anyway here are the rules for wearing cologne according to Esquire's resident expert, Rodney.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rodney's Rules for Wearing Cologne
By Rodney Cutler

Esquire's in-house grooming expert, Rodney Cutler, chimes in with some aromatic advice of his own:

1. Your girlfriend knows how to put on fragrance: Spray it once in the air and walk through the mist.

2. You shouldn't have so much cologne on that people cough when you walk by. In fact, anyone outside a twelve-inch radius of your body shouldn't smell anything.

3. Evenings call for darker, muskier scents like vanilla, amber, and oakmoss. Daytime colognes should be lighter and citrusy.

4. No matter how great you smell, if you have bad breath, there's no way she'll notice your cologne.

5. Don't even think about watering down your cologne to make it last longer. It makes you look cheap, and it can stain your clothes.

6. Your cologne should complement your soap and shampoo. If your nose is not attuned to such distinctions -- and not many are -- play it safe and buy a cologne's entire line of products.

7. No matter how fantastic it makes you smell, applying cologne does not replace regular visits with soap and water.

8. Never put on cologne before exercising. If you start to sweat, there's a good chance it'll run into your eyes.

9. If you pick the right deodorant, you don't even need cologne. My suggestion: Old Spice Red Zone.

10. No matter what your buddy claims, there is never a reason to put cologne on your balls.

I have, but it's a VERY rare thing for me... I use that Axe stuff periodically which to me is basically cologne.. but I probably use cologne/body spray once a month at most.

I picked the first option since I wear it sometimes, usually a few days/nights per week. There are 1 or 2 different colognes that still drive my wife crazy even 7-8 years later.

I wear it all the time, I am in the public, talking all the time, but I don't drown in it, the twelve inch rule is to much for me...

What's the occasion?

Generally it's when me and the fiance are going out for something more than just the store, dinner, etc... So like if we're going out with a group of friends for something or headed out dancing, etc... In reality it's usually just when she specifically asks me to put it on...

Thus why it's often less than once a month ;)...

Cologne is a good idea for people who naturally smell horrid.

Sister works at the (formerly) Calvin Klein in Jersey and she got me a bunch of CK1 for free and I like it. Tiny little spray from about 1.5 feet is all it takes.

Coincidence that this came up today... for the first time in as long as I can recall I was gag-coughed by the 55 gallon drum's worth of shit this guy was sporting in front of me in line at a 7/11. Was the first time I was wishing I could smell the nasty that is this 7/11.

I never wear the stuff. I have no sense of smell, so I can't tell how any of it smells and if I'm wearing too much or too little. Lady H_H doesn't like synthetic fragrances. it's a no go for me.

I've been told by lots of women (my wife, and ex-girlfriends) that my natural scent is very alluring and kind of like a cologne.

Yes, I am totally serious, and no I'm not talking about farts or pit stink.

I would be willing to put up some money to fly Izulde out to meet Schmidty, smell him, and then have him give Schmidty's natural scent a name and write some copy describing it.

Who's with me?

Plane ticket to Cloudy Bellingham, WA: $400
Taxi fare to Schmidty's: $50
Izulde's description of Schmidty's natural scent: Priceless.

Shave DRY? Are you kidding?

I mean, I may use shaving cream like once a month but that's because I typically shave IN the shower. Dry razor on dry face? No way in the hell!

Oh, and sometimes I will use cologne. Usually ends up being random. But I smoke, so I feel like it's pointless.

My wife always liked when I wore Dracar cologne, but I haven't bought a new bottle of that in years.

Now I just use deodorant. Usually Axe (or Lynx when I'm in the UK...same company, but Lynx has some good ones they don't have over here) or Old Spice Red Zone. Both are nice and work great.
