Kilmer plans Genius return
Val Kilmer is reportedly set to sign up to star in a sequel to his 1985 comedy 'Real Genius'.
The 'Tombstone' star recently announced his intentions to take on more comedic roles in the future in a bid to alter his Hollywood image and take his career to a new level.
In the original 80s project Kilmer played Chris Knight, one of two brilliant teenagers who head a team of young geniuses developing a laser for what they believe is a class project and later discover that their professor intends to turn their work over to the government for use as a weapon.
No shooting schedule has been announced.

I am shocked... SHOCKED!... to hear this add-on.
"New Level," indeed.

I'm fascinated to hear the plot. Talk about a movie that is unsequallable.

Classic movie. I'm sure this P.O.S. will be just as good as the last 3 Revenge of the Nerds movies, and slightly better than Leonard Part 6.

what like val kilmer will now be the guy living in the basement of the dorm and a whole new set of wacky students will be introduced? maybe kent runs the department now.

Sadly, Real Genius 2 has more potential than a lot of other crap that makes it to my local cinema. Although I think if Val wants to get back to his roots, may be he should revisit Top Secret!

Maybe the kids in the neighborhood are still eating the popcorn at Dr. Hathaways home? Its like 10 years later, the kids are nearing their twenties, morbidly obese and almost all of the popcorn is gone.

Tired with intellectual pursuits, and the dot.com burst, the genuises get back for one last blast before heading to hang out at Lazlo's bunker with the Swedish bikini team (and Jordan) and watch their hacking success of setting off World War 3 to recreate a world just for nerds! With Prof. Hathaway and his lover, Kent, thwart them, or will there be a popping bigger than their popcorn prank!!! Tune in, Fall 2008!

I'm pleased to say I never saw the original. If I don't see it before RG2 comes out, will I be able to understand the subtle intracacies of the plot?

Real Genius was brilliant and one of those movies that I will drop anything I'm doing, including sex, to watch it.

Why even let the hypothetical become real? Go rent Real Genius. You'll like it.
No comment on the second one.

Personally, I think it could make a pretty decent movie. The story behind their rise and fall is pretty interesting...

Dola-
I know a bunch of folks on this board are waiting with bated breath for the Anna Nicole movie (http://www.postchronicle.com/news/original/article_21264266.shtml), though...

I'm sure they can get the guy that played Mitch (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0418909/) ... he doesn't seem to be too busy.

Seriously, though. They were two pretty-boy shlubs who were approached about being the face of a group, something that was fairly common in Europe at the time. Somehow their act/music caught lightening in a bottle and they were on the top of the music world, winning Grammys, etc. And all the time they were wondering when they were going to be outed as frauds. And of course, it happened in the worst possible way for them...on stage with an audio failure.
And then there's the sex and drugs and eventual suicide in the aftermath. If made properly, it could be a heck of a film.
Oh, the soundtrack would suck, though...

If you can't wait for the Real Genius 2 merchandising, get a head start on everyone. Over at founditemclothing.com, you can purchase this awesome rendition of Val's t-shirts from that movie:

It'll be the shortest production cycle ever. They'll just dub their voices into a copy of the Blues Brothers.

Not quite Hollywood, but hopefully nothing ever comes of that rumoured Seven Samurai remake set to star George Clooney & Zhang Ziyi, who both are decidingly un-Japanese and, in the case of the former, about 200-odd years removed from the setting of the original.
