Nope. I never call plays and most people don't. I love to gameplan but I am not the least bit interested in calling plays. However, for those who love that part of the game I could see it being pretty darn cool. I like FOF for the GM/minimalist coach approach.

I never call plays and I never gameplan. I let my coaches do all of that. I focus more on the GM side of things. The thing that FOF does well is produce realistic stats (for the most part).

on most of my careers at least. Have never called plays and have no desire to in a text sim. Loved it in FBPro but can't see getting into it on a text sim for some reason.

Although the plays were very limited, I loved playing Tom Landry Football.

That's why I have coaches. :)

I call every play and I really enjoy it.

There are a few quirks that get to me, but I like having that control over my team.

The two key quirks are:

1. The opposing defense will seem to learn your plays and by the 4th quarter (if you have dominated the game) they are familiar with virtually any play you run. I think that this is caused mostly by having 70+ plays in a game.

2. At the end of the fourth quarter, if your ahead, you really have to plan to be up two scores or be able to run a last minute drive to retake the lead. This is because EVERY FINAL drive there is no way to stop them!!! You play Prevent defense two deep, and they can hit for 30+ yards at will. Your best hope is getting a turnover on their last drive. It is so bad that if I have the ball at the end of the game and it is 4th and 3-4 I will still run it because I know if they get it back on their 1 yard line they are still going to score.

To assist me with play calling I have a play chart that I print for each game, and I never ever run the same play twice.

Wow! I could never do that but good to see you're into the game that much.

I used to love playing that game. Yes, the plays were limited, and the graphics were primitive, but I think that game had more playcalling strategy options than any other game ever. If they had added career mode to TLSF, I'd probably still be playing it today.

I think it is pretty cool that the game appeals to both playcallers and gm-types.

I'm still learning this game, and I like the coaching aspect. I only call offensive plays though. It's tough for me to run defensive plays since there's no 2D sim right now.

I noticed this too, but even with plays that I didn't run in the whole rest of the game. For example, I called a reverse in the 4th quarter and the "defense was familiar" with that play. I hadn't called that play all game. Hmmm... Maybe they're scouting my practices.

I think it has more to do with the category of plays....a reverse would be a run to the outside.

My main issue with this is in the passing game, I can't go over 40 passes a game without the defense being familiar with the play, no matter what pass out of what formation.

I find that in play calling (I play a very very ball control offense, including going for it almost every 4th down with 3 or less to go), I have to run a very run dominated offense to avoid this. Basically I have to run the ball significantly more than I pass the ball. I end up running the ball 40 times per game. This means that I have to keep 4 or 5 backs on the roster to be safe.

I also don't find that it makes much of a difference if I am in a base offense or a 3 / 4 wide receiver set.

Overall though I can play the offense significantly better than my coach can, and my defense is always bad when play calling, worse than the coach. Strange thing on defense is that if I sim a season 20 times to get where the standard would be for 'simming' then run the season and call my plays, but let my coach call all my defensive plays, I will still always be significantly worse than when simming the season. Strange.

It shouldn't be. A reverse develops a lot differently than a sweep than a trap.
