According to WFOR, a station in Miami, police in Miami-Dade are investigating Atlanta Falcons Quarterback Michael Vick for possibly carrying drug paraphernalia into the airport.
Vick allegedly had a water bottle with a secret compartment that contained marijuana residue. A TSA official had asked Vick to throw away his water bottle. However, Vick balked at the idea. Eventually, he threw the bottle away. The official dug it out of the trash and found the secret compartment. The bottle was turned over to the Miami-Dade Police Department for investigation.

Am I the only one that when I travel, even though I know I haven't done anything wrong, is terrified that airport security will think that I have done something wrong?

I don't know about it impacting his play, but if weed is important enough to him for him to risk taking it on an airplane, then there's no way he's just doing it in the offseason.

For a year, I coached* basketball at a Boys and Girls Club. I am not sure which of the kids smoked the occasional joint, but you could totally tell who the heavy potheads were. And they really were just a bit behind everyone else in terms of hand/eye coordination.
It says that the bottle contained marijuana residue. Which means that he probably wasn't dumb enough to try and take weed on the plane. Just dumb enough to bring his weed carrier on the plane.
But this is the same guy who picked an alias for his Herpes test that sounds like a bad porn name (and gave the story about him having Herpes WAY more legs than it ever would have had).
He does not strike me as one who really thinks these decisions through to a great extent. ("Hey, I signed a $100 million contract. I can buy a new weed bottle when I land. I should not give the guy shit about making me throw this one away.")
*You can't really call what I did coaching. Almost every kid on the team knew more about basketball than I did. I basically took up space on the sideline as a favor to my friend who ran the (terminally short on volunteers) club. Still, my team made it to the finals of the tournament, due almost entirely to the fact that I had one of those kids on my team who hit his growth spurt a bit earlier than his classmates.

I think it was probably one of two things. Either:
1. The TSA agent recognized Vick, Vick was an asshole to the guy, the guy had a hard-on for Vick and was suspicious enough about Vick's behavior to want to bust him;
2. The TSA agent didn't recognize Vick, thought his behavior was suspicious (maybe the bottle contained bomb-making agents, etc.) and was concerned about the public safety

It's not that hard to smuggle pot onto a plane. I've never had to do it but know plenty of folks that have and never have gotten caught. As long as you aren't carrying too much you can tape it to your leg near your balls. Just not on your balls as that would be pretty painful to remove.
The best option of course is to have some waiting at your destination. Not smoking pot is not the best option. That defeats the purpose.
But if it needs to be done, it can be done and I'm sure he's done it plenty. I don't see the need for some crazy water bottle though. I doubt the water bottle can hold much more than that which can be securely fastened to your body without detection.

According to CNN, the airport screener asked Vick for the bottle and Vick refused to give it up, so the screener waited for Vick to throw the bottle away and picked it up.

Vick won't be charged in water bottle incident
Lab tests indicate substance was not illegal
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 01/22/07
Falcons star Michael Vick will not be charged with wrongdoing after tests indicated that a substance in a water bottle he tried to carry through Miami airport security last week was not illegal, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
Vick will be cleared by the Miami-Dade Police Department in an announcement that could come Monday, the person said. Attempts to reach Miami police for comment Sunday evening were unsuccessful.
<!--endtext--><!--endclickprintinclude--><!--startclickprintinclude--><!--begintext--> Falcons spokesman Reggie Roberts said the team would not comment on the situation Sunday. Messages left with Vick's agent, Joel Segal, were not returned Sunday evening.
ESPN reported Sunday night on its Web site that Vick would be "exonerated" in the incident. The network cited anonymous NFL sources.
The "Aquafina" water bottle the quarterback tried to carry through security at Miami International Airport on Wednesday drew suspicion after TSA security officers found a hidden compartment that contained "a small amount of dark particulate and a pungent aroma closely associated with marijuana," according to a police report.
It was not clear Sunday night what the substance turned out to be.
Vick, who has been selected to three Pro Bowls and whose $130 million contract makes him football's highest-paid player, could be spared discipline from the NFL since there would be nothing linking him to anything illegal.
After a meeting Thursday that owner Arthur Blank, new head coach Bobby Petrino and general manager Rich McKay had with Vick, McKay had said internal discipline could be forthcoming.
By NFL rules, if a player is involved in an incident that draws suspicion of drugs, that player could be subject to being placed in the substance abuse program and random drug testing. League spokesman Greg Aiello said Friday that the NFL office was aware of the situation and was looking into it. He declined further comment.
The bottle police said Vick was carrying Wednesday could hold up to 20 ounces of liquid. Federal laws prohibit carrying liquids in containers of more than 3 ounces through security or onto airplanes.
Vick initially did not want to part with the bottle. After a conversation with a TSA agent at a security checkpoint, he eventually threw the bottle into a waste container. He was not arrested and caught his AirTran flight to Atlanta, where he arrived without incident and went on to meet with members of the Falcons' coaching staff.
After Vick passed through the security checkpoint, the security agent retrieved the bottle and showed it to her supervisor, who then turned the bottle over to Miami-Dade police, according to the police report.
On Friday, Miami police said analyzing the bottle was a low priority for a busy, big-city department and that the process could take weeks.
The recent episode cast Vick into a negative light after a string of incidents over the past two seasons that included him making an obscene gesture to fans at the Georgia Dome after a loss to the New Orleans Saints in November. The NFL fined him $10,000 and ordered him to donate another $10,000 to charity.
A popular yet often criticized player, Vick is coming off a season in which he became the first NFL quarterback to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season. He also threw a career-high 20 touchdown passes. However, the Falcons finished 7-9 and failed to make the playoffs for a second straight season. Coach Jim Mora was fired.

Last month I took a domestic flight to meet my girlfriend's dad for the first time. After flying down there and then flying home again, I unpack my bag (which I'd borrowed off my flatmate) and discovered a single satchel of white powder sitting in the front zip section of the bag. My flatmate doesn't know what it was, presumably some form of methamphetamine, and has no idea when he put it in there because the bag had been stored away in his garage and not used for years.
I can just imagine how much of a first impression I would have made with my girl's father if he'd seen me getting dragged off by airport security for trafficking drugs.

I can just imagine how much of a first impression I would have made with my girl's father if he'd seen me getting dragged off by airport security for trafficking drugs. When I was with my family flying to and around Australia (Boston-LA, LA-Sydney, then about 4 smaller flights in-country) in the summer of 2002, I needed to find my Swiss Army knife for some reason. Long story short, eventually I found it in the front pocket of my backpack I'd been carrying on every plane and through at least 5 seperate security checkpoints, including the flight (Boston-LA) used for 9/11 the previous fall. At which I was actually called out for special screening and had guys running over to check me at that security checkpoint because I had a thing of 20 AA batteries that resembled a full clip on the screening, where they emptied the entire back pocket and confiscated nail clippers. Made me feel real good about security procedures. (Of course, the easiest way to beat security is take 2 of those bags used to protect film, arrange them so they show up as one on the X-ray, and have the second one with contraband put under a couple layers of clothing directly below the easily seen top one. Or so I hear.)

About 7-8 years ago in high school we are heading back from Stuttgart going through security when one of the guys turns to me with complete terror in his eyes. Turns out the dumbass left a fat 8 inch knife/machete kind of thing in the lower side pocket of his combat pants that he had bought while over there.
Anyway, he went through the metal detector and a pat down without anybody raising an eyelid. Granted this was pre-9/11 and not a particularly high profile route but still not exactly reassuring.

I could actually believe the story about him having a stash of Skoal in the bottle but that doesn't account for the "pungent aroma closely associated with marijuana" that was up front in the story.
What did he do, get a ride to the airport from a bunch of stoners?
(I'm thinking that's actually a pretty reasonable bet for the actual explanation, but what does that say about his judgemental abilities in & of itself).
