The Nets and Forest City Ratner Companies announced today that London-based Barclays Bank has agreed to a deal for the naming rights of the planned arena in the Atlantic Yards project for Downtown Brooklyn.
The bank will pay hundreds of millions of dollars over the next 20 years. It's the most lucrative deal ever for an arena in the U.S.
Barclays has said it wants to build its U.S. brand.
The arena is scheduled to open in time for the 2009-2010 season.
I guess it should've been obvious when it got quiet, that Stern and Bloomberg would work this deal out, especially with the demise of the Knicks. I don't know that I think it'll work, but..they'll have to name the team the Brooklyn Nets, no way it can be a "New York" anything. Even if they were before.
Here's the article (http://www.nbcsports.com/nba/683506/detail.html) saying the deal was approved just before Christmas.
