Has anyone seen or used one of these before? A while back, I had some problems sleeping. Now I can't really sleep without my computer being on, since it drowns out some of the noise in my house. However, I don't want to have the computer on overnight all the time, and in the summer it'll get way too hot.

I remember someone recommending a white noise machine (or I read it somewhere). But I've never seen one or heard one before. Where would I go to see it in action, and to buy one (how much are they usually)?

Thanks.

How about a box fan? Super cheap and excellent background noise.

It was really just a bunch of tvs and vcrs.

I thought I had this on my freeware/shareware site, but I guess I didn't. This is from the makers of Atmosphere Deluxe (a cool environment/background noise generator that I have been using for over a year). It is called Sound Masker. You can use it to create white noise and save it as an mp3 or wav. That way, you can burn it to a CD or place it in an mp3 player. I never used it or ever tested, so just download the trial to see if it suits your needs: http://relaxingsoftware.com/soundmaskerhome.htm

The forum has a white noise machine, and its name is Bill Parcells.

I have trouble sleeping without a fan making background noise for me.

I can't sleep unless either the air purifier or the humidifier is on. Great source of white noise and it improves air quality! Or at least that is what I keep telling myself.

I tried one of those freeware/shareware programs Any suggested. Didn't burn it onto CD, but I didn't like the noise at all. I guess I need something more like my computer fan. I'd try a big box fan, but I'm afraid it'll just make the room colder than it is. In the summer that'll be nice, but in the winter not so much.

Worth a shot though.

You could just make a CD of whitenoise. Pink noise is also something to think about...softer sounding.

White noise is all frequencies, pink noise is the octaves (or harmonics...i can't remember).

My wife also goes with the fan. She is a nurse, and when we were first married, got the overnight shift pretty often. So, we had extra heavy curtains to keep the light out, and a fan going to drown out the noise, when she was sleeping during the day.

Now...she doesn't work the overnight anymore, but can't go to sleep without the fan on! :( So, eventhough it will be about 15 degrees here tonight in Pittsburgh, the fan will still be on.

I have a fan on every night and have for at least 5 years. The cold really isn't an issue, just point it away from you and you wont' notice a thing. It doesn't even need a big box fan, I use something similar to this - http://www.amazon.com/Vornado-510W-Compact-Air-Circulator/dp/B000050APU/sr=8-2/qid=1170362693/ref=pd_bbs_2/104-6263689-8035161?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden

Yeah, I tried all the noises (white, blue, pink, etc.) and they just didn't sound right to me.

It is just a small fan in a plastic casing with air rushing through the holes to create the fan like white noise. It works if you need a white noise to sleep.:o

I have been around the boards for a year or so just never posted. :) I guess that was a strange first post.

Yeah, one of those where if it was a thread starter, you'd think it was spam.. but it was clearly not based on the content of the thread...

Nothing wrong with the post, it was just funny.

I've used a fan or air cleaner for 15 years or so. I've even brought my own fan to hotels sometimes just in case they didn't have a window / wall unit with a fan.

This might be overkill for what you are looking for, but here is a device from Brookstone that generates all sorts of tones to help sleep and/or relax.
