Kariya should have tried that one on Salo back in '94 in Lillehammer.. Maybe Canada would have won then.. :D

We had a guy do something very similar to that in a ball hockey game. Except for him, there was a goalie in net and he had no idea what to do on a breakaway, so he pretty much tried to cross body block the goalie. Goalie ducked, our guy impacted with the cross bar, the goalie then calmly stopped the ball that was rolling towards him.

We didn't laugh for a good 10 seconds because nobody could really believe what they had just seen. After that though...

This happened after a Minnesota loss where Hirsch stayed on the ice after the game.

It would be funny if Tyler Hirsch wasn't a troubled kid who had tons of talents but who had unbelievable demons. He was "fired" from Minnesota this year even if he could be at the top of the NCAA in points if he was playing.

Tyler Hirsch, a Gopher breakdown

EDIT: For all other Gopher fans like Roby who have trouble with this internet thing, the download is here.

While it may be shocking, I do have a heart when it comes to Gophers. Tyler Hirsch is a heck of a hockey player that seemed to lose it at the end of the game after Friday's 3-0 loss to CC. I am currently scowering the net for the video and when I get it will use my discretion as to wether or not it is suitable to post. To me it sounds kind of like a funny temper tantrum, but the comments of Gopher head coach Lucia make it seem somewhat more serious. We hope not.

After the game, Tyler Hirsch appeared to act out some ritual to exorcise the lack of scoring that plagued his Gopher teammates after Friday's 3-0 loss to the Tigers. It was the first shutout against Minnesota in 82 games, dating back to a 4-0 loss to Maine on Oct 10, 2003.

Standing at center ice after the teams had left for the locker rooms, Hirsch motioned to the maintenance crew to shut the Zamboni doors. He obtained a puck and skated in on the empty net, taking a slapshot from 10 feet and then driving the net into the boards with his body.

He skated to center ice, laid his stick down and went to the locker room.

"It was bizarre — let's leave it at that," said Minnesota coach Don Lucia.

Tyler Hirsch had a breakdown of sorts, his mother was going through some heavy duty cancer issues and some other things he was going through that led to what you saw in the video. He ended up taking a medical redshirt for a year and came back this season. He was suspended for a couple of games this year, once for being late for a team meeting, another for academics. He then went out during the Holiday tournament and appeared to be in another place when he was out on the ice leading to his dismissal from the team.

After the incident in the video, it was compared to I believe a wrestler who leaves his shoes in the center of the ring.

No way around it, Tyler has some issues, hopefully he recovers and is able to lead a normal life. It's sad to see someone with so much talent just not there mentally for whatever reason.

On another note I posted this Okposo goal from this season in the College Hockey thread, if you haven't seen it, here is the link.

If any is curious, Okposo is a first round draft choice of the Islanders. He's also the first african american to play for the Gopher Hockey team.

So is Hirsch out of hockey now?Or is he playing somewhere else?

So is Hirsch out of hockey now?Or is he playing somewhere else?

He was dismissed from the team in late December and I can't find any news to indicate he has started playing somewhere else. I'm not sure if he is enrolled in classes at Minnesota currently, though he didn't seem to go to class that often when he was playing hockey so it wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't.

I think he's too old.

During his year off he spent some time in Germany skating with a team, so, he might end up overseas for a while.

Colin Hemingway scored a similar goal for New Hampshire to the Okposo goal a couple years back.

The ultimate college hockey goal is still Mike Legg's. :)
