I'm not completely versed in the expertise of the board, so I thought I'd throw this one out there.

I have a website (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=53507&p=1277451) that I have developed off and on for a number of years. I am interested in setting up a 501(c)3 to back it. I have seen a number of grants that I believe would be applicable to the work I'm doing, and I believe I have a few users that would donate as well. In addition, there is a group that offers free hosting (you just ship them a server) to non profit organizations. Does anyone have experience with applying for 501(c)3 status and/or grant applications? It's also possible there is a grant out there for individuals that would not require me to have 501(c)3 status.

Getting an EIN is relatively easy (you just go to the IRS site and request one), but getting 501c3 status is a bit more of a challenge unless you have all sorts of documentation and then you have to pay a fee to get a determination from the IRS of your status.

Someone else would be able to give you more details on all of the different areas of that code that might fit for your specific project, but it might not even fall under chapter 3, but it could be one of the others.
