OK, I know the thread is "show us your desktop" and not "describe your desktop", but I'm going to describe. My desktop at work has the team picture of the 1994-95 New Jersey Devils team. It was the first Devils squad to win the Stanley Cup. I would describe my desktop at home, but it has so many icons on it that I can't see it anymore.

Worried? Yes.
Surprised? No.
Every desktop element you see auto-hides. I turn off auto-hide on all the elements for screenshots or else you would just see my wallpaper.
This is BBLean, a branch of Blackbox for Windows. I use it because it is extraordinarily customizable, and extremely slim on resource-usage. For instance, it uses less than 2 Mb of memory in my most comfortable configuration of it, while the default Explorer shell uses over 31 Mb in its most comfortable configuration for me. No contest. Everything responds instantly, so no clicking and waiting. There is a bit of a learning curve with it, but it is the absolute perfect shell for me, and I doubt I will ever use anything else.

I've only recently got on board and I can't tell how how many countless hours I have spent this month (since building a new PC) in customizing some of the downloaded themes. I have even gotten to the point where I have different UI/look-and-feel by application. The XP themes that MS gives you for XP and for Plus really sucks (i.e., boring, unimaginative). I chose the above Cobalt Sapphire theme from xpthemes.com even though I modified it quite a bit. Other cool themes I have include an Ancient Egypt one, Rise of Nations theme (even though I don't play that, I have plans to modify to make a Civ4 themes out of it) and the awad-winning Zippo one.

Thanks, I actually have some of my photos available as background (my wife uses one in a purplish theme her log on has). But as you can tell, I love unclutteredness and simple elegance and would prefer to have a background (my customized version of crystal.bmp) that blends in to the theme without becoming distracting.

Do those desktop tools eat a lot of resources?
If you are asking about bblean, no. It is an entire shell replacement that replaces windows explorer shell (the default taskbar, system tray, desktop icon manager, etc). It uses considerably less resources than the default.
I suspect you are asking about stardock's suite, though. I have never used it because it is commercial, but it looks cool. I would suspect it doesn't use much until you get into the transparency and animation stuff. Also the desktop widgets would probably use up a good bit. Trust the people that have used it extensively more than me, though.

quick question regarding bblean. Say I try it but just can't get a hang of it, messing my desktop badly, is it easy to revert to the good old Windows desktop? Also, how steep is the learning curve?
I ask because every time I see one of your desktop, I'm always wowed by them and I always end up telling myself "I gotta pick that up and try it" but I kind of fear making a whole pile of crap with my desktop...
FM
Alright here is the deal:
If you download, say bblean:
1) Running blackbox.exe -install will set it as the default shell
2) Running blackbox.exe -uninstall will revert back to default explorer shell as the default shell.
So, as long as you know how to run commands like that at any time (you can always do this through the task manager: ctrl-alt-del once, select run from the Menus), then you are always able to revert back to the default.
It won't be too hard to figure out. I suggest learning how to run blackbox.exe from the task manager just to be safest, though.

So bumping an old thread because I would like a little help.
What I'd like to do is move my quicklaunch icon spacing down to the same distance that my systray icon spacing is. Anyone know if that is possible? I can fit 5 systray icons in this width, but I can only fit 4 in the quicklaunch bars because of the ludicrously large spacing. I'd love also to be able to shrink the vertical space that start button takes. Don't know if either is possible, but I would really like it. (this is vista btw)

I'd say getting Outlaws on there is pretty significant.
We need a new Outlaws btw.

What the hell did Strategic Command 2 ever do to you, anyway? It's like you've made it an ungame or something.

My background is slightly more exciting than Bucc's.

brassmonkey: I think I know that. LOL. It's just cool to see all of my Civ4 games like that. I really have nothing else to put in their places.
Calis: Again, you and I have similar tastes. Been playing Outlaws again right now, mainly to show my son what a great it was/is. I did read that a company did attempt to make an Outlaws game using one of the newer engines. I don't think anything came out of it. Too many people like the scifi/fantasy stuff.
Shkspr: I did give it a good try but if I recall, the main thing I thought about while playing it was that I wished I was playing Civ4 instead.

In celebration of my return to Blackbox for Windows this time with Vista (because I can't get my quicklaunch bars to work right) here is my new desktop:
It's like coming home.

These pictures don't show everything, but it's the key stuff. New look all around, including about 80% (give or take 10%) of all icons in Vista were changed.

I would love that wallpaper if it wasn't blown up to fit the screen. That is something I just can't handle very long, I have tried it.

Using Desktop Sidebar (Desktop Sidebar HomePage (www.desktopsidebar.com)) as a replacement for the vista taskbar. Really like this program.

Figured out how to create my own taskbar in Vista without modding anything and this is how I am running it now.

I change my desktop about once a month. Currently on a Christmas theme here at home. My work desktop has a photo I shot in Bermuda. Home computer:

I cropped the buggy handle out of this picture and use it as my work background: 20090905 thru 10 Bermuda 081 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/terpkristin/3907984570/in/set-72157622207548083/)
I try to minimize the number of items on my desktop.
