OK, so I was one of the lucky ones (or maybe there were a lot, I don't know) who filled out the online forms and got selected (probably at random) for a chance to tryout for free for Chivas USA. its out in LA, a cross country trip and about $450 roundtrip plus food and a hotel. My question is, should I do this?
Money is really tight right now, and I have no thoughts about making the team. I'm horribly out of shape right now and while I could probably make it through the hour long trial, I'd feel guilty if me keeping it kept someone else from having a shot. (as you can see I've talked myself out of it).
I guess, do you think this is something I'll be kicking myself over in 5 years when I hit 30 if I don't go out there? I think there's some allure in thinking that if I had tried harder earlier in life, I could have made it there already and that's something I'd prefer not to lose.

Honestly? Yeah, I suspect you will. Not because of some notion that "I coulda made it" but rather because of missing out on the experience of just trying out.
On the other hand, depending upon the financial wisdom of the situation, I can't really guess whether you'll eventually kick yourself more for missing out on this or on blowing the money.

Honestly, if you've already been picked, you're already "keeping someone else from having a shot."
So why not go for it? It'll be an experience, and if somehow you make the team, you'll have an even better story for the grandkids.

Definitely. This is a no-brainer. This is not an opportunity you pass up without a very good reason. (Like, it was the same weekend Harvard Law School scheduled my interview.)

oh, and I also meant to say that I absolutely hate flying, in a Madden/Kornheiser kind of way. I've flown twice in my life, and drove up to Illinois in 1 day last year instead of flying.

Do it. Go try out. Life is all about memories and that will be a great one. You might even make some new friends or meet some players.

Xanax = Flying bliss......I have to take it everytime I fly..
Now that's taken care of go for it. Even with Money tight, unless it would literally take food off your table I would go for it. Make it or not, you had an opportunity that will only ever be a pipe dream to most people and will give you a lasting memory.....Reality will always be there for you when you get back.
Time is like Money, it's not how you save it, it's how you spend it......Enjoy your tryout :)

Don't do it. The coaches at these things don't pay attention at all. You aren't missing out on anything if you don't go.

I will go in your place. I have been working out and getting back and shape for my men's league.

If you were in shape I would say do it. But since you have admitted you are not why would you even bother. This is some 3rdd division Iceland league we are talking about here

I had no idea what you were trying out for - I thought you were going out on a drinking tour promoting scotch whisky. Then from the link I saw it was soccer. Would like the drinking tour better.

I'll second the sentiment that Scotch should be more of a theme in this thread.

It's a great story. Just go and if you have to work overtime or something to make up for it later or cut back on some sort of other spending thing you do for a few months to make up, that's fine. You got picked and who knows what happens.
You can say for a day you're a professional. Surely half of the kids there trying out will...put it in your obit someday and tell your grandkids about the day you tried out for the soccer team.
And they'll go, "What's soccer?"

It's worth it IMO. I used to ref with one of the youth directors over there. Almost got a job at Chivas USA too

It sounds like you'll be on TV too. Maybe after showing up on Univision at the tryouts, you'll end up co-hosting TRL with Daisy Fuentes.

Hey, people don't like soccer, there's a surprise.
And since when is Preki Chivas' coach?
