Tim Goodman is giving this new Comedy Central show a big thumbs up. Sounds like it is worth a look.
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/01/31/DDG7KNR7BN1.DTL

It's not very often that a TV show bursting with imagination, audacity, rude charm and a relentlessly funny worldview gets on the air, much less appears fully formed. But Sarah Silverman -- she of the effervescent fearlessness that always catches people off guard in the likes of "The Aristocrats," her film "Jesus Is Magic" or her bluest of stand-up material -- has delivered an offbeat gem in her eponymous new series on Comedy Central.

"The Sarah Silverman Program" is a brilliantly realized reinvigoration of the sitcom as only Silverman could dream it. She has managed to create a lo-fi world of silly characters (who have depth), odd tics, sweet conceits and ironic detachment that wink-winks its way into your heart. Regardless of what else the series accomplishes -- like making you laugh consistently for a half hour, which is almost a lost art -- there's no overstating what is surely to be lost amid the descriptions of her ruthlessly politically incorrect material. And that is, in the first episode the audience gets her world view immediately. When an artist tries something complicated (but wants to make it look childishly simple or dashed off -- not to be confused with organic), it often takes five or six episodes or even a full season to create that look and make it indelible in viewers minds.

The few series that manage this immediately -- "Pee-wee's Playhouse" and "Strangers With Candy" come to mind -- have an original vision. The same is true of "The Sarah Silverman Program," which gives Comedy Central another piece of the essential-viewing puzzle.

All of that said, whether you love or dismiss Silverman's series depends entirely on whether you like her and her cute-caustic comedy. That Silverman will say and do just about anything whether it offends or not has made her a comic darling but also someone who sends the chaste, arrogantly righteous and humorless reeling.

So here's a good test of whether you're going to immediately add "The Sarah Silverman Program" to your TiVo or instead seek an injunction from the FCC: Silverman is discussing -- with her dog, Doug -- the relative, uh, thickness and plentitude, of her younger sister's pubic hair and says this: "Her vagina looked like Cat Stevens' face."

Later, she enters a dream-like state (after singing a fall-on-the-ground funny song about pooping her pants) where she ends up in heaven, looking at a man in an all-white suit. "Are you God's black friend?" she asks the man. He's not. He's God. Or, as Silverman calls him, Black God. Of course, she sleeps with him. And lies to him. Then kicks him out.

If you're not in now, you'll never be.

What Silverman manages to do with her "program" is take that next creative step in her career, the one that truly talented people always do -- they either carry a movie by being the breakout star or they carry a TV series (harder to do) by unleashing their imagination in a wholly original way. Let's face it, if Silverman made just another snarky sitcom she'd be lost in the pack. She's peopled her TV universe with enough likable characters to give it room to grow. There's her (real) sister Laura ("The Comeback"), who plays her sister the nurse -- and one person who truly looks after Sarah, since Sarah's laziness and selfishness in no way makes her employable or independent. Next door she has two "gigantic, orange and gay" neighbors, Steve and Brian (Steve Agee, Brian Posehn, both with orange-red hair), and Officer Jay (Jay Johnston), who Sarah can't stand but Laura ends up falling for.

All of the characters manage quickly to establish an identity. Laura, despite being the younger sister, is all the sweetness that Sarah lacks, plus she's a rock in Sarah's (very) unstable world. Both Agee and Posehn are nuanced in their roles as video game playing, action hero collecting, egregious TV watching, food-chowing, slacker gay guys. And Johnston ("Mr. Show") is a sketch pro whose understated mannerisms make his authority figure a lot more than expected. (Here's hoping, too, that Tucker Smallwood as Black God gets more appearances.)

Oh, and Doug the dog just flat-out works. For being found in the trash.

But it's Silverman, whose coquettishness is just a gauzy lie that masquerades her rude-girl love of fart jokes and raw sex references, who owns her show. As Black God says to her: "You are the most selfish, racist, manipulative, lazy, pompous human being alive today." And in this show, she is. And for the record, she's also damned cute and funny. Especially when her bad behavior allows her to learn something important (which she reveals a few times each episode with often wince-inducing, crass and riotous results). For example, she learned that God is black. "I think that's amazing. I mean, I'm not one of those people who's going to say, 'Oh, God is black. Is he going to steal the moon?' "

Silverman has created a vehicle for herself that does more than provide a forum for inappropriately hilarious comedy (she could do that onstage). The show allows Silverman herself to be fleshed out, to birth a character who redefines silly (she certainly makes it more dangerous in the process). She's a happy interloper in the world, bringing a pornographic insouciance to everyone's dull day. She's the 21st century "That Girl" -- except she's unemployed, uninhibited and a teensy bit unhinged.

In the first episode, Silverman congratulates Steve and Brian on the passage of an anti-discrimination bill for gays. "So now if someone tries to light you on fire or chop off your penis or something, they go to jail instead of getting a trophy."

She later tries to get out of helping a friend move by saying, "I stubbed my vagina."

With everybody and every issue a potential punch line, Silverman opens up the opportunity by creating all kinds of visual treats -- flashbacks, dream sequences and songs. Ah, the songs. No doubt those will be YouTube gems (provided Comedy Central allows it) since in a mere two episodes she's struck gold with each attempt.

In one sugary ode to being nice, she sings about all the things she would change: "I wish the retarded/were resmarted." Another is about sticking "doody" in your mother's eye.

Well, at least you know what you're getting into.

But then again, you don't. "The Sarah Silverman Program" can't and shouldn't be broken into parts for laughter (or, you know, to appall people), because the fully formed whole is so much sillier and sweeter and creative than you might imagine.

Same here - it seems like too much of an act when I hear her interviewed, and I don't find her comedy to be that unique or funny. Despite that I intended to give the show a chance because I also find her very cute. However, I forgot to set the DVR. Doesn't sound like I missed much from early impressions in this thread.

I enjoyed the episode more and more as it went on. Musical comedy in general gives me douche chills but I tend to like Silvermans songs.

Sure, the main part of her act is being shocking and using the juxtoposition of a pretty girl talking about eating doo doo but I do find the obliviousness of the character kind of funny. The secondary characters, as has been mentioned are all very good as well so that helps.

I don't think it was great or anything but i chuckled more than a few times and will watch it again.

Also, I find her sister kind of hot, in the kind of way that I realize that the chick i'm looking at is not very hot but I still find her hot, kind of way.

I kept wanting Ben to show up and crack wise on the cop.

Not to threadjack, but thanks for the link. I was pleased to see the comments about Top Chef. Like Hell's Kitchen, I had never seen the show before and only got into it mid-season, but really really enjoyed it. Glad to see that the solid ratings virtually guarantee another season.

I hate to ask, but what shows are on USA? I'll admit that I haven't watched hardly anything on that network since Gilbert Godfried was under contract with them. Maybe Silk Stalkings - wasn't that on USA? What's that, 10-12 years ago?

They couldn't have asked for a better contestant to stir shit up than Marcel. If he was on Hell's Kitchen, where the top prize was his own restaurant, I bet he would have been gone much earlier, because it was beyond clear that the dude couldn't lead a group of people even if he was given 2 weeks to brainwash them. A Kenmore kitchen and some cash? Keep him around!

Closer is actually on TNT but otherwise ... Not only is wrestling on USA, but it's the #1 & #3 rated program in all of cable (ranked on total households, taking each hour as a separate program). A Lifetime movie was #3, but Monk was #4 this week, and Psych managed to crack the Top 25. Virtually everything else in the top 25 is on Nick, with a few stray shows 1 per network finishing out the list.

Dead Zone, 4400, and Nashville Star are probably the strongest other things on USA, and although I haven't looked at the numbers specifically, I'm sure they do okay with late night repeats of House the various Law & Orders too.

Most watched original drama in the history of basic cable.
(off-hand I'm not sure how it would stack up vs some of the HBO/Showtime series)

I do not see a single show from the TNT network in the top 15.

And, who knew that Nickelodeon TV dominated the cable ratings?

I'm actually ooged out somehow by how she looks, that alone keeps me from watching it.

If you are talking about Sedwick, I agree wholeheartedly. I think she is by far the most unattractive woman lead on TV today. Doesn't she look in a mirror???

Even when she was younger, she always had that strange look about her. Still, I like the show and I think part of it may be what you just said. She isn't the prototypical hot babe. She's just a solid actress (my opinion) and does her job well.

I have nothing against the hot babes that populate every TV show in this country, but if I think about a lead homicide detective in the real world, I'm not thinking Jennifer Jason Leigh. I'm thinking she probably looks a lot closer to Kyra. I don't watch every episode, but it is one of my favorite shows.

The uncomfortable comedy...wave of the future or comedy fad? I watched tivoed episodes of Sarah Silverman and then two episodes of Extras. That was some painful comedy.

when you whole schtick is "uncomfortable" you have very little shelf life. total short run strategy for her.

it's not really even comedy per say when you promo stuff like "all people with AIDS should be on the moon." it's basically let's just say stuff that is outrageous and try and make people gasp. personally I find very little craft in her work.

hey it seems to work since the ratings were good but it doesn't make me laugh much.

I think she's has great delivery in her act, but she should try to expand her materal a bit more. Having it in the context of a show just might give it a little more life, though, with other characters who aren't always so over the top.

I wonder how many episodes Tim Goodman got in advance before writing his glowing review. I am liking this show a little more each week. The beauty pagent episode had some really funny moments.

I agree. This week's episode was the best one so far. Considering they have only shown 3, that's not saying much, but it was a solid, all-around episode.

The promos say this week will be the last episode of the first season. That went quickly. What was it, 8 episodes? Last week had some really funny stuff. The whole "Tab" thing was hilarious. I still think the show would be better if they cut out the musical numbers. Any word if this is coming back for a second season?

Yep, Comedy Central ordered 14 new episodes for next fall and spring. The show keeps getting better each week. The little kids pagent episode and last week's episode were especially good. The tab thing was very funny and I agree about the songs needing to be cut as I think most people do.

I missed the so-called "tab" episode. I had a feeling this show would get better each week. Does seem like the season is rather short for an American show. British shows do the whole "less than 10 episodes a season", and it seems to work out ok, so maybe we'll see a new paradigm in US TV. I'd trade quantity for quality 7 days a week.

Glad to hear it is coming back with a longer season two. They are showing the first season, all six episodes (not eight as I posted above) starting at 9 tonight. They are showing them twice, actually. Good chance to catch any episodes you missed.
