View Full Version : Locked Out, How Do I Get In?

Lorena

Jeez this kid makes me pull my hair out sometimes. He was playing in his bedroom came out and when I tried to get in I realized he locked the door from the inside, now I can't get in.

So how in the heck do I get in there? I tried slipping a credit card in between the door and the door frame and it didn't work.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Is there not one of those emergency keys up above the molding on top of the door? You might want to check.

Travis

What kind of lock? If it's the push turn type, you can usually stick a small piece of rigid metal into the hole at the center of the doorknob that will depress the lock, allowing you to open the door. That's the type we have on our inside doors.

Depending on the type of lock in the door, a small flathead screwdriver can often pick the lock.

Ksyrup

Yeah, that's the emergency key I'm referring to. It's basically a metal stick that fits the hole and allows you to open the door. Anything slim and sturdy enough should work.

Sorry - I have nothing constructive to add: it's just the first thought that sprung to mind!

The credit card thing doesn't work - I suggest bribing him with something

My indoor doors also have that hole in the middle where you can stick something inside to unlock the door. I think I use one of those thin paint brushes.

what im wondering is where she posted from? its easy to get into a locked house, you can lift a sliding glass door off ( although your a woman so it might be a bit much for you) or you can find a window that already need replacing and smash and crawl. im not going to suggest kicking a door in, the window would be easier and cheaper to fix

Can you tell me what the card number and expiration date are, that will help determine if that card works on picking doors.

I'm assuming from the original post that this is an inside door to the house, and that the kid is no longer in his room. That it's one of those doors where you can push turn the lock on the inside, then just pull the door shut, locking it.

So as such, more of an issue to get the door unlocked so the kid can eventually get back into the room and go to bed so mom can have a drink and continue posting on FOFC ;)

Does anyone read here? :) An internal door is locked and the child is not locked in the room. A vacant room is locked from the inside. (As Travis already stated, I just feel the need to reiterate ::))

It's definitely poorly worded and I was unclear, I just had to assuem this is the case.

But what she literally says is, "He was playing in his bedroom came out and when I tried to get in I realized he locked the door from the inside, now I can't get in."

Not 100% clear imo.

The credit card thing doesn't work

Are you saying this categorically? Because i've used it about 50 times in my life, mostly to break my ex-girlfriend back into her apartment when she locked the keys inside. It depends on the type of lock, but yes the credit card thing absolutely does work.

I have used cards (not necessarily credit cards) to open a locked door and thought I would be able to do the same but it didn't work. The door handle has a hole on the outside and a turn-type of lock on the other.

I figured some of you could give me ideas on how to unlock it so I thank you for the suggestions.

Probably used the wrong punctuation:

'The credit card thing doesn't work? Hmmm... well then, I'd try bribery'

I've used it myself a number of times - ironically it always seems to work on bank branches after closing time ;)

Typically, the hole is for a "key" to unlock the door, where I put key in quotes because it's not any sort of security, just a flat thing to operate the lock. Ideally, you've got one of those kicking around the house; if not, I'd think that you'd be able to get one at a Lowe's or Home Depot type of store.

Unfortunately no. I might get lucky once in a blue moon, but I am not great in those areas. Now if the computer is having problems, I can switch out hardware or debug it if required, but household stuff would be a no. Haven’t had a need though since we have never lived in a house. was flown there as well. We reached the hospital and talked with her and she just seemed sleepy. I asked her how she was and how the baby was doing. Immediately she said that she lost the baby and tears came down her face. Believe it or not, this was actually the first time I had met her.

FWIW, my kid did lock himself inside a room and got a bit too hysterical to open the door once... so now both of my children's rooms have their locks on the outside. But both of those locks were key locks that we lost the keys for, so you probably shouldn't have to resort to that.

Our son is way too fast. If you don't remember to close the door behind you, you are going to be locked out of the room. That is why we put those plastic door guards on the door knobs.

What is ridiculous is that this situation would have been resolved much quicker if our son was actually in the room. He locks those doors on purpose. Then he looks under the door to see if anyone is coming and laughs when someone does. So all we have to do is pretend that we are leaving the house and he quickly unlocks the door. That sneaky 2 year old demon.
