View Full Version : Player body/mass ratio = ideal weight ?

Just wondering here, haven't done any "research"; but I'm getting a feel that when adjusting player weights before training camp that when it says "Player's mass/body ratio is .... compared to others at his position" - that this is saying he is light, good, heavy for the ideal weight for his position.
Or do you think I'm wrong, and the game really adds and averages all the players at that position to find the number to compare to ?

I think it is compared to the ideal weight for his position and not the average across the league. I think this for two reasons, the first is that when I was testing the historic files in the 60's every single player I looked at had a BMR of very low, ie for a guard who was 6 2, the ideal weight would be 300 pounds even though there were no other guards over 290. Secondly, once a player reached ideal weight they never strayed from it eventhough league averages were increasing. Now the league average may not have increased enough to cause a shift in the category but I'm pretty sure it is for the position its self and has nothing to do with what is going on in the league.
If it says "weight is average for his position" and "player's mass/body ratio is high compared to others at his position" does that mean I should trim down the player or does that mean it's ok and no weight training is needed?
His weight is average which means I should not put him on weight training but his mass/body ratio is high which means I should have him trim down.
Which one should I follow - his weight or his body/mass ratio when I'm determining whether the player should trim down, bulk up or stay as is?

I have no definitive answer, but I tend to make guys who are shorter than the average height get a slightly high body mass, on the basis that if they're shorter they'd better be strong to make up for it...
Have no idea if it produces better results in FOF, but it makes sense to me. Much in the same way I have begun to value a guy I can turn into Gilbert Smith at DT :)

Um, where is this mass/body ratio indicator in the game? I only see it talk about height and weight in the position switch box.

In the 'weights' screens on each player card just before training camp.

Thanks. I haven't made it to TC yet in our MP league. I'm glad I read this thread. I am going to "weight" until then for sure to make any position switches. Extra info is always good to have. In another thread I just started, I am struggling with a short RDT I want to switch to LDT so this extra info may be helpful.

No amount of beer later tonight will make me forget the pain I felt when I read this :( :p

I may try to keep the players at their ideal weight and forget the body/mass ratio.

I'm thinking the ratio is more important. I'm assuming it's a weight per inch thing. IE, if you have a 6'9 DE & a 5'11 DE - I would think you wouldn't want them both weighing the same "league average" weight.

That's my thinking as well.
That's my thinking as well.
The Help file (Weight Training Screen) says this: "The screen shows the player's current height and weight, and how his body mass compares to the average player at his position. Players who are at the ideal weight for their positions will perform better.".
So perhaps only the weight is considered in player performance.

I hope not. That would be stupid, and not logical to me.

Thats my take as well. I tend to think it acts as a modifier "post-ratings". So if your DE is 6'6'' 235...he may suffer an "x" penalty for "y" ratings which are used for his DE position. And the rate of this penalty would be "z" for every inch/weight ratio under/over the ideal ratio.
It would be interesting if there were actually certain ratings 'affected' by being over vs. under weight, and not just 'penalized'. For instance, in my example above, maybe that DE gets a slight increase modifier in pass rush technique, but a major hit for run defense & PR strength...so much so that it more than negates his pass rush tech increase, but could be helpful in certain situations. I have no data to say that happens...but I find it neat to think that it could be happening.

I know what the help file says, but other feedback in the game and from Jim certainly suggests that there's more to it than that.

i have a stud fullback, that i usually play a halfback so he gets most of the carries. i have avoided doing a position switch, bacause fullbacks tend to lose too much in ratings when converted...
would it benefit me to have him lose weight, theoretically making him faster, even though his listed position is fullback? or would that just screw up his fullback rating.....?
he is currently 243 lbs, and rushed for 946 yds last year on 262 carries for a 3.61 average. i would like to raise his ypc....

If i was you I would slim him down a little bit. He should still be big enough to be effective inside, but perhaps a little better at getting to the outside if he could shed a few pounds.
