My wife and I as well as some of our friends are planning on renting a beach house somewhere this summer. We have been looking mostly at Outer Banks, but before we made a final decision I was curious if anyone here had any other suggestions of good places to rent a beach house.

This trip is going to be more about just chilling out than anything so it doesn't need to be a real heavy touristy area. Some isolation is kind of what we are looking for. Obviously it would be nice if there were some things to do in the area. It looks like we will be making the trip the last week in August. Any suggestions or positive experiences from the FOFC masses?

Edit: I forgot to say we most likely want to drive there from Missouri as well. I guess it isn't a requirement, but it would be better. So that likely rules out any west coast destinations.

My folks have a condo on Johns Island in South Carolina. It's about 20-30 minutes outside of Charleston. It's a great spot.

Charleston is a very cool city to visit that offers plenty to do. There are a couple of (surprisingly) excellent restuarants closer to the island. The beaches are great. It's not too isolated as there are quite a few condos and beach houses on the island, but the beaches never feel crowded. The island itself is very quiet, as it's private.

I've been there three times and have loved it.

My folks' condo can fit about 4 people (2 couples), so if you're interested and have a group about that size, let me know. I'll see what I can do.

p.s. Go Wings.

My wife had been looking at a beach house in Jersey, but found one in Carolla, North Carolina for the 3rd week in August that was half the cost of a similar house in NJ. I've never been to the Outer Banks before, but supposedly Carolla isn't as built up and touristy as other locations in the OBX.
