View Full Version : Um... Wow. I think this Game Plan is broken

In the WAFL MP game between Smokey Mountain and Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay was up 35-10 in the third quarter, and they start throwing just about every single play. They dominate play, but fall just short, losing 35-30.
Holy Shit Stat Line #1: The QB
Marc Dumas (37-62, 667 Yards, 4 TD, 4 INT)
Holy FUCKING Shit Stat Line #2: The WR
Kevin Savenstein Targeted 29 times, managed a mere 19 catches... for FOUR HUNDRED AND FOUR YARDS.
Now admittedly, this is skewed due to two long TD plays
3Q: 03:02 SM - Kevin Santistevan 81 pass from Marc Dumas (Seth Kerry run for conversion failed)
4Q: 02:32 SM - Kevin Santistevan 55 pass from Marc Dumas (Roosevelt Hardeman extra point)
But still.. that's Maximum Football type #'s!

just fyi --- to save other people the time when comparing actual NFL records---
Att = 70 Dredsoe
Comp = 45 Dredsoe
Yards passing = 554 Norm Van Brocklin
Yards rcvg = 336 Willie Anderson
Passes caught = 20 TO

This is a MP game, so isn't it possible that this occurred because the owner did his own tweaking of the game plan? I've never seen anything close to that playing SP as an owner who lets the AI game plan for his team. I assume you can craft all sorts of wacky offensive schemes if you want to put enough time into it. And, if you override the AI's attempt to run out the clock with a large lead with a pass-happy offense in any situation, what makes this result so surprising?

I was under the impression that the trailing team was the one that went pass happy. Was this not the case?

Reading through I think that's what he meant, although it is a bit ambiguous.

I took this to mean TB should have been running the clock out instead of continuing to throw, and TB's offense ended up with ridiculous numbers. If it's the trailing team, then that's even more of a reason not to doubt the realism of it. The trailing team should be throwing every down to get back into it.

That's selective quoting for you. Yes, that's how what you've quoted reads but add the last bit of the first paragraph and it's clear that it's referring to Smokey Mountain.
I think.
The SM on the game log gives it away.

It's not selective quoting...it's about all I carefully read to get a gist of what (I thought) he was referring to. :)
Like I said, if that's the case, it's even less perplexing to me. Sure. the numbers were huge, but that can happen. Suggesting those numbers are MF-like goes a bit beyond the pale. Perhaps if the QB had completed 4 of 26 passes for 845 yards and 12 TDs, with 3 sacks for -245.9471 yards, then I could understand the reference. As it stands, sounds like an injury-depleted or otherwise deficient secondary couldn't keep up with a receiver who had a big matchup advantage that the AI took advantage of on the offensive side of the ball.

And let's not gloss over the fact that he did throw 4 INTs. I think those came earlier in the game. Additionally, if the other team is playing 4 deep at the time, you can rack up some huge numbers.

Tampa Bay is my team! Does this mean I won? Haven't been able to check yet :)
EDIT:
Looking at the play by play, I was in a dime package on all the plays. It looks like I had a ILB who allowed 10 catches, that seems odd. I might have to look into that.
BTW, I let the AI gameplan the defense.

You are correct, My team (Tampa Bay) was in run-the-clock-out mode in the second half.

No, that's a hugestretch to be honest. If the QB had thrown 550 yards and the receiver had 250, then I agree that it is realistic (because that kind of thing could happen in real life). But these numbers are just too far off the charts and have probably highlighted a glitch in a certain gameplan.

They = Smokey Mountain
While the end results seem a little unreal, the actual game log seems very possible. Tampa Bay got an early lead and started trying to run out the clock, but their last five drives were mostly three plays and punt. While Smokey Mountain went into come from behind passing mode, and dominated the game in terms of yardage and number of plays.

Ahhh. That clears things up considerably. If you don't make adjustments, default gameplans will lead to MANY long passes for a team that is significantly behind. Looks like Smokey Mountain was just able to connect on quite a few of them.

Actually they only made 6 out of 19 long passes, but their medium passes (9-18 yards) connected 16 out of 23 for 319 yards is what I think drove up the yardage.

This is why I think they sat back in a 4 deep zone and Smokey Mtn took what they were given and got back in the game.

Yea, this is definitely the first time this has happened to me, as I have blown out a few other opponents this season, and have had nothing close to this happening, although my MLB is gonna get yanked from the dime package :mad:

You also had a CB that allowed 8 catches. I've seen LB's give up tons of catches, but a DB giving up that many is something I haven't seen in SP yet.
