No idea why this occured to me, but it seems like something that could be pretty fun considering how much baseball history is easily available.

Let's see the clearest way to ask this question . . .

There exist three current or former Major League Baseball players, A, B, and C.

A first played in a Major League game on date X.

A played in at least one Major League game (either as an opponent or teammate) with B.

B played in at least one Major League game (either as an opponent or teammate) with C.

C last played in a Major League game on date Y.

The question:

Who can you pick for A, B, and C such that the length of time between X and Y is as long as possible.

Roy McMillan first played in 1951

teammate of Nolan Ryan in 1966

Nolan Ryan was a teammate of Craig Biggio in 1988

Biggio played last in 2006, and will play again in 2007

55, 56 years?

After quick initial thought/research I can get from September 17, 1941 to October 1, 2006

Stan Musial > Pete Rose or Carl Yastremski > Julio Franco

I was going to say, anything without Julio Franco isn't a good idea.

Johhny Cooney first played in 1921.

Played for the Boston Braves against Stan Musial who began in 1941 with St. Louis.

Stan Musial played on the Cardinals with Tim MacCarver who begane in 1959 and played until 1980.

I'm pretty sure more of the combinations will center around one or two players...

A - Joe DiMaggio :: Started his career on the '36 Yankees (debut = 5/3/36)
B - Minnie Minoso :: Played against DiMaggio in '51 (White Sox v Yankees, multiple dates)
C - Harold Baines : Played with Minoso on the '80 White Sox (10/4/1980). Retired in 2001 (last game = 9/27/2001)

A) Warrehn Spahn debuted as a rookie in 1942 with the Boston Braves.
B) Spahn pitched against Pete Rose in 1963 (21 years)
C) Rose was a teammate of Julio Franco in 1982 when Franco Debuted as a rookie. (21 years)
1983-2006 (24 years)

66? Someone check my math.

2006-1942 = 64 last I checked ;)

Right. 1942 and 2006 count as one each. So 64+1+1=66.

I can't verify whether or not that Jimmie Dykes was on the White Sox Roster in 1939 when they played the Senators, but I'm going to post it anyway.

Jimmie Dykes debuted in 1918.
Jimmie Dykes played against Early Winn (CWS vs. WAS) in late 1939.
Early Wynn played with Tommy John on the Indians in 1963.
Tommy John retired in 1989.

That would be 71 years.

dola: I mean that I know Dykes played late in the season with the White Sox in 1939, but don't know if he was on the team when they played the Senators...he played in two games that season.

Rose and Wynn wouldn't have played eachother b/c they were in different leagues.

So 2006-2007 would be 3?

I think the math being used is off. The initial question is the length between X (the time player A first played) and Y (the last time player C played). It is not asking the number of seasons played. If player A started on April 5th, 2006 and player C ended on August 7th, 2007 the time is 1 year, 4 months and 2 days, not 2 seasons. :)
