Under Marty the Chargers were 14-2.


Norv need to win more than 14 games next year to be a success. Something tells me he will not be able to even hold Marty's Jock in 2007.

Doesn't matter. If the Chargers win the Super Bowl under Norv Turner, hell will freeze over shortly before the presentation of the MVP Award and devour the Earth, preventing me from sharing any change in my opinion of Norv with the world.

Chargers are a strong team next year. Doesn't matter who the coach is. Now if you said LT broke his leg, then I'd be worried.

This quote always kills me. I guess people forgot about the Rams. Sure they brought in the brilliant offensive coordinator to take over the team, but with all the talent, he couldn't repeat a Super Bowl win.

While the Chargers never even sniffed the Super Bowl in over a decade, Norv Turner has never had a good regular season record so he is definitely a downgrade from the previous coach. Hell, I would have taken Denny Green over him because at least he has more playoff wins.

So it would change my opinion of him if he does win the Super Bowl. I think it is the least likely thing to happen, but I am trying to remain as optimistic as I possibly can.

Sooo, if the Chargers go 9-7 ... get in the playoffs - sweep through and are champs ... you would categorize that as having a lesser successful season ?

I think he would not become the second African-American head coach to win a Super Bowl.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.

And that is exactly what screwed the Rams over because Martz needs someone to rein him in a bit. His infatuation with the pass cost the Rams wins in 00 and 01. It definitely cost them the title against the Pats when the Pats were obviously in a pass first defensive mode.

Why exactly is Turner known as an offensive guru? Because he had Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman? How has he done without those players?

It took him all of one season to change Alex Smith from "maybe he'll be okay, but he'll probably be a huge bust" to "he might be great, but as of today is capable of being a starter in the NFL."

We'll miss him a lot this year.

In all honesty, I think that Smith's turnaround was more because he is a smart player and (supposed) hard worker than Turner's guidance. Didn't Turner also draft and "develop" Heath Shuler for about three years in Washington? What happened to him there?

Even if it was Dan Marino in Alex Smith's place, no QB in his rookie season would have had success with the 2005 49er's offense.

I'm pretty sure life will go on for the 49ers without Norv Turner. Probably for the good.

Professional San Diego sports teams are here on this planet only for two reasons and one of those reasons is not to win championships.

They are:

1. Where waaay past their prime players come to play another season or two before they retire.
2. To cultivate up and coming talent to be traded or not resigned to see huge successes on other teams.

If the Chargers were to win the Super Bowl, then I'd be willing to bet that there has been some sort of tear in the time/space continuum and there would be Sleestak and dinosaurs roaming the Earth, but, that's not a choice.

So my vote is for the trout.
