View Full Version : OT: The FOFC Music Draft
Maple Leafs
02-21-2007, 02:33 PM
Hell yeah!
Welcome to the FOFC Music Draft.
How to play:
If you want to play, PM me. If there's a lot of interest, I'll randomly select ten players. By "randomly" I mean that after a day or so, I'll "randomly" pick whichever ten people I want.
The draft will be conducted via the forum, in this thread. When it's your turn to draft, you post, ideally with a brief note about the reason for your choice. If you won't be around, you PM someone else your picks in advance to keep things moving. You will agree to this, and then not do it. This will slow up the draft and annoy everyone. You won't care, you selfish prick.
The draft is a serpentine draft -- that the order reverses each round. Draft order will be determined before we start.
You will be drafting songs from popular music. This includes rock, pop, country, rap, etc. It does not include classical music, national anthems, ring tones, or anything else. Don't get tricky.
How to win:
The fun here comes more from the draft itself than from actually winning, but just in case it matters: Once the draft is done, we'll hold a vote and let FOFC choose the winner. FOFC will pick someone shitty. They always do.
The rosters
You will draft a "team" of ten songs. The idea is to assemble the best possible roster, using your awesome knowledge of music as well as your crafty drafting skills. Trades are allowed, as long as they don't slow down the action (the idea is to keep things moving as quickly as possible).
Your team will consist of ten songs, at the following positions:
- The Classic. This song has stood the test of time.
- The Epic. This is a sprawling masterpiece that makes you reach for your lighter.
- The Arena Rocker. The kind of song that kicks the most ass when performed in front of 20,000 or so drunk people.
- The Trendsetter. A song that helped shaped the music to come after it. Tread carefully -- go too obscure and the voters will punish you.
- The Love Song. Self-explanatory.
- The One-Hit Wonder. Admit it, most of them are good. Oh yes they are!
- The Party Song. A song that celebrates sex, drugs, booze, or some combination.
- The Crossover Hit. This is a song that mixes and matches musical genres.
- The Cover. A song that covers something that came before (not the original)
- The Anti-Establishment Song. The best music is the kind that gives the big F.U. to authority.
Obviously many songs will fit into multiple categories. Finding the right spot for each pick is part of the strategy. Once you've drafted a song, you can't re-assign it later.
Additional rules thrown in to make it needlessly complicated
- No artist can be used more than once. Once somebody has chosen a song from a singer/band, all their work is off the board.
We will be pretty general here. A singer and his/her band are the same artist (Bruce Springsteen is the same as Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band). A band is the same band even if some members change (Genesis with Peter Gabriel is the same as Genesis with Phil Collins). An artist can appear multiple times only if they were in separate and distinct bands (The Beatles and Wings are separate artists).
The only exception will be songs that are done by a collection of different artists. "We are the world" does not wipe half the artists from the 80s off the board.
When in doubt, check with the commish (that's me, genius) before you pick.
- No song can be chosen more than once, even if it was done by multiple artists. (This applies to songs in the Cover category too.)
- At least two of your songs must be sung by a female
A few notes:
The draft is open to everyone -- observers are welcome. Discussion of picks is encouraged.
In general, it's considered very poor form to suggest picks during the draft -- the equivalent of being the guy who doesn't play poker but sits at the rail and shouts out to get attention. However, it will happen. If you're the sort of person who thinks you'd be really, really bothered by this, do yourself a favor and don't play.
A final note:
If the idea of doing a just-for-fun draft strikes as you as stupid and/or pathetic, but you're the type of person who likes to post about text sims on an internet forum... well, you may want to give this a miss until your sense of irony develops a little more.
If you want to play, PM me now. If I have enough entries by tomorrow, the draft will start then. In your PM, you must include your top three picks so that if you forget to check back we don't all have to wait for you (although your picks won't be used unless there's a delay).

Keep in mind, the winner is voted on by the general public. Too much music knowledge may actually hurt here.

Is this a song that mixes genres, or a song that crosses genre lines on the music charts?

I think either would apply, although I was mainly thinking of a genre-mixer.
I didn't really put any thought into this.

I don't think mailing in 3 picks is a good idea since one of the values of a FOFC draft is to see how others are picking and play off of them. But I understand drafts getting hung up too.

How to make your picks:
Please cut and paste the following each time you make a pick:
Classic -
Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -
Then fill in your pick in this format:
Anti-Establishment - 1.1 It's Not Easy Being Green, Kermit the Frog
Make sure to include the artist. Keep cutting and pasting your own chart so it fills up as you go through the draft.
Of course you're encouraged to also include a few words about your pick and why you made it.
If you won't be around to make a choice, please PM me a pick or two in advance. I generally won't use your pick for you until a few hours has gone by, unless you let me know you definitely won't be around. If you don't want to PM me because you think I'll steal your picks (and I probably will) find someone else to help you. One of the people who expressed interest in this thread but didn't get to play would be a good candidate.
This isn't a speed challenge, but please don't be the one who causes delays. I reserve the right to replace anyone who takes to long with one of the other people who wanted to play.
You're responsible for making sure your picks are valid (i.e. artist or song hasn't already been picked). If you make an invalid pick and then leave the forum, we reserve the right to invoke the Minnesota Vikings rule and keep going without you (in which case you'll get to repick whenever you get back).
Trading of songs and/or future picks is allowed. If you make a trade, have both people post it in this thread. Please do not hold up the draft to negotiate a deal.
The draft has begun... Subby is on the clock with pick #1.1.

Some of the categories, particularly one-hit wonder, have a lot of potential for comedic poinits - but that could lose as many, if not more, voters than it gains.

We'll come out of the gate with a sure thing, Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. I just played it backwards to make sure it was still urging me to worship SATAN and since it still is, I HAVE TO HAVE IT.
This probably could have been EPIC in addition to CLASSIC but there are just so many other great EPICS, that I want to save that slot for later (much like the CHANCE slot in Yahtzee).

My thought process was also along the lines of defining songs...while there are plenty of bands who have a ton of great songs still on the board, I can see the vote being split over folks who feel the choice of Great Band's Song X over Song Y is terrible. Taking Dylan off the board with LARS -- aside from it is being of the greatest songs ever written and a trendsetter -- avoids that argument somewhat.
No risks = no rewards. Though I'm truly baffled that this pick is seen as risky. I'd have not been surprised to see the song go #1 overall, and would have taken it there myself.

Considering they really only put out two "real" albums, it's amazing that you could make an argument for G'n'R having a top pick in four categories: Love song (Sweet Child O' Mine), cover (Knockin' on Heaven's Door) and epic (November Rain). But I'm going with Jungle, a song that kicks so much ass that it's still played at every freaking sporting event in the world 20 years later.
I might have been able to get away with this in the Classics category, but if you've ever seen Jungle performed live you know it belongs here.
Oddly enough, I think there are other songs that are a better pick here than Jungle, but I suspect they have a better chance of still being on the board next round. We'll see if I'm right.

Bucc sent three picks. One was his Public Enemy pick, and the other two are already gone. He also PM'ed me to say he wouldn't be online during the day due to work.
As I see it we have two options here:
- Press pause, wait for Bucc to make his next pick, and resume the draft tonight/tomorrow

By the way, For my Beach boys pick...This song was one that redefined the Beach Boys. It also used instruments that were at best rare if not foriegn to rock and roll... Like the cello and the therimin. This is one of ther first songs I know of that used a layered production..giving us a type of musical collage. Later seen in Strawberry fields (for example)

Hm. My gut is to attempt to contact him through a private email address for him first. (if anyone has one) Unless he has discussed his picks with someone already (Wade could be used in an emergency for me), I'd hate to see someone pick for him and go in the completely wrong direction. Having said that, I'm eagerly waiting for this to move on. Daytime is also the best time for me to play. :) Looks like three picks is not nearly deep enough for a pre-draft list. :) My vote is an attempt to contact him outside of the board ( I don't recall what Bucc does for a living or if he would be checking email) and go from there. I'd hate to screw him, and I'd hate to see this slow down.

I like the co-owner idea, and I don't have a problem with him redrafting if the choice doesn't suit him, but only after every other owner has drafted in between the co-ownered pick and whatever his next pick would be. My pick last round factored in picking again 4 slots later; I could have easily taken "Rapper's Delight" at 1.8. My original pre-draft email to ML said that I wanted trendsetter first no matter what (I had "Smells Like Teen Spirit" originally.) This was still a tough pick for me. I had some thoughts in other categories since 1.8 and some other thoughts here. I will expand when it will no longer help anyone else.
On to "Rapper's Delight". It is the definitive rap song. There is no argument as to what started the genre, hell, it named the genre. I couldn't go with a better trendsetter. I don't know that this is quite the Tony Gonzalez pick that "Walk This Way" was, but I think it's like picking between LT, LJ and Alexander.

Well, fwiw, the song is considered to be the first ever hit rap song and basically the origin of the entire genre.
In my mind it is more clear a "trendsetter" than the previously mentioned "Smell's Like Teen Spirit" because you could argue that there were a lot of similar bands and songs that cropped up atht esame time as Teen Spirit, and that it just happened to be the most popular.

And if that's who you mean, then, no, I haven't. :) I can throw a lot of things out there that people won't know that I would love to draft. They'll be Free Agent picks, though. I've heard other people say this, coming from similar perspectives (they love all types of music, can appreciate all kinds, etc.), but am totally confused how that could be possible. I could understand not appreciating the lyrics, especially more recently with the heavy emphasis on violence and women...but the beats, the rhythms, sometimes I'm just amazed at what I'm hearing (underneath the lyrics).

Not the same. The organization is a band that was formerly known as death angel.
I am in no means being critical of the pic or of the artist and their effect on that genre. I would have never listened to a rap song at the point I was at in the early 90's.

And I didn't think you were. I'm rather certain I have never heard "Rapper's Delight" all the way through, I'm just quite aware of it. "Walk This Way" was originally an Aerosmith song (could've been used in Covers I think) and was and has been heavily rotated ever since.

This is the song that introduced Elvis to America, which in turn makes it the song that introduced Rock and Roll to much of meainstream (i.e. white) America. Yes, black artists had been doing rock and roll for years and Rock Around the Clock had already come and gone, and you could even argue that "That's All Right" was the real Elvis crossover song. But Heartbreak Hotel was the big hit that largely launched the Rock and Roll era, not to mention Elvis's career.

I had Elvis in my trendsetter list as well. However, I didn't pick him because of the reasons you list above. There are a lot of people that will discredit this pick because he was not the first true rock 'n roll artist, covered a lot of his songs, etc, etc. Good pick, though. Yeah, it's a tricky pick. "Elvis copied rock and roll from black artists" is like "Video Killed the Radio Star was the first song played on MTV" -- it's one of those things that everybody already knows, but some people still insist on treaking like it's a groundbreaking piece of news.
Still, putting all that aside, anyone who claims Elvis Presley wasn't one of the two or three most influential figures in rock and roll history is just trying to be argumentative.

Bingo.
Not to mention, the category isn't "most influential", it's "trendsetting". There's a difference. Can something (relativelty) obscure really be considered a trendsetter? Or is the song that rips it off and becomes a hit the trendsetter?
Edit: For example, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" wasn't especially original. That sound had been around for years, and many great bands had come and gone in relative obscurity playing songs that sounded an awful lot like what Nirvana ended up releasing. They didn't invent anything or even perfect it, but they were the ones who brought it to a larger audience. Original? No. Trendsetting? Without question.

A tough choice here, as there are songs I'd prefer to have earlier, but that "two songs sung by women" rule is going to bite some folks in the tail. I'm going to avoid the coming crunch by taking one one of the most popularly beloved and critically important songs by a woman artist. The song has it all -- social consciousness, the civil rights era backdrop, an African-American woman demanding her due...and it rocks, too. Every female vocalist in the modern era walks the trail this song blazed. I also get bonus points for having seen her perform it. With that:
