MLS is essentially kicking off now, and since the 06-07 soccer thread seems to mainly be related to European soccer...

Spoiler for the Champions Cup.

The links to stories only and none of my other random MLS stuff is here (http://cleatsheet.blogspot.com/search/label/daily%20news)

Basically, its a parsed version of any RSS reader.

English papers have linked the Revolution with a move for Robbie Fowler. (it's from the Daily Mirror so take with a truckload of salt)

BBC website has that story now, so maybe the Mirror finally got something right. With Voronin heading to Liverpool, Fowler will be down to about 5th or 6th pick forward so a good time for him to move on.

I attended a few Red Bulls games last year (2 or 3 including their lone home playoff game, i can't recall), and I'm attending at least 4 this time around, probably far more. Some friends and I picked up a 4-pack of tickets including the Beckham game and some of the other teams I'd like to see most (Houston, DC, and I forget who the 4th game is).

It's pretty likely I'll actually spring for season tickets in 2008 when the new stadium opens in Harrison, NJ. It will a breeze for me to get to relative to Giants Stadium, and I expect the atmosphere to be infinitely better. Finally a stadium that is easily reached by mass transit from both New Jersey and New York City!

This is a pretty solid MLS blog by writer Ives Galarcep, who is a writer for ESPN Soccernet and the NJ Herald. He covers a lot of league-wide stuff you never see actually make it to full "story" status, so it's pretty interesting, and he seems to add something daily. I think it's worth a look even for non-Red Bulls fans (though the blog is defintiely slanted towards local news).

http://njmg.typepad.com/sbi/

And I'm really eager to see what kind of job ESPN does with their Thursday night coverage, and almost more importantly highlights on sportscenter.

I would be disappointed if the Revs DP slot goes to Robbie Fowler. I am not sure if he is type of name player they need to sign. First, they have enough firepower up front. If you do sign a striker with your DP, they are going to be better options come open than Fowler.

If you are a DC fan, Steven Goff's blog is pretty good. http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/ It is just not restricted to DC United either. He covers the whole American soccer scene.

I also read MLS Underground on occasion - http://mlsunderground.blogspot.com

There are a couple of others I have in RSSOwl, but they I can not recall them right now.

I thought the Dynamo played well. Texas A&M was a nice, cozy venue that looked much better than RFK. It was a really good choice to put it there. The Dynamo did not look like the team that won the MLS Cup last year. It going to be tough for the two MLS squads to advance.

Columbus and Houston got some face time on FSC this weekend, as the run-up to the season opening on April 7th continues.

I reiterate here my desire to follow the league more closely this season, and even try to get out to a Crew game with my boys sometime this season.

The Crew did not look bad at all during the first 60 minutes of this game (I got sleepy and plan to watch the final 30 minutes this evening). I can only hope that they will improve this year. They can't get much worse, and it is hampering my desire to watch any MLS. I have enough crap sports teams around here... the Blue Jackets, the Reds, the Bengals (still haven't proven themselves), the Cavaliers. We need a winner besides Ohio State to get behind, dammit!

General statement about the games: If you only had time to watch one i thought the DC United - Chivas Guadalajara match was the far better of the two.

Good result for Houston, thought i thought it was a boring match (well, the half i saw). Gonna take a meltdown for them to blow it in the 2nd leg.

Really, really enjoyed the DC-Chivas game, as I thought the teams were both going at it pretty damn hard. I thought Chivas were the better side and I think they'll be very hard to beat at home in the 2nd leg. If I were a betting man I'd project a Chivas-Houston final.

Well, I guess we're all out of teams in the Champions Cup or whatever that was. Oh well.

Anyway, MLSLive.tv is back. $20 to watch all the games on the internet. Actually, its less games than last year, mainly because if they're FSE, ESPN or HDNet, they're not on the net.

http://web.mlsnet.com/products/

Also, USLLive is also a go, but that's like $70 for all the USL1 games.

MLS kicks off Saturday on ABC in HD. I'm having to TiVo it.

Well, I guess we're all out of teams in the Champions Cup or whatever that was. Oh well.

The ghetto champions league of CONCACAF is what it was. Winner of that tourney plays in the world club cup againt the champs of each region. Basically it would have likely meant that got at least 1 game against a real deal European or South American team.

I knew DC United was up against it going on the road tied 1-1, but that was a choke job by Houston.

RBNY-Columbus was not much better. Below freezing, snow flurries, and a 0-0 scoreline. I really thought RBNY deserved to win but they just couldn't put the ball in the goal despite having a number of very solid opportunities.

Holy fuck, Kenny Cooper rifled a shot on the run. That thing moved 6 or 7 times in 25 yards, but it ended up spinning right into a dead footed keeper. If he had been able to place that higher, the galaxy keeper would have been beat by a mile.

You must have missed the play I posted my response about. He had the ball stolen, was not even touched, then grabbed his legs and yelled and rolled around in pain for a good 2 minutes. He was never touched, not by a foot, leg, ball, nothing touched him at all.

Juan Pablo Angel to Red Bull New York is official... Woot! Definitely needed someone to pair up with Altidore (who is for real), and now this makes me pretty excited about their overall hopes for the season. They've looked vastly improved in 3 of their 4 halves of play this year (2nd half @ Columbus was shit).

Is it me or does the overall level of play seem up this year? I watched Kansas City-DC and that was one hell of a game.

Mr. Wednesday
04-17-2007, 04:16 PM
The level of play should be rising — they're bringing some serious foreign talent into the league, and more importantly, every new rookie class is going to benefit from the rising skill level in the American player pool (that is, according to a sampling of youth soccer followers on BigSoccer, the skill and level of play at the age-group levels is growing by leaps and bounds).

Anyway, Redbulls looked great the other day. Altidore looked fantastic, he is just what US Soccer has been missing.

Slightly Off Topic, my friend and I are running an MLS Football Manager game. He is using the Dynamo and I'm using the Red Bulls. It has been a blast.

Doh... side effect of the Juan Pablo Angel signing was needing to clear out a roster spot... RBNY just traded Marvell Wynne to Toroton for a 2nd round draft pick. I'm really fond of Wynne and he and Altidore are my favorite players on the team.

Columbus has now played in two 0-0 games, and having watched one of them along with parts of 3 other games, I just have to say... if the league is supposed to have raised its level of play, it's not showing on the field. The Galaxy/Dallas match last week wasn't too bad, but the others I've seen have just not been very good.

Might just be a matter of what teams people are seeing. New York is definitely looking way better than last year. DC has consistently played at a higher level than most the league. Houston is a solid team. Outside of that unfortunately, you may catch a turd of a game. I will say though that Kansas City looked fantastic against DC, and the pace of that game was probably the single best I've seen in any MLS game to date.

Yeah, I have to admit there are only a select number of teams I will attempt to watch. All the Red Bulls games, but then DC, Houston, and probably New England. I'm sure i'll add LA to the list when Beckham arrives. I remember watching a Colorado- Real Salt Lake game last year that was probably the worst game i've ever seen in any league.

I'd say its about 60% of the games are better, 40% is about the same/worse. New York has looked much better than last year, but they were a complete mess towards the end of the year. DC has been solid attacking, but their defense is amazingly horrible. Their wings on the backline arejust laughable. New England is also going to be exposed defensively sooner rather than later.

I'd say on the attacking front, MLS has generally gotten better, but I actually think the defenses have become disproportionately worse, or at the very least, a lot of teams are very much either good offense/bad defense or vice versa. I think when things settle, Houston and KC may be the two teams that stand out as having the best overall balance in the league.

I was happy to be at the Red Bulls - Houston game today. Absolutely PERFECT weather, decent crowd, good game. The Clint Mathis PK miss was painful, and i thought the straight red on him was very harsh. I was focused on the challenge during the play, and my gut feeling was that it was a clear yellow, but the red seemed a bit much. I did record the game on TV so i'll check it out at some point just to satisfy my own curiosity.

Hard not to be elated with a win over the defending champs while down a man for 55 minutes.

Jozy Altidore is the real deal, a couple fantastic runs and one great goal that was the eventual winner. I don't think he's long for this league - he's gonna be too good. He turns 18 in November and he clearly has loads of potential. I'm not sure what type of eligibility hurdles need to be cleared, but i think he's in Europe for the 2008/2009 season at latest, if not moving at season's end (mid-season transfer window in Europe). Whether he's here or not though, the US just might have an actual striker on the 2010 World Cup team.

Mr. Wednesday

Once he turns 18, the main eligibility hurdle is the WP rules for the UK, he'd be able to go to any other country immediately subject only to any sort of salary/roster requirements.

Mls.tv starts the CHivas - RSL game at the 25th minute. What, did they forget to turn on their direct tv subscription until then? The game is already 2-0, just pathetic. And in case you don't believe me, there was a game last week where for about 10 minutes, the picture would stutter and a message would pop up saying there is intereference with their sattelite and to call a direct tv number. I mean seriously, that's what the league is doing, streaming their direct tv?

Altidore was awesome yesterday. That goal was very, very well taken (in addition to really showing Onstad's age). And although the FSC announcers might have been harping on it a bit much, I definitely noticed Wattereus' techincal ability and it made a huge difference for 10-man Red Bull (compared to Onstad who cannot distribute the ball whatsoever).

Watching the KC-Chi game from the 21st. I love soccer, because rarely in any other sports do you hear "Would you fucking cover somebody" being yelled out (let alone having the announcers comment on it). I honestly think broadcasters don't care, they're just like, the people who watch soccer just don't care, and no one who would care watches

In case people are wondering, there are around 300-400 people in Kansas City watching KC and Toronto play. Its pretty nasty wind and rain, but there's literally no one on the left side of the stands.

I will actually be sitting right below them, on ground level behind a goal. I expect to get toilet paper on me if they are still using it as much as last season.

Terry Vaughn is the worst fucking ref in the fucking league.

If he's not on the take, then he's doing a damned good job of making it seem like he is.

Bullshit PK.

Even worse Red Card to Shalrie (I swear, the fucking league has it in for players who actually want to get out of the league and play in Europe. Last year Dempsey, this year Shalrie).

Revs still get a point, but they might as well fucking give that point in the standings to Terry Vaughn.

Mr. Wednesday

The PK is arguable. I think it was borderline but correct.

The red card is one of the worst calls I've ever seen, though. What Vaughn thought he saw, isn't what happened.

Easy Mac

The PK was the right call. There's absolutely no reason for Riley to make that charge right there. Just absolutely stupid on his part.

The red was harsh. In full speed, with Joseph coming from behind, it looked like a bad challenge, but it was a yellow card if you just follow the rules.

You want to get more than a point, tell Riley to stop acting like a little bitch and learn to play defense. He should have been red carded for his posturing with Emilio. It was obvious Emilio wasn't even trying to get a call, he got knocked while off balance and fell over. That was a disgrace that Vaughn gave a yellow to Emilio.

Agreed on both counts. The foul on the PK looked utterly ridiciculous at full speed. And it was totally unnecssary so he really only has himself to blame.

Good overall game by the way. The MLS games I've caught this year have generally been at a pretty solid level of play.

Houston had so many damn chances on set pieces and coudln't get anything from them. Still enjoyed the game last week since I don't get to go to many, but would have been better to walk away with a win.

I watched the play again, and for some reason, when I saw it originally, I thought Joseph tackled the ball cleanly.

I still disagree with the sending off (strongly), but I do think it was a foul.

This?

There was trouble in the 43rd minute when Chicago goalie Matt Pickens objected to the way Dichio challenged for the ball in front of the goal. An enraged Pickens picked himself off the ground and headed straight to Dichio. Shoves were exchanged, drawing a flood of players into the fracas.

When the dust settled, Dichio and Fire midfielder Diego Gutierrez were ejected, with Dichio leaving to a standing ovation. Replays showed that Pickens may have had a legitimate beef with the 6-foot-3 striker, who was using his arms and legs to make a nuisance of himself with the goalie.

Looks like Toronto was a fantastic choice for expansion by the MLS, as the atmosphere may already (arguably) be the best in the league. Could Vancouver and/or Montreal be a possibility in the near future?

Watched a bit of the Toronto/Chicago Game today on FSC.

Looks like Toronto was a fantastic choice for expansion by the MLS, as the atmosphere may already (arguably) be the best in the league. Could Vancouver and/or Montreal be a possibility in the near future?

No doubt about it. The Toronto crowd is loud and it will make Toronto a very tough place for visiting teams to come play.

 Yeah, great fans. Showing support for the home team by throwing their complementary seat cushions on the field and at the opponents sidelines/players. Real stand up move.

Things got bad enough that they had to bring on a shielded bench for the visitors at halftime. Kicker is they werent even losing at the time as they normally do (worst team in MLS)

LOL, a shielded bench for foam seat covers. What a bunch of nancys on that Chicago bench. Oh, and brainiac, they are a first year expansion team. You expected them to go undefeated? Though they are good enough to beat the hell out of Chicago. You'd better not come to Toronto for a game. Wouldn't want you running away crying by half-time.

What's up with the Fire? After starting out 3-0-1, they've lost three straight, including a game last night at home against FC Dallas that they had no business losing.

14 Corners for the Fire to only 1 for Dallas, and they still lose 2-1?

Also it looks like Toronto is going to be a very tough place to get a Win the rest of the way. This may end up being one of those kinds of teams that has a bit of a split personality, home vs. away.

Angel is ridiculous. He is the best player I have ever seen in MLS. The guy can flat out play football. He is not selfish, he works hard, and it defends his teammates. Altidore will learn from him hopefully.

I am not sure what was more pitiful: Chicago or the crowd? The Fire were awful in the attack against a makeshift Red Bulls defense. The only attack they had was to run right at the central defenders. The Fire have no young talent except for Mapp and Rolfe, who are inconsistent. I could see this team sucking badly down the road.

ZERO promotion this year relative to last year. I think they're simply waiting for the new stadium, which could backfire because I think they've run into delays.

The offical attendance was 9,357, but I think there was 7K maximum in the place. There was a legit 20K there last night for Ireland-Ecuador, so it was easy to make the relative comparison.

Are the Redbulls in the Superliga this year?

No, and they're already out of the US Open Cup. I think that's actually a good thing, as I think being able to focus on nothing but the league gives them a tremendous chance of finishing top 4 and qualifying for the SuperLiga next year, and hopefully making a run at the Supporters Shield (the true fan's title).

More good players, definitely. Donovan, Beckham, Reyna, Angel - these are proven international players. Don't forget Wales' Carl Robinson in there as well :p

Surely this has got to be a watershed year for the league with the hype of the Beckham signing and the increase in the quality of the play. I'd have thought if franchises like the Red Bulls are losing money and falling attendance figures at the end of the year it is going to send sponsors running for the hills.

Maybe they think two teams playing at that stadium in New Jersey will bring in more money? Whatever. MLS sends more mixed signals than a college girl, you never know where they're courting, where they want teams or don't and it's kinda silly, because it's not like they're the prettiest girl in the room to begin with.

I don't believe the league can legally do so before 2010, for starters. I think this is moderately unlikely. Red Bull attendance is VERY weak right now, so adding a 2nd team seems like a recipe for disaster. The Galaxy had very strong attendance before Chivas was added, so it's a whole different situation.

The assumption is that there's enough fans in the NYC metro area to support more than one team. We went to the game thursday against RBNY and it was great. Hard to not have fun when your team wins 4-0. We left Houston saturday night, but now I wish we had stayed to see the Dynamo take out DC 1-0 last night.

On a side note, we had a guy sitting a few rows in front of us (we were behind goal) who seemed a little too obsessed with Craig Waibel. So a sign about Waibel shuting down Angel is fine, but 6-7 different signs about Waibel gets kind of scary. I think he was in love with him.

Dola- Forgot, I meant to post this...

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber will be in Seattle on Tuesday, to announce that city will receive an expansion franchise to begin play potentially in the 2009 season.
The Seattle team will be owned by Hollywood movie studio executive Joe Roth, Seattle Sounders managing partner Adrian Hanauer and Vulcan Sports and Entertainment, the owner of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.

Details on the team will be unveiled at a Tuesday press conference in Seattle.

Seattle has a storied soccer tradition as it was home to the Seattle Sounders of the North American Soccer League from 1974 until 1983. The city is currently home to the Seattle Sounders of the USL First Division. The Sounders have been crowned champions of the USL First Division two of the past three years including 2007, and have produced MLS players such as Houston's Brian Ching and Chivas USA's Maykel Galindo.

Seattle will be the 15th team in Major League Soccer, after the addition of the San Jose Earthquakes, which will begin play in 2008, the league's 13th season.

MLS plans to expand to 16 teams by 2010 and could feature as many as 18 clubs by 2012. Expansion conversations continue with more than a dozen communities throughout the United States and Canada. Commissioner Garber will discuss each market at his year-end state of the league address on November 16 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Double, delayed dola-

I am freakin' out man. I am in Houston right now, the game is just under 2 hours away. I am sitting here tonight and want so badly to go to the game. The problem is, even though the wife so go ahead, there is no way I could spend the money right now. I just threw away $195 last night when I got a ticket for expired inspection sticker on my trailer while going through a weigh station. There is no way I can turn around and spend money on a cab ride to the game, a ticket, and a cab ride back to my truck.

I will sit and wear my Dynamo hat in my truck, and hopefully the game comes in on the radio for me. I am not sure how this trucks radio picks up AM, I have never listened to regular radio in here but usually trucks suck with AM radio. I think they have a FM station, but I think that may be spanish. Going to have to check.

What does MLS stand for again?

Cringer
11-10-2007, 07:36 PM
Multiple Listing Service, a service for realtors to see what houses are up for sale in their area. Or Major League Soccer.

Pretty much a sell-out in Houston for tonight. Will be a record crowd for the Dynamo, breaking their 35,000+ from the game against L.A. a few weeks ago. I have the game on crappy static A.M. radio with some guy with an accent. Woohoo! Starting any minute now.

M Brian Mullan is hurt pretty bad 3 minutes in. Finally walked off, not sure if he is back in or not.

edit: phew, back in a minute later.

Is there any site where you can watch MLS games like on Yahoo or ESPN? The Yahoo interface seems to be lacking

There's probably a P2P link for it, but the MLSNET.Com video service won't be working, since it's a national (FSC) game

Four guys in the box and nobody could get a shot off, damn.

(that sounds like a failed porn scene)

Crap. Now that I said the above, the whole game sounds like a porn play by play. Soccer isn't meant for the radio me thinks.

KC is the #8 seed, the Dynamo better be better. Fuck I wish I was there. I can see the confetti and the streamers in my mind!!

I can imagine. The Texian Army sit back there, though usually farther up right above the walkway. The 15 rows or so right behind the net are usually normal fans (where I usually sit when I go) with a few Texian Army mixed in.

KC player hurt bad from what I am hearing. Not something I would wish on any team.

Dang, I wish I could find a website to watch it on. I'm curious how the Wizards are doing but I'm watching the KU game on tv so I need something visual, not audio.

I'm with you on that one, the radio blows for this. As with football tomorrow though, I take what I can get for live anything when it comes to my favorite teams.

A little over 30,000 fans? Blah, the radio guys made it sound much higher at the begining of the game.

Just saw the Jaqua goal on the halftime highlights now that I gots me some something to look at. Nice header man. The offside call on DeRosario was close IMO.

"uh, I've been better."

Congratulations to the 2007 MLS Cup Champions, (Team Name)

And put it in the team's color.

Congratulations to the 2007 MLS Cup Champions, the New England Revolution

I was still listening to the radio at that point, so I can't comment. I do know in the second half that there were a couple of missed calls going both ways.
