Anyone play this one? I just got it via a trade. It's the first game in quite a while that kept me up to 2:00 AM, but I'm still not sure what I'm doing. The manual is horrible and the tutorial just teaches basic gameplay concepts.
For those who have played it, can you give a newbie some hints?

I have Europa Univeralis II sitting there as well but yet to be played. That kind of time has yet to be found.
I like the concept of taking and leading a country from famine to feast or vise versa, but this really looks like a complicated mess. Is this the best game out there for a war/dynasty setup. I like the IDEA of this game, but I don't think I like the commitment it requires. I am the gamer Skydog hates most.
Senator,
Have you tried Medieval Total War? I found it a lot less "involved", but still challenging and interesting. Also, if you are limited for time, you can skip some of the battles and have it auto calculate the results (I usually do this on lopsided battles).

Sen . . .
Have you looked at EU2's cousin, HoI? It's suppose to be a shorter game and far more combat-oriented than EU2. Fritz has the game and might be able to give you some idea as to likes/dislikes (see: Game forum).

Maybe if EU2 is really worth the time investment I wouldn't mind trying it. Right now, it looks like a blob of micromanagement, and I can't even pretend to have that kind of time. With FOF4 and OOTP and TODB, at least I can play a few quick games, leave it alone and come back to it in a week without forgetting where I put my fortifications.
Thanks for the heads up on the other games, I will check them out. I even enjoyed the 2 Medal of Honor series, and would like to do something similar, it's just I am very behind the curve on understanding what it GOOD and what is passable.

What trade did you take up? I've only run a thieves guild so I cant be much help outside that.
Checking the forums for the game is a great place to get info also.

Let's see I have played through a few dyanasties. Just start a few test ones, to get the feel for the trading system, and what type of products you can make with each job. here's the jobs that I have been, and what city, and little info.
Paris:
Priest:
priest is easy, becuase you start off close to the marketplace, and make money pretty easily. You can hold services which make you money, and people buy indulgences. You also have a few useful products that you can make.
Blacksmith:
Fun job, once you get a goldsmith, the moeny litteraly pours in.
Berlin:
Joiner:
I found Joiner to be the toughest job that I have played. I have found the products to have a great diversity in their prices. One day they will be really hihg, the next really low. None the less, I have enjoyed this one the most.
Guradsmen: Another fun job. You can get a lot of easy money from thsi as well. You can raid thieves guilds, and robber baron's fortressess.
AP: These are things that you can improve you skills with, see a doctor, and other stuff like this. I try to make sure I have a lot, but they really start to pile up when I get clsoe to dying.
Spouses:
Get one ASAP. If you want to continue you game, you need a kid. The kid has to be 12 for you to take over. So the sooner, you get married, the more kids you can have, and the more choices you get.
Political offices:
This is probably the most frustrating part of the game. For me at least. If you have tehe opportunity to run for a office, take it. You get the office income, and might even be able to change a few laws.

Don't mean to threadjack here...but what about EU2 do people consider micro-management? I've played the game a lot and don't think there's much micro-management in it....dunno.

I had EU2 and later in the game it seems like there's a lot of micromanagement. Early on, it's reasonable. But once you've conquered half the world, it becomes burdensome.

I guess one person's "too much micromanagement" is another person's "no problem." I found MOO3 to either have waaaaaay too much micromanagement or be a boring game if you let the computer run everything. Yet, I really liked EU2 and never thought of it as having too much micromanagement. So, to each their own!

I play EU II a lot and I don't think it's much mico-management. A lot of the popups you can choose to have show up at the bottom of the screen instead. By the end of the game, I'm not as concerned about certain things as I was when I was just starting out. It's by far one of my most favorite games of all time.
I have HOI as well. Haven't played it near as much. From what I have played, it's a pretty good game, plenty of depth and strategy. It is a lot to keep up with though, much more than EUII.
I liked EUII, but just couldn't get into HOI. I know they have similar interfaces and everything, but it just wasn't the same for me. *shurg*

I think HOI is Hearts of Iron.

EUII and HOI are excellent, but if one finds EUII to have too much micromanagement, I would say definately stay away from HOI.

New patch released recently for EU2, by the way.
JoWood is apparently still not playing nice with 4Head so there doesn't seem to have been much progression on Europa's front.
