View Full Version : OT: The FOFC Music Draft - Voting Thread

Maple Leafs
02-26-2007, 01:14 PM
This is the voting thread for the FOFC Music Draft. The original draft thread can be found here:
http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=57117

Competitors drafted "teams" of ten songs. No song could be picked more than once, and no artist could be used more than once. Each team had to fill a roster in the following categories:

- The Classic. This song has stood the test of time.
- The Epic. This is a sprawling masterpiece that makes you reach for your lighter.
- The Arena Rocker. The kind of song that kicks the most ass when performed in front of 20,000 or so drunk people.
- The Trendsetter. A song that helped shaped the music to come after it. Tread carefully -- go too obscure and the voters will punish you.
- The Love Song. Self-explanatory.
- The One-Hit Wonder. Admit it, most of them are good. Oh yes they are!
- The Party Song. A song that celebrates sex, drugs, booze, or some combination.
- The Crossover Hit. This is a song that mixes and matches musical genres.
- The Cover. A song that covers something that came before (not the original)
- The Anti-Establishment Song. The best music is the kind that gives the big F.U. to authority.

A note on categories: The list above is exactly what was posted in the original rules thread. As the draft went along it became clear that some of the categories were somewhat unclear and/or poorly defined. Some songs were natural fits in a given category, others required some creative stretching. It is up the voter to determine which songs work best in which categories, and to factor that into their voting choices. No further guidance will be given -- it's your call.

Voting format
You will vote for your first, second and third choices, with points awarded in 5/3/1 format.

Please post in something resembling this format:
1. Team name
2. Tean name
3. Team name

Comments on why you voted as you did are strongly encouraged. Comments from participants and observers are encouraged. Participants can campaign for votes as they see fit, keeping in mind that voters may or may not appreciate that. If you change your mind, please edit your original vote post rather than posting again.

Draft participants are allowed to vote.

Please bold your votes, and do no bold any commentary (so that I can scan the thread for votes as we go).

Admittedly there will be some songs I'm not as familiar with cause I don't dig pop music as much as some of you. Oilers had some REALLY solid choices in my mind. A lot of the other teams left me scratching my head several times. Neat idea, pretty good execution of the idea, too. Didn't follow the thread past the first couple of pages, but I was glad to see the result.

This is interesting to me, because I feel Buccaneer is bottom of the barrell in this thing - by a large margin.

Several just bad song picks, and multiple picks that just have absolutely no business in the category that they are in.

Boo to this list.

fwiw, I don't think "Brickhouse" fits the definition that Maple Leafs laid out for "Party Song" very well... it fits what i think if you went out on the street and asked someone for a party song would say, but not ML's definition.

Well, I don't know much about music and readily admit it...but Bucc's and Subby's lists were two of the only ones that I recognized all the songs. Half the lists included at least one song I'd never even heard of. Again, I'm no music expert but if you have to be a music expert to know the songs then it's not a very good list IMO. :D

I hope when people vote they take a look at the categories and whether the songs fit into thos categories - particularly based on Maple Leaf's definitions.

Don't just vote because you like an artist or song, look at how it fits within the frame of the game.

1. Maple Leafs - I thought his classic pick was a great one, in the way that he went a little outside the box to get it. Great steal on the epic, great love song, great party song, and a nice last round steal with NiN. Didn't love the Heartbreak Hotel pick, but this was pretty much a miss for everybody, save for 2 teams.
2. lordscarlet - Top choices in crossover and trendsetter. (YG)FFYR(TP) was a great party song. Nice mid-draft snag with AC/DC. If I had more extensive music knowledge, I might've given him the top slot.
3. Oilers9911 - Loved the first back-to-back picks. Didn't like the love song or the one hit wonder.

3) Buccaneer

I followed this thread from the beginning and thought overa;; Subby and Bucc separated themselves. But looking at the complete lists, I was shocked at just how solid Oilers team was. Getting KISS in the 6th round for arena rock, is SOLID IMO.

Quite fun to follow, next time I just wanna participate.

That's how I went at it. Not to single out NoMyths...but I disagree on "Where the Streets Have No Name" as an arena rock song, "Lose Yourself" was in no way a crossover, and "Hey Ya" doesn't fit the definition of a party song.

1.lordscarlet- Tops in the trendsetter, party, and cross-over categories, and strong in many others.

2.Subby-Any list with Stairway to Heaven and Freebird is up there in my book.

3.Butter Of 69-Butter of 69's list seems stronger every time I look at it. I don't hate the Gary Glitter pick as much as everyone else.

Ntndeacon had a good list, but Peter Frampton rings hollow to my generation. Buccaneer had a good one-hit wonder pick, but taking Imagine as a love song just to keep anyone else from having it was a bad strategy.

NoMyths made two noticeable blunders, the biggest of which including that distasteful Lee Greenwood song in his list.

Maple Leafs came on strong towards the end. Unchained Melody is the most recognizable love song of the lot, IMO. Louis Armstrong was an inspired selection as a classic. I actually had Maple Leafs as my third place selection until I went to dissect Butter's team.

Lathum has a strong roster as well. I disagree with anyone that says Smells Like Teen Spirit wasn't a huge trendsetter. He definitely wasted Jimi Hendrix for everyone else, and if I punished Bucc for that, I have to punish Lathum. Also, Onyx and Biohazard? I mean, I guess Evan Seinfeld got Tera Patrick, so someone must have cared for it. I am not that someone.

Vtbub had a good draft. He whiffed on the love song. How about "Maybe I'm Amazed"? Louie Louie as a party song? Meh. I think it would been great in the trendsetter category, but he already had a good one in "Rock Around The Clock". Personally, I think Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time" should have been picked because, hey, it's awesome.

Oilers9911...that lovesong is just atrocious. It's already become completely 100% passe. I've never even heard that Cowboy Junkies song, so that makes it hard to be endeared to it. Faith No More is overrated. The classic and anti-establishment picks were good, though.

People are going to cry about how some people aren't staying true to the spirit of the game or whatever, but I think when it comes down to it, it's all about music you like. And if it comes down to 4-5 people in someone's vote, the person who has more music that the voter likes is going to get it every time. It's not as objective as you would have it seem.

Not that I'm saying "vote for me", but hey... you have to go with what you like and what you think fits in the end.

1)Team Butter_ of_69
2)Team ntndeacon
3)Team Maple Leafs

Butter got my top pick pretty easily, with one of my top three in 7 different categories and #1's for love & crossover.

2nd & 3rd was closer than close, with each getting a pair of 1's & a pair of 2's. (1's for ntndeacon's classic & epic, 1's for Leafs one hit wonder & party). The deciding tiebreaker was that deacon edged ML 6-4 in a head-to-head comparison.

Biggest surprise for me after tallying up everything was that lordscarlet didn't finish in my top 3, as my first glance had his list really jumping out at me strongest. I thought ntndeacon's choice for Classic was the most spot-on pick in the entire draft, and thought the crossover category seemed to give people more trouble than I would have expected as some of the songs apparently didn't cross over far enough to even enter my consciousness.

As it should be, I didn't agree with/know all 10 of anyone's rosters, but five rosters stood out for me. A brief rundown of where I am:

Maple Leafs - all fit the categories (unsurprisingly as it's his game) but not necessarily stellar picks: GnR, Tom Jones & Cardigans, Nena the strongest IMHO

NoMyths - some good choices, especially like CCR for anti-establishment, Not what you might immediately think of, but works well. Never heard of the one-hit wonder though.

Subby - strong start, but Bow Wow Wow had more than one hit (in particular Wild In The Country) and I just plain didn't know too many of his selections

Butter of 69 - Queen, Blondie, Kool & The Gang, Fugees all excellent picks, Anarchy in the UK is the Dan Marino to John Elway's God Save The Queen - all time great, but not the winner :)

lordscarlet - nine great picks, but (and it might say more about my taste in music than the choice, but that's what my voting's based on) I don't know the classic selection...

Buccaneer - good choices, but don't know the Rush or Bobby Gentry choices, and Imagine, although a superb song, doesn't work as a true love song for me as much as, say, 'Jealous Guy'

Lathum - a mix of great choices or simply never heard of them :)

ntndeacon - Didn't know a few, Soft Cell again were not a one hit wonder (in particular Say Hello , Wave Goodbye), and not sure Another Brick in the Wall is epic as described in the category definition...

vtbub - don't know the McCartney song, Yesterday is a classic, but IMHO not deservedly so, but like the rest of the choices... Negative marks for two McCartney songs though?

Oilers9911 - like some of the others, mostly fantastic choices, but didn't know three, and Celine Dion was in there. That last point was the one that did it for me, unfortunatley...

So what order:

Of the 5, Butter of 69 was DQd off my list for choosing Gary Glitter, and for A-ha as a one hit wonder (not that the latter is a bad song, but they had a dozen hits), and vtbub lost too much for the two McCartney songs. So my top three:

1. NoMyths
2. Maple Leafs
3. lordscarlet (only not top beacuse of Sam Cooke - by defitnition you have to know the classic choice)

VPI97

I used a simple, unscientific, five minute scoring method that entailed rating each song and how it relates to the category, then adding a bonus point on the end for each song a person selected that rated a 10 in my book...bonus points were also used as the tiebreaker.

Top Three
1. 81 points - Buccaneer
2. 81 points - Subby
3. 80 points - vtbub

Note: lordscarlet tied for third with 80 points and had the same bonus points as vtbub, but since vtbub nailed the Arena category with Enter Sandman (the VT football team entrance music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGB6SBp01qQ)), he gets the nod.

Also, here's what scored perfect 10's in my book:

Classic - "Yesterday", The Beatles - vtbub
Epic - None
Arena - "Welcome to the Jungle", Guns 'N Roses - Maple Leafs
Arena - "Enter Sandman", Metallica - vtbub
Trend - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang - lordscarlet
Trend - "Johnny B. Goode", Chuck Berry - Buccaneer
Love - "Unforgettable", Natalie Cole with Nat King Cole - lordscarlet
One-Hit - "Tainted Love", Soft Cell - ntndeacon
Party - "1999", Prince - Maple Leafs
Party - "Girls,Girls,Girls", Motley Crue - Buccaneer
Party - "Louie Louie", The Kingsman - vtbub
Cover - "Sweet Jane", Cowboy Junkies - Oilers9911
Anti-E - "Fuck tha Police", N.W.A. - Subby

Maple Leafs - all fit the categories (unsurprisingly as it's his game)
Just to be clear -- once the draft starts, my intepretation of the categories didn't mean anything more than anyone else's. If you think one of my pick's doesn't fit your understanding of what the category should be, punish my as you would anyone else. (Maybe even moreso for not coming up with a clearer description.)

As I said, I thing your choices were solid. The only description that I'd debate is the Party Song - I'd call a Party song one that within the first few bars puts a smile on your face & gets everybody dancing. But 1999 is in that vein, so it works.

I was trying to say you were in the top 3-4 in each category, but maybe not number 1 in anything. But consistency works :)

This is interesting to me, because I feel Buccaneer is bottom of the barrell in this thing - by a large margin.

Several just bad song picks, and multiple picks that just have absolutely no business in the category that they are in.

Boo to this list.

You are off my Christmas card list. :)

I'm trying not to say much on this, but I am amazed at how much people are completely ignoring the category descriptions. In particular, Crossover. That's why I picked this in my first round spot. In my mind, there are only two songs in the entire Crossover category that actually fit the description ("Slam" in addition to "Walk This Way") and yet I see people placing many other songs above both of these in their ratings. I just don't get it.

Biggest surprise for me after tallying up everything was that lordscarlet didn't finish in my top 3, as my first glance had his list really jumping out at me strongest.

See above. :) And you really should go with your gut! :p

3. lordscarlet (only not top beacuse of Sam Cooke - by defitnition you have to know the classic choice)

Check amazon or itunes. I bet you've heard it and don't realize it. :) I can definitely understand the logic, though, and I took that risk.

3. vtbub

I have Bucc and Subby really close, but I give Bucc the nod with Satisfaction as his classic (which I think is a very important category). Great value to get that in the 2nd round.

I rate vtbub and Lathum as a close 3/4.

1) Team Butter of 69: IMHO, Butter of 69 was solid in nearly every category, and the Gary Glitter pick was inspired. Not too sure about Heart of Glass as a trendsetter, but that was my only quibble.

2) Team NoMyths: As unpredictable as Butter was solid. The Doors' "The End" is a great pick for epic, as is CCR for anti-establishment. I'm not too keen on the Sinead O'Connor cover pick or U2 for arena rocker, but I have to reward the resourcefulness of the other picks.

3) Team Lordscarlet: Great picks for crossover, arena rocker, one hit wonder. I didn't care for the party-song pick (the song's too sophmoric to really work at a party) and the epic pick was a bit shaky, compared to some of the others, but overall a strong group of selections.

most memorable draft moment: Subby's draft was on the verge of collapse when he went back-to-back Kinks, but he recovered nicely.

I assume you mean Crossover here. I still claim that I Can't help loving you does mix genres. Taking a country feel.. especially the back up singers and crossing that with the R&B soul sound of Ray Charles.

I will have to give it a relisten. :) But I've still seen people with top 3 lists that have neither of the two songs I mentioned on it. And someone that had Lee Greenwood as the top OHW. :) I don't mind opinion differences, but when they just plain aren't right (I don't see anyone picking "Imagine" as the best Love Song) it's frustrating. :)

Yep, I didn't like the "Imagine" pick either but I thought his other picks were strong enough to make up for it. I at least knew the song well enough to know it didn't fit my idea of a love song, which was more than I could say for some of the other songs. My approach was that I'd rather have a song I knew that didn't fit the category very well than songs I'd never heard of and might/might not fit.

BEST EVAR: Maple Leafs (favorite pick: Thriller)

SECOND BEST EVAR: ntndeacon (favorite pick: Good Vibrations)

THIRD BEST EVAR: Buccaneer (favorite pick: Fight the Power)

It was tough to leave vtbub off the list since Yesterday is, IMHO, the greatest non-classical song of all time. But, as an overall body of songs, I like the three choices above just a little better.

1. vtbub
2. Maple Leafs
3. Buccaneer

I used a points system to judge. The result actually had Maple Leafs and Bucc tied--it was very close, but I will give the edge to Maple Leafs, because "Unchained Melody" was a really inspired pick, in a category where I felt most people stumbled.

So, without further ado, my critique of the top finishers:

3. Buccaneer - My favorite picks were "Born in the USA" (best in that category, in my opinion) and "Fight the Power" (might have put him over the top if I didn't like "Fuck the Police" better). Hurt by the "Imagine" pick and my bias against Rush. Other than that, smart picks everywhere else.

2. Maple Leafs - Best pick: "Unchained Melody" (again, especially because there were a lot of questionable picks in that category). Not a lot of super-standouts otherwise, but almost all of the picks were top-quality. The Tom Jones cover was the weakest one for me.

1. vtbub - In some ways, there is some inconsistency in pick quality compared to the other two, but I think vtbub came out on top by picking some formidable songs. "Yesterday" was the best of the classic category for me. Like the other two, all but a few of the picks seemed very well thought out. I thought there were more top-tier songs on the vtbub list though. Didn't like the other McCartney song on the list, but the other songs on the roster oughtweigh this oversight.

Biggest Reach: Like a Rolling Stone (Classic) - going 1.3 for this song in a stacked category was a mistake - could have waited a round. At least.

Most Inspired Pick: Fuck Tha Police (Anti) - Best use of curse word in an on-line music draft.
WTF?? Pick: Lola (Love) - Trying too hard here to be non-traditional with the pick.
Biggest Reach: You Really Got Me (Cover) - Van Halen a better arena choice and this cover isn't 4th round value.

Most Inspired Pick: Killing Me Softly (Cover) - nice darkhorse pull here
WTF?? Pick: none
Biggest Reach: Rock and Roll (Part Two) - just came out of nowhere - would have been inspired in late rounds.
Overall Draft Grade: A- (good solid draft - went out on a limb going Bohemian Rhapsody so quickly, but it worked out).

Best Value Pick: Baby Got Back (One Hit) - Some bias here, b/c I love this song.
Most Inspired Pick: Fight the Power (Anti) - risks a first rounder, but grabs the quintessential anti song and the gamble pays off.
WTF?? Pick: Imagine (Love) - 'nuff said about the disaster.
Biggest Reach: See above

Cover - 8.9 - "A Little Help From My Friends", Joe Cocker
Anti-Establishment - 5.2 - "American Idiot", Green Day

Best Value Pick: Slam (Cross): One of the great rock-rap crossovers and one of the few true crossovers chosen in the draft. In the 10th!
Most Inspired Pick: A Little Help... (Cover) - One of the great underrated covers
WTF?? Pick: Foxy Lady (Classic) - of all the Hendrix songs you could have chosen...
Biggest Reach: At Last (Love) - Would have been there for you at 10.9.
Overall Draft Grade: B- (Major Hendrix whiff, love reach, lame anti offset by inspired later round choices).

Crossover Hit - 4.5 - "I Can't Stop Loving You", Ray Charles

Anti-Establishment - 3.6 - "London Calling", The Clash

Best Value Pick: My Way (Classic) - nice against the grain choice here
Most Inspired Pick: Shout (Party) - nothing says party like the Shout scene from Animal House
WTF?? Pick: I Can't Stop Loving... (Cross) - 4th rounder? Try 11th rounder.
Biggest Reach: Good Vibrations (Trend) - First rounder on this one? Probably could have waited at least a round.

Arena Rocker - 6.4 - "Enter Sandman", Metallica

Crossover Hit - 10.4 - "On The Road Again", Willie Nelson
Cover - 4.4 - "I Will Always Love You", Whitney Houston
Anti-Establishment - 7.6 - "Cop Killer", Body Count

Best Value Pick: Enter Sandman (Arena) - sure the category is packed, but Metallica in the 6th? After Etta James?
Most Inspired Pick: Yesterday (Classic) - strong start for team vtbub - great pick
WTF?? Pick: My Love (Love) - lucky Metallica was still around in round 6
Biggest Reach: Rock Around the... (Trend) - Hard to believe anyone had The Ol' Comets on their radar this early.
Overall Draft Grade: B- (Fairly spotty, inconsistent. Great 6-9 recovery from a few stumbles).

Anti-Establishment - 4.1 "We're Not Gonna Take It", Twisted Sister

Best Value Pick: Tie between Epic (Cross) and Rock and Roll (Arena)
Most Inspired Pick: Sweet Jane (Cover) - this old guy was impressed - smart pull there - beautiful song.
WTF?? Pick: Old Time Rock and Roll (Party) - yeah they play this one at the octagenarian mixers up at the country club
Biggest Reach: Macarena (One Hit) - sure it is a definitive one hitter, but the category is so loaded, you could have waited.
Overall Draft Grade: B+ - Really Strong start, finish. Much better upon full review.

Not to pick on Butter of 69, but surely a one hit wonder can only have had one hit? Although I might have been harsh in saying A-ha had a dozen hits (that was in the UK, not the US surprisingly to me at least), they did have two top 20 billboard songs (Take on Me & The Sun Always Shines On TV). Two top 20 hits should at least qualify as the WTF pick...

1. lordscarlet - Dominated the crossover category with "Walk This Way", the trendsetter with "Rapper's Delight" & the party with "Fight for Your Right." I even gave him high points for "I Shot the Sheriff" in the 10th round. No real weaks spots on his roster.
2. ntndeacon - Great picks in all categories. Lost his shot at the throne with his selection of "Do You Feel Like We Do."
3. vtbub - when looking through each category, you skip over vtbub's picks. But, when you look at the entire roster, it is solid. Not a bad pick at all ... but not a category winner, either.

Quick Observations:
How does "Brick House" not show up for the Party category?
I like "Rock and Roll (Part Two)" ... in the 10th round!

The song was in the video. And video aside, the album version was like six minutes long and contained a spoken word passage by Vincent Freaking Price. For mid-80s pop music, that's pretty darn epic.

My Scoring Method
I took the whole list and selected what I thought were the top 3 songs from each category. At the end I added up the number of top 3 choices each team had, and the ones with the most got the top spots. I know this is different from what most people are doing, and it definitely biases toward super stars, but it works for me. More on that at the end.

Sorry if everything looks jumbled, I'm trying to keep with Maple Leafs request not to bold anything but your vote. :)

CLASSIC

Maple Leafs: "What a Wonderful World", Louis Armstrong (8.6)
Excellent selection! And at the 8.6 spot to boot. This song wasn't on my radar even though it is a quintessential song in a purely American genre that is undeniably a classic.

Subby: "Stairway to Heaven", Led Zeppelin (1.1)
It's Led Zeppelin, it's "Stairway to Heaven", it's 1.1. 'Nuff said.

NoMyths: "Like a Rolling Stone", Bob Dylan (1.3)
Again, quintessential artist and song. Dylan is the great American songwriter. You can certainly take some points off for his voice, but not his words.

Other notes: This was a deep category and I think everyone performed well.

EPIC

Subby: "Free Bird", Lyndyrd Skynyrd (3.1)
I note later my surprise at Subby's finish. As I write out these evaluations I think he came on strong in the early rounds and faded (in my mind) as the draft went on. I think this is the drafting strategy that I tried to avoid -- taking big guns in deep categories early. Subby took Classic, Epic and Anti-Establishment as h is first 3 picks. Both of my top two had Trendsetter, Party Song and Crossover Hit in the first 5 rounds. Subby had all three of these categories in the bottom half of the draft. It's the only explanation I can come up with.

Butter_of_69: "Bohemian Rhapsody", Queen (1.4)
This was the first epic chosen. I think it was also one of the most obvious, along with "Free Bird". It was a hit in both the 1970s and 1990s (at least anecdotaly, I did not look up the chart numbers) which cemented it as a classic lighter-waving song.

Oilers9911: "American Pie", Don McLean (2.1)
Picked a bit early, but it was definitely on my radar. I can picture the crowd swaying to the chorus. It also hits a soft spot for me. I really wanted to pick a Buddy Holly song but I did not think it would pull the votes it deserved.

Other Notes: I think Maple Leafs choice of "Thriller" in round 5 was excellent. I originally had this as one of my top three until I went back to the definition. Thriller is a long, engaging song. However, it is not the sort of song that brings the Zippo out.

ARENA ROCKER

lordscarlet: "You Shook Me All Night Long", AC/DC (5.8)
A classic arena song taken in the fifth round.

vtbub: "Enter Sandman", Metallica (6.4)
I chose this despite being the Va Tech intro music. :) And despite my belief that there were far better Metallica songs to choose from.

Buccaneer: "Born in the U.S.A.", Bruce Springsteen (3.9)
It's the boss! Actually, I'm rather ambivalent toward Springsteen, but I think this qualifies well for this category.

Other Notes: I think this was overall a terribly executed category. I don't feel strongly about any of the picks and it seems like there had to be something better out there. Maybe the problem is that arena rock is so out of my realm of taste. I think half of the picks were not the best from that group (arguably: Metallica, Bruce, and U2). Gary Glitter was just -- uninspired. I think it was a "cute" choice that just didn't work out, particularly that early in the draft. My primary criteria here was envisioning the crowd singing along during the chorus. I think all/most of these qualify, but these three stand out the most to me.

TRENDSETTER

lordscarlet: "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang (2.3)
This is the definitive start to the "Rap" trend in my book.

Lathum: "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Nirvana (1.2)
My original pre-draft list had this as my top pick. Once I got position #8 I knew it would be gone and "Rapper's Delight" came into my head. I think this is also the definitive trendsetter in the sense of popular music. I know others came before them, but if you ask 90% of the population who began the grunge trend, they will say Nirvana.

Oilers9911: "Blitzkrieg Bop", The Ramones (8.1)
This was also on my short list for trendsetters. I went with The Sugarhill Gang, but this was the top pick in my heart. The Ramones started the punk scene and remain a definitive punk band.

Other Notes:
These votes are defintiely influenced by my taste, generation and frame of reference. I am afraid I shafted people with great classic trendsetters, but unfortunately we're forced to make this type of decision in this voting. I would like to say that I'm not a fan of the Madonna pick. At best she started the whorey trend, but I definitely don't think she was the first woman that was successful with bubblegum pop.

LOVE SONG

Maple Leafs: "Unchained Melody", Righteous Brothers (6.6)
Great song. Great pick.

Lathum: "At Last", Etta James (4.9)
This is actually a great song, despite my desire to say otherwise. It is also the most popular "first dance" song for weddings. You can't go wrong with it. I do doubt the fourth round pick, but I think Lathum's roster held strong despite the selection so early.

NoMyths: "Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe", Barry White (7.3)
This pick caught me completely by surprise, as I believe it did everyone. For that I think it was by far the best Love Song chosen.

Other Notes:
My "Imagine" opinion has been discussed. :) As popular as the Celine Dion song was, I just couldn't give it a vote.

ONE-HIT WONDER

Maple Leafs: "99 Luftballoons", Nena (9.5)
This was on my list of possibilities. I think it's a fantastic song, and one of my favorite covers is the Goldfinger version.

lordscarlet: "Mickey", Toni Basil (9.8)
For me a great "bad one-hit wonder" pick is one that is impossible to get out of your head once it's there. I really wanted to go with "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega, unfortunately it doesn't quite qualify as a one-hit wonder.

vtbub: "Walking on Sunshine", Katrina and the Waves (9.7)
A one hit wonder, but also coming close to a classic. It's one of those songs I expected someone to pick: A song that is older and people of my generation just think of as a hit song, not as a one-hit wonder.

Other Notes:
As I have made obvious, I don't think Lee Greenwood qualifies in any way as a one-hit wonder. I amazed it was listed by one of the voters as the top one hit wonder. "God Bless the U.S.A." was Lee Greenwood's only entry into the pop charts, but he has 7 #1 Country hits and 10-15 more that made it into the top 10 country list. Macarena was almost in my top 3 list, but I bumped it for "Walking on Sunshine" and "Mickey" because of the staying power.

PARTY SONG

Maple Leafs: "1999", Prince (4.6)
Another steal. "Purple Rain" could have certainly been used in another category earlier in the draft. It was totally off my radar and I believe fits into the category nicely.

lordscarlet: "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)", Beastie Boys (4.3)
Another steal in the fourth round, and it also began the run on Party songs. I also give it credit for blocking people in one or two other categories.

ntndeacon: "Shout", The Isley Brothers (8.5)
As Subby said: Animal House.

Other Notes:
"Hey ya" I thought would have been a great choice for the crossover category (at least better than some of the others). This is where I started to feel like I was chosing myself too many times, but I suppose there's a reason I chose these songs. :)

CROSSOVER HIT

lordscarlet: "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith (1.8)
Runaway top crossover hit. It is one of two that fit the definition given by Maple Leafs before the draft began.

Lathum: "Slam", Onyx (10.9)
The other choice that fit the definition

Butter_of_69: "Superstition", Stevie Wonder (4.7)
I'm pretty much taking everyone's word for it that it mixes genres. I know the song, but I don't know it well and haven't gotten the chance to listen to it again since the draft started.

Other Notes:
I was tempted to only pick two here that I feel fit the category description given, but I went ahead and stuck with my metrics and picked a third.

ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT

Maple Leafs: "Head Like a Hole", Nine Inch Nails (10.5)
The tenth round?? Great pick. I don't know how none of the rest of us thought of NIN before this point. Perfect category for them.

NoMyths: "Fortunate Son", Creedence Clearwater Revival (5.3)
This also caught me by surprise. I can't believe I did not think of the Vietnam Era songs, but I would have preferred "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" by "Country" Joe McDonald.

ntndeacon: "London Calling", The Clash (3.6)
A punk song had to be taken in this category, and this was the one to choose.

COVER

Lathum: "A Little Help From My Friends", Joe Cocker (8.9)
Behind "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, I think this was the top pick to make. I was 4 picks behind and had planned to take it.

vtbub: "I Will Always Love You", Whitney Houston (4.4)
A song with two successful versions.

ntndeacon: "Proud Mary", Ike and Tina Turner (5.6)
Another song with two great versions.

Other Notes:
I wanted to pick myself again, but I deferred. :)

I was very surprised that Subby was not at the top. I think he was definitely punished by my evaluation method. Subby has a very strong team, but not a lot of superstars compared to the other lists. He probably has the most that are fourth in my book. I thought about going through and scoring each song like everyone else seems to have done just to see where Subby fell, but I think I would give more arbitrary values that way to songs I either don't care about, don't know well, or have a personal bias for or against. I tried to be as honest as possible, and that puts me in the top 3. I hope people don't see this as bias; I stand behind the choices I made in my scoring.

And the final results are:

1st: Maple Leafs
2nd: Lathum
3rd: NoMyths

Honorable Mention: I think I had a great draft (I was tied with Maple Leafs based on my scoring), but I like that everyone has taken to voting for their top three that is not themselves (or people just don't think they're in the top 3 :)).

I actually had a huge tie for third and made a choice based on nothing concrete at all. NoMyths had the most surprise top picks in my book, so I gave him the point.

vtbub: "Enter Sandman", Metallica (6.4)
Buccaneer: "Born in the U.S.A.", Bruce Springsteen (3.9)

I'm sorry, but if you don't think Welcome to the Jungle is the greatest arena rocker song of all time, then you don't know anything about music. Try cleaning the wax out of your ears for a few minutes and maybe you'll realize how much that song...

But seriously, if they do the full intro with Axl's scream, is there a song that takes a crowd from 0 to 60 faster than WTTJ?

Classic example:

Quite a few of them, at least in my experience.

Hell, "YMCA" usually gets a bigger/better pop than GNR around here, as does "Macarana", "Cotton Eyed Joe", and the Chicken Dance song ... depending upon the arena (which is probably obvious from the examples I used). But to me, if it's the arena rocker ever, it should pop not only in a traditional arena concert setting but in other large venue settings as well.

I wonder if this could actually be something that's regional to a significant extent?

I think you would probably have been better served by claiming it was a brain cramp or something.

I have claimed that and anything else I could think of. Of all of the picks, it was the first one that I wish I could do over but I wasn't around. I still would have gone with FtP for anti but not in the first or second. Satisfaction would have been my 1.9 pick and I would have picked something really cool for Epic or Arena.

2. Maple Leafs

Thank you, I appreciate your kind words. You and wade ought to get together sometime. ;)

lordscarlet
Classic - 8.3 - "A Change is Gonna Come", Sam Cooke
Epic - 6.3 - "Space Oddity", David Bowie
Arena Rocker - 5.8 - "You Shook Me All Night Long", AC/DC
Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang
Love Song - 7.8 - "Unforgettable", Natalie Cole with Nat King Cole
One-Hit Wonder - 9.8 - "Mickey", Toni Basil
Party Song - 4.3 - "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)", Beastie Boys
Crossover Hit - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith
Cover - 10.3 - "I Shot the Sheriff", Eric Clapton
Anti-Establishment - 3.8 - "Killing in the Name", Rage Against the Machine

Best Value Pick: Space Oddity (Epic) - not even on my radar - great grab
Most Inspired Pick: Killing in the Name (Anti) - BOOM
WTF?? Pick: A Change... (Classic) - Just a bunch of better choices here.
Biggest Reach: none
Overall Draft Grade: A (strategy of grabbing sparse categories early was brilliant).

I think that's what did it since he had the weakest Classic-Epic combo.

I used a points system to judge as well. I ended up with the following:
1 Lordscarlet(tops in crossover, party)
2 Maple (2nd in 2 categories... One hit wonder, party)
3 vtbub (tops in classic, trendsetter)

Buccaneer was really close (tied with vtbub but had no 1st place finishes)
and I was tied with lordscarlet if I counted myself

2. Maple Leafs
3. Buccaneer

I simply considered each song individually and assigned it a 1, 2, or 3. Bucc and vtbub actually tied for third place but Bucc's list won out in a head to head comparison.

Overall I felt Arena and Epic were the best overall catagories. Crossover had by far the lowest scores.

I was referring to a concert... I mean, if you're going to concerts where YMCA and Cotten Eye Joe are getting huge reactions, then my hat is off to you sir.

But even if you want to consider all "arena" situations, WTTJ is still on the top of the list. There's a reason it gets played before kickoff of every NFL game, 20 years after it came out. Hell, I'm as big a Gn'R fan as you'll ever find and even I think WTTJ is overplayed at major sporting events.

JonInMiddleGA

But even if you want to consider all "arena" situations, WTTJ is still on the top of the list.

That's the part I'm disagreeing with you on.

I'm not sure it'd even be one of the first five songs that come to mind in terms of getting a crowd to pop (which is why I wondered about whether there's some regionality to the reaction) . AC/DC blows them away in that regard, as does Metallica, at least in any Atlanta area crowds I've been a part of.

And in band specific concerts (i.e. the artist launching into their own song), I'd say "Sandman" and Scorpions "Hurricane" both got hotter responses than I recall GNR getting for "Jungle", and that's just off the top of my head. Ditto the aforementioned AC/DC & Metallica being among those that get more reaction than GNR gets when played in the pre-show soundtrack for any concert I've been to in years.

I scored each pick individually on a 1-10 scale, based on value, how well songs fit the category they're in, and how much I like them generally speaking. I don't think I awarded any 1's, but I came close.

Maple Leafs
Classic - 8.6 - "What a Wonderful World", Louis Armstrong - 8
Epic - 5.5 - "Thriller", Michael Jackson - 9
Arena Rocker - 1.7 - "Welcome to the Jungle", Guns 'N Roses - 10
Trendsetter - 2.4 - "Heartbreak Hotel", Elvis Presley - 8
Love Song - 6.6 - "Unchained Melody", Righteous Brothers - 9
One-Hit Wonder - 9.5 - "99 Luftballoons", Nena - 6
Party Song - 4.6 - "1999", Prince - 8
Crossover Hit - 3.5 - "Ring of Fire", Johnny Cash - 8
Cover - 7.5 - "Burning Down the House", Tom Jones & The Cardigans - 6
Anti-Establishment - 10.5 - "Head Like a Hole", Nine Inch Nails - 6

Total: 78
Analysis: Weak One-Hit Wonder and Cover picks, but really solid the rest of the way. Being a Bengal fan, I love the Welcome to the Jungle pick.

NoMyths
Classic - 1.3 - "Like a Rolling Stone", Bob Dylan - 4
Epic - 3.3 - "The End", The Doors - 4
Arena Rocker - 4.8 - "Where the Streets Have No Name", U2 - 6
Trendsetter - 2.8 - "Respect", Aretha Franklin - 6
Love Song - 7.3 - "Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe", Barry White - 9
One-Hit Wonder - 8.8 - "God Bless the U.S.A. (I'm Proud To Be An American)", Lee Greenwood - 6
Party Song - 10.8 - "Hey Ya", OutKast - 10
Crossover Hit - 6.8 - "Lose Yourself", Eminem - 4
Cover - 9.3 - "Nothing Compares 2 U", Sinead O'Connor - 9
Anti-Establishment - 5.3 - "Fortunate Son", Creedence Clearwater Revival - 10

Total: 68
Analysis: Reached for Dylan (how about "Blowin' in the Wind" for AE?), and The Doors, and took weak songs for at least 4 of the artists picked.

Subby
Classic - 1.1 - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin - 9
Epic - 3.1 - "Free Bird", Lynyrd Skynyrd - 10
Arena Rocker - 8.10 - "Mama I'm Coming Home", Ozzy Osbourne - 8
Trendsetter - 6.10 - "Like a Virgin", Madonna - 6
Love Song - 5.1 - "Lola", The Kinks - 4
One-Hit Wonder - 10.10 - "I Want Candy", Bow Wow Wow - 5
Party Song - 7.1 - "O.P.P.", Naughty by Nature - 6
Crossover Hit - 9.1 - "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", Charlie Daniels Band - 9
Cover - 4.10 - "You Really Got Me", Van Halen - 8
Anti-Establishment - 2.10 - "Fuck tha Police", N.W.A. - 9

Total: 74
Analysis: Hard to top the Classic/Epic combo, but those were some weak Love Song and 1 Hit Wonder picks. Also, Madonna didn't set much of a trend with that song, unless you consider her stardom a trend.

lordscarlet
Classic - 8.3 - "A Change is Gonna Come", Sam Cooke - 7
Epic - 6.3 - "Space Oddity", David Bowie - 9
Arena Rocker - 5.8 - "You Shook Me All Night Long", AC/DC - 9
Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang - 10
Love Song - 7.8 - "Unforgettable", Natalie Cole with Nat King Cole - 5
One-Hit Wonder - 9.8 - "Mickey", Toni Basil - 5
Party Song - 4.3 - "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)", Beastie Boys - 9
Crossover Hit - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith - 9
Cover - 10.3 - "I Shot the Sheriff", Eric Clapton - 6
Anti-Establishment - 3.8 - "Killing in the Name", Rage Against the Machine - 8

Total: 77
Analysis: I like that David Bowie song a lot, so I rate that one highly. Also, the Sugarhill Gang pick was terrific... you can't set much more of a trend than creating a whole genre of music. Weak Love Song and One Hit Wonder picks IMO... but looking at my list, I was hard on a lot of picks in those categories... probably just personal preference.

Buccaneer
Classic - 2.2 - "Satisfaction", Rolling Stones - 9
Epic - 9.9 - "2112", Rush - 5
Arena Rocker - 3.9 - "Born in the U.S.A.", Bruce Springsteen - 8
Trendsetter - 6.2 - "Johnny B. Goode", Chuck Berry - 10
Love Song - 4.2 - "Imagine", John Lennon - 5
One-Hit Wonder - 5.9 - "Baby Got Back", Sir Mix-a-Lot - 8
Party Song - 8.2 - "Girls,Girls,Girls", Motley Crue - 6
Crossover Hit - 10.2 - "Ode to Billie Joe", Bobbie Gentry - 4
Cover - 7.9 - "I Love Rock 'N Roll", Joan Jett - 8
Anti-Establishment - 1.9 - "Fight the Power", Public Enemy - 9

Total: 72
Analysis: Never heard the Rush or Bobbie Gentry songs. And Imagine as a Love Song was weak... about the only place that would fit would be classic, or even an inspired AE pick since it advocates abolishing religion.

Lathum
Classic - 3.2 - "Foxy Lady", Jimi Hendrix - 2
Epic - 2.9 - "Baba O'Riley", The Who - 10
Arena Rocker - 6.9 - "Iron Man", Black Sabbath - 6
Trendsetter - 1.2 - "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Nirvana - 8
Love Song - 4.9 - "At Last", Etta James - 10
One-Hit Wonder - 9.2 - "What's Going On?", 4 Non Blondes - 4
Party Song - 7.2 - "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer", George Thorogood - 6
Crossover Hit - 10.9 - "Slam", Onyx and Biohazard - 9
Cover - 8.9 - "A Little Help From My Friends", Joe Cocker - 6
Anti-Establishment - 5.2 - "American Idiot", Green Day - 6

Total: 67
Analysis: The Hendrix pick was an absolute disaster. I hate that 4 Non Blondes song. Sorry. The Green Day song isn't even their best AE song.

ntndeacon
Classic - 10.5 - "My Way", Frank Sinatra - 7
Epic - 2.5 - "Another Brick in the Wall", Pink Floyd - 8
Arena Rocker - 6.5 - "Do You Feel Like We Do", Peter Frampton - 9
Trendsetter - 1.6 - "Good Vibrations", The Beach Boys - 5
Love Song - 7.6 - "Baby Love", The Supremes - 5
One-Hit Wonder - 9.6 - "Tainted Love", Soft Cell - 7
Party Song - 8.5 - "Shout", The Isley Brothers - 10
Crossover Hit - 4.5 - "I Can't Stop Loving You", Ray Charles - 4
Cover - 5.6 - "Proud Mary", Ike and Tina Turner - 8
Anti-Establishment - 3.6 - "London Calling", The Clash - 9

Total: 72
Analysis: Not a big fan of the Ray Charles pick, as I thought he had other songs that were better crossover picks. Great AE pick, and wonderful value for the Party song. Solid draft, but not an eye-popper.

vtbub
Classic - 1.5 - "Yesterday", The Beatles - 10
Epic - 3.7 - "Layla", Derek and the Dominoes - 10
Arena Rocker - 6.4 - "Enter Sandman", Metallica - 8
Trendsetter - 2.6 - "Rock Around the Clock", Bill Haley and The Comets - 9
Love Song - 5.7 - "My Love", Paul McCartney - 3
One-Hit Wonder - 9.7 - "Walking on Sunshine", Katrina and the Waves - 6
Party Song - 8.4 - "Louie Louie", The Kingsman - 9
Crossover Hit - 10.4 - "On The Road Again", Willie Nelson - 8
Cover - 4.4 - "I Will Always Love You", Whitney Houston - 8
Anti-Establishment - 7.6 - "Cop Killer", Body Count - 8

Total : 79
Analysis: Averaging nearly an 8 is pretty strong, even stronger considering that I rated the Love Song pick a 3 (not even McCartney's best Love Song... "Maybe I'm Amazed"?) Great picks all around that fit well into their categories aside from that, though.

Oilers9911
Classic - 1.10 - "Hotel California", Eagles - 10
Epic - 2.1 - "American Pie", Don McLean - 7
Arena Rocker - 6.1 - "Rock and Roll All Night", Kiss - 8
Trendsetter - 8.1 - "Blitzkrieg Bop", The Ramones - 8
Love Song - 5.10 - "My Heart Will Go On", Celine Dion - 6
One-Hit Wonder - 3.10 "Macarena", Los Del Rio - 7
Party Song - 7.10 - "Old Time Rock n Roll", Bob Seger - 4
Crossover Hit - 9.10 - "Epic", Faith No More - 4
Cover - 10.1 - "Sweet Jane", Cowboy Junkies - 10
Anti-Establishment - 4.1 "We're Not Gonna Take It", Twisted Sister - 7

Total: 71
Analysis: Weak Crossover and Party song picks. Also, I think "American Pie" is miscast as an Epic... would've been far and away the #1 One Hit Wonder in my mind. Similarly miscast is "Rock and Roll All Night"... would've been a better party song, I think. Not a bad draft, maybe the best Cover Song of all. Love that version of "Sweet Jane".

Small problem with that ... it wasn't MacLean's only hit

In 1980, McLean had an international number one hit with the Roy Orbison classic, Crying. Only following the record's success overseas was it released in the USA, becoming a top 10 hit in 1981.

Small problem with that ... it wasn't MacLean's only hit

from wiki

And his Vincent Van Gogh tribute song is almost as well known...

You pulled that out like you've been waiting for it to come up. Nobody remembers that shit but wikipedia nerds.

I really think "one hit wonder" is in the eye of the beholder. I'd be willing to bet that 90% of one-hit wonders had another song that was popular somewhere at some point.

1) Maple Leafs
2) Subby
3) ntndeacon

I probably would have had lordscarlet in there, but it dawned on me that I had no idea what his classic song was. The fact that it is supposed to be a classic, and I have no idea what it was, you're out of the top 3.

When I first went to vote, I figured Oilers would get a spot. However, many of the songs just didn't suit my tastes. Plus, his cover I never heard of either the original or the version he picked.

ntndeacon took third because Framptom never struck me as an arena rocker. I just never understood the fascination with him. The other issue is that his party song was not the best version of the song.

Subby takes second. His group was solid across the board, particularly at classic, epic, and cover. But, he receives some demerits for Lola and Like a Virgin.

Maple Leafs is the surprise winner on my ballot. The main reason is that his songs fit the categories and all of them are great songs. When I want to get some with the wife, what do I want on? Unchained Melody, check. One-hit wonder, 99 Luftballons, come on, he even went with the superior German version, props for that. Party song, 1999, one of the top 2 in the category. Classic, Louis Armstrong? You better believe it, I still break out into versions of that while driving. Finally, you want an arena rocker, it doesn't get much better than Sweet Child of Mine, I would have prefered Paradise City, but that's splitting hairs.

Well, I'm 31 so I've never heard of it. I stand by my assessment, flawed though it may be.

As I've said to others, go listen to a clip, you know it. :) But fair enough on the logic. :p

Actually, that one was a product of having spent waaaay too many hours playing song after song after song on the radio. As a country station, we didn't play Pie, but we did have Cryin' in the gold library.

You'd be amazed at the otherwise useless things that stick in your head after doing that for like thirteen years. Stuff like
1) Who originally recorded "Achy Breaky Heart", only to have it flop on the charts?
2) Under what name did Randy Travis first release a single to radio?

In this case, one of those random bits just happened to come in handy ;)

I think the only thing I was surprised at was the lack of interest in Ode to Billie Joe. I wasn't trying to get cute or go obscure (my strategy was to win the popular songs vote). I needed a female Crossover and that was the best one I could think of, knowing how popular it was in the 60s and it got tons of air play during the 70s. Too old school, probably.

Even though I'm way late, I'll do the whole rate each song and add 'em up thing as well. Perhaps some bonus points at the end for 'best album' (so to speak... ie, instead of some bad, some good, a consistent flow). Just to have my damned vote recorded for posterity, dammit!
