A few weeks ago, someone started a thread about a game called Shady O'Grady's Rising Star. I tried out the demo and decided to buy the game.
First, the bad news.
The game crashes. The farther you get in a career, the more oftan it crashes. It does autosave after every week, so you generally don't lose much. Maybe a few minutes of play, so it's not that bad. It's bearable. Hopefully it stays that way and doesn't get too bad. For the first year of the game, it hardly crashes at all, but in my third year, I noticed every 2-3 months of play, it would crash.
It's a little easy to make money, especially after you get a manager. When you reach a certain stage, you can get $800-$1000 per gig, which is fine, but then you'll also get gigs that pay by per ticket sold. These are unrealistically huge money makers. My popularity would be in the teens (out of a hundred, I think) for just a handful of cities and I was sitting on $2mil.
The good news is that while the game is repetitive, but I've found it pretty addicting. It's complex enough to keep me interested, but simple enough that I don't feel bogged down.
Early in the game, making money is a bit annoying. You can landscape up to 2 parks in a day, which is very easy ($200 per and just a click of the button) but only 5 parks in a city (at least Philadelphia, where I've started my games) so you can't abuse that. Each park can be landscaped once a week and you take a little hit to Happiness. You can also do "FedEx missions" for various stores and clubs in the city. You can get paid $100-$300 for the simple ones. You can also be offered more difficult ones (time-limit ones) for more. You can only do one job for a store/club per day.
Another way is to buy used equipment from a music store, repair it and resell it to them. Each band meber can "repair" 4 times a day, and gains +1 in repair for each successful repair.
You can also get paid for doing gigs, obviously, but in the early game, you are oftan playing for free as an opening act or in a "Battle of the Bands" where only the winner gets paid. You can also sell shirts and CDs at your shows, but in the early game, you can only buy so many shirts to sell, and only a few if any get sold. And you don't start with nearly enough to produce a CD and sell (maybe a crappy single or EP).
But like I said, once you start getting popular, even a little, it becomes very easy to make money.
Anyway, there is a demo of the game: http://www.gilligames.com/

And now, for my profile.
Band Name: Synapse
Name: Jason Wood
Role: Lead Vocals
Level 1
Playing: 6
Songwriting: 3
Stage Presence: 4
Production: 1
Repair: 1
Business: 1
The first three are pretty self-explanitory. Production is for recording songs if you choose to have the band self-produce the CD. Only the highest Production attribute in the band is used. Repair, how well you repair used equipment. Business, the higher this is, the cheaper you can buy equipment. Only the highest attribute in the band is used. I always just leave the last 3 at 1 and never put any points into them. I always hire a producer when making a CD and try to find one band member that has a decent Business rating.
Ego: 50 <-- This tells you how much the band member expects to be part of the song writing process, and how much he expects the songs (s)he helps to write get played. For your created profile, it's always 50.
Birthdate: February 9, 1981

I start off with $1,000 and no bandmates.
My first order of business is to go buy a microphone (and I can buy up to 3 Effects Processors, but I'll probably only be able to affford 1)
(Technically, the first thing I do is drive up and down every street in the city so that I know where everything is. In the game, you drive around a 3D map of the city. I found this feature to be kind of annoying, but once you get a manager, you can just get chauffeured around for $100 a pop.)
I buy a microphone (Playing +10, Song Writing +11) for $210. I also buy a Stage Pre. +2 effects processor for $127. (I won't bother typing out the name of all of the equipment, just the stats it modifies.)
My Modified stats: Playing: 16, Songwriting 14, Stage Presence 6
I also find 3 musicians willing to join me in my musical crusade.
Guitar: Billy Gooden - Level 8
Playing: 9 (20) <--- (#) is the modified attribute from equipment.
Songwriting: 25 (40)
Stage Presence: 8 (30)
Production: 13
Repair: 23
Business: 8
Ego: 64
Will need to be part of writing every song.
Bass Guitar: Cole Leech - Level 8
Playing: 10 (15)
Songwriting: 15
Stage Presence: 15 (21)
Production: 15
Repair: 12
Business: 19
Ego: 22
Can leave out of song writing process, but will have him write here and there.
Drums: Danny Dockery - Level 6
Playing: 22 (29)
Songwriting: 7 (15)
Stage Presence: 6 (24)
Production: 16
Repair: 14
Business: 1
Ego: 8
Very low ego means I can concentrate soley on Playing and Stage Presence when he levels up.
Now my band has a Rhythm rating of 85 and a Melody rating of 75 (out of 100). I'll probably need to get another band member at some point. I'll add either another guitar player (which will put as at 100 for both), or maybe a keyboardist (will put us at 100 Rhythm, but only 95 Melody). But for now, we're fine.
When you hire musicians for your band, they are usually wearing goofy costums (I guess the game just randomly picks clothes for them, and they oftan look really stupid. :) ). Next order of business was to head to a clothing store to buy some simple, cheap clothes for everyone. Lucikly, the three new guys had enough of their own money to cover expenses.
They all had a few hundred left over, so I head back to the music store to see what cheap equipment they can buy to give them a little most boost to their attributes.
Cole gets a +2 Stage Pre. effects processor (SP: 23), Danny gets a +1 SP effects (SP: 25), and Billy gets +9 Playing guitar strings (Playing: 25 - replaced +4 Playing string).
So now we are a band. Synapse is formed.

Now, it's time to start spreading the word of Synapse.
They way you build repuation is to go watch other bands play. This will do several things. 1) Raises Happiness and Inspiration. 2) Gain reputation with the Bar/Club (Theaters and Arenas do not have a repuation rating) 3) Gain Relationship with the bands who play (in Bars/Clubs. Again does not apply in Theaters/Arenas).
But, going to a show costs money, usually around $100.
Tonight, 3 very popular bands are playing at a club, so it's a good shot at gaining a bit of Relationship with bands that will bring in people. Hopefully, one day, they might ask me to open for them at a gig.

A few house rules before I continue:
1) No taking gigs that pay per ticket when my popularity in the city is less than 70. Just picking an arbitrary number there. I may raise it or lower it based on how the games plays. This was one I forgot to mention earlier.
2) To compensate for the bug that money is not being subtracted when watching gigs, I can only take 3 jobs per week. And that includes all the jobs available, including landscaping.
2a) To keep myself from looking around for the highest pay job, I can only do 1 job per day, and I have to take the first job I come to (if it's just a $100 job, I have to do it instead of looking for a $200+ job). Also, I am limiting myself to 1 landscaping job per week.

Wrote a song
The way you write a song in this game is play a memory style game. You flip over cards 2 at a time (they all have a musical instrument). I think there are 8 symbols. How much time you have and how many cards you have to turn over are determined by how much inspiration the writers have. How many points each match counts is determined by how much ability the writers have in Songwriting.
My plan is to write a dozen or so cover songs (the game does not distinguish, I'm just giving my first songs titles of real songs - IOW, that's not an option in the game, you just write songs. I'm calling them covers for the purpose of this dynasty), continue to perform them but not release them. When I get to the level where I can write quality songs, then I'll start recording them.
Song: N.I.B. (cover)
Quality: 23
Play Skill: 1
The quality can go up as I practice the song.
Writing the song gave me a level (you get 10 points per level)
Add 3 to Playing = 9 (19)
Add 4 to Songwriting = 7 (18)
Add 3 to Stage Presence = 7 (9)

How many songs do you need before you can participate in a Battle of the Bands?
Six. That's also the amount you need to be an opening act. You can also get hired to give a set of 9 or 12 songs. 12 is when you're headlining and 9 is when you're in between headlining and opening.

If I'm not mistaken, Ska is some kind of punk but with trumpets and stuff like that and a more "friendly" sound (what a bad description); I think the band Reel Big Fish is Ska.
That game looks great, I've always wanted to have a game like that and the old "Rockstar" was kinda lame so I'm certainly going to try out this one.

I'm now running 1.02, but the previous game I played (to about 2003) was, I think, on 1.01.
EDIT: As for Ska, it was popular in the 90s, but most of the bands that found mainstream appeal were of the subgenre "ska punk" (think Sublime and Mighty Mighty Bosstones)

It's repetitive, but I don't think moreso than most other "text-sim" type games. The only thing that annoys me is having to do odd jobs and drive around the city. I personally would have liked if it were just text on screen and you made your choice on where to go in the city instead of having to drive there.
What you get in the demo is pretty much what you get in the game. In the demo, you can't hire a manager, go to other cities, and I think you can't record you songs and release them on CDs. But, what you do in the demo is what you'll be doing most of the time you're playing.

Week of July 9th - 15th, 2000
Things are not looking good for Synapse. There's a lot of tension between all of the band members. I can't write any new songs because everyone hates everyone. It might be time to kick everyone out and start fresh. That would suck since I would need to write a new batch of songs since no new band members will enjoy playing songs other people wrote. Let's see how the rest of the month goes, but my manager already suggested kicking the drummer out.
One problem is I have fallen behind on buying and upgrading equipment. I need to increase my band member's stage presence and playing to help increase our rate of popularity increase.

Looks like you're starting to do better in Philly. Do you think it's because of your second guitar player?
Possibly. Both of my Rhythm and Melody ratings are at 92 now (they were 85 and 75 respectively). I'm sure some of it was just luck too. Now that I got my GOOD manager, though, things are really starting to take off.
Problem is right now Billy Gooden (guitar player, second best song writer) isn't getting along with Danny Dockery (drums) and Cole Leech (bass guitar). Hopefully as things pick up, they'll calm down. That's what happened in my last game.

I downloaded the demo and tried it out. I'm still on the fence about the game. It's surprisingly addictive but I have to think the repetitive nature of the game will get old pretty fast.

Billy Gooden and Danny Dockerty are pissing me off. The relationships between bandmates are not improving. I only have 1 gig after the 16th, on the 28th, and then just one after the New Year. If I have to, I will boot them and find replacements and use that time to get all of my songs repracticed.

End of 2000
We took a bit of a step backwards in December after I kicked Gooden and Dockerty out of the band. I'm still spending every cent possible to upgrade Glenda Mancici's equipment as well as Reggie Wayman's. I've just started replacing my cover songs with originals.
Here are some stats on the year
Money Earned: $70,193
T-Shirts Sold: 673 (Earned $4,711)
Managers Hired: 4 (Managers Quit: 3)
Total Hotel Damages: $1,215
Total Audience: 49,515
Gigs Performed: 79
Songs Performed: 699
Awards
Battle of the Bands: Feb 18th, April 21st, May 5th, August 25th, Oct 13th.
End of Year Popularity
Philly: 11
New York: 9
Hartford: 2
Baltimore: 2
Wash DC: 2
It's going to take me a month or two to get my band's stage presence back up to where it was. After that, we should be better since the songs I will be playing will be better.

We missed our gig in Geenville. A problem with the game that occurs, not oftan, but it does happen where your manager will schedule gigs too closely together. I traveled to Greenville right after our gig in Virginia Beach, but it takes two days to get to Greenville, but our gig was the very next day. So we missed it. (No we didn't, I did something stupid, see next 'entry')

Crap. Haha, I just realized that the missed gig was my fault. I accidently traveled to Greensborough after the gig in Virginia Beach instead of Greenville. Opps (but what I said does happen occasionally. That's why I never "giged" in DC, the game would accidently put DC and NY gigs back-to-back and I wouldn't ba able to make the second gig. It seems to be fine when scheduleing a tour, which is why the missed gig seemed out of place).

I noticed you leave the price of the CD's at the default. I changed that to make it more real. Like, $15 - $17 for full length CD's. And $5 for CD singles.

Yeah, I forgot to drop the single price down (did that a little bit ago) but am just leaving the full-length CD price at $10 (figuring I am still pretty much unknown and need to get my name out). I'll probably raise them when I get up in popularity.

I've now bought this game. I blame you, sabotai, for bringing it to FOFCs attention and the developer for making an engrossingly fun demo.

Glad you guys are liking the game. I was the one who mentioned it a while back in the "off topic" area.
Todd (the developer) is very active and responsive in the forums to bug reports, and is usually very quick to get them fixed. He's also very open suggestions and improvements.
I'm still playing the game quite a bit off and on. I usually play for 30 to 60 minutes or so at a time anymore with my schedule. Helps break up some of the repitition (sp?).
I'm a moderator over at his forums and encourage people to speak out about what they like/don't like. Good to know what people are liking/not liking. With more people getting involved, hopefully that'll spark a sequal to the game with more features, etc.
If you haven't already, check out the forums. Have some pictures and "sort of" dynasties over there. I did a little write up on my punk band "Velocity" diamond record album "Cycle of Hate" in the form of a VH1 Classic Album presentation.
Cheers!

Our manager is scheduling another tour with Bind Beside Addict right now, this one lasting several months. The tour will be 78 gigs long, lasting from the end of July to the end of November.
I'm probably going to stop doing daily gig updates and do weekly updates (since it's really just gotten repeatative at this level). I'll make special note of when we play a really big place and anything else that is noteworthy.

Did you sell enough of the album to hit your bonus level from the record company?

Yeah, awhile ago. I only had to sell 5,000 copies ($50,000) for them to get their money back.
