I'm sure there is not but is it merely something like 2/3 intelligence + 1/3 leadership ? are these the only factors or does personality factor in ? It seems like VERY HIGH intelligence gives a good probability of Mentorship but Mentors are also player's with average intelligence. Is a mentor always a mentor when traded to another team (unless that other team has a player with higher "scores" on the mentorship scale already)?

I hgave yet to see any firm formula that unerringly predicts mentorship. Based on the 2004 game, I think most of us concluded that there is some stage early in each season when dice are rolled for each player (in that version, I think it was each player 6th year or older) and clearly weighed against some combination of intelligence and leadership, possibly with some other lesser factors. But any simple formula you could find would usually have a few weird outliers -- one guy who seems like he ought to be a mentor, but wasn't... and the converse. So, the best guess is that it's not quite a formula, but rather just a correlation.
If you move a player out of his position group, he loses his mentorship. But I think he may regain it, in the new group, the following year. If a player is released or traded, there is no effect on his mentor status, the ratings of surrounding players do not seem to be any factor at all.
Not quite as firm footing as I might like - much of this has yet to be tested much in the new game -- but I hope that helps.

2/3 intelligence
I admit, though, I like where you're going with that. *grin*

So if a mentor is traded to a new team he is still a mentor on that new team automatically? that would mean that it's not a probability roll once the "tag" is attached to him... It would also mean that the "mentee" group does not have any correlation to the mentee --- ie a mentor needs to be a quantitavely higher in certain factors than those being mentored...
--- Does personality ever factor in on who is a mentor?

Correct on all counts. Each player seems to get this dice roll one time per season, early in the preseason. That's it - from then on, it sticks forever, unoless you change him out of that position.

It can't be that strong a correlation, but I don't think we can rule it out completely.

Experience also plays in to the equation.

Reggie Hardy became a mentor in his *fifth* year, fwiw.

You sure, or is that just the cumulative effect of the dice-rolling?
Not disputing you, just curious if you've looked that closely.

There is a definite correlation between experience and likelihood to be a mentor, but I really hadn't considered that as a possibility. In FOF2K4, I observed that the younger the mentor, the more likely he was on the very high end in terms of intelligence and leadership, which would be a likely indicator of it being a weighted formula combined with a dice roll in the old game. I haven't done enough checking in the new game to form an opinion, but it certainly *could* be the result of multiple dice rolls.

Here was a study I did on all the mentors in a 2k4 league:
http://www.fof-gefl.com/upload/mrbigglesworth/mentors.jpg
X axis is experience, and Y is intelligence plus leadership
My conclusion was that you needed to have a combined 150+ to become a mentor before your 7th year, then the requirement gradually gets lower. There are a lot more mentors in 2k7 though.

awesome study Mr Biggs --- 2k7 I have a 114 (I+L) who is a 7 year vet so, as you said, Jim has greatly increased the frequency

Looking through my GEFL roster, it's changed a LOT. I originally thought he changed it from just there being a chance to become a mentor, to it being a certainty. But the following are mentors on my team:
Exp Int Lead
12 38 16
13 15 58
5 81 47
...so there must be new qualifications.
