View Full Version : Daughter Gets a Tat

So my 20-year old stepdaughter (who I have raised since she was 10) comes home on Spring Break last night and this morning asks me, "Dad, do you want to see my new tattoo?"

Uh, no. No I don't.

Thank the Lord that it's on her foot, and not one of those lower back tats. And I handled it well (no yelling, just a noncommital "oh, isn't that nice"). But jeez, I'm too young for this shit.

Knowing a lot of 20 year olds, you should be thrilled she calls you "Dad."

Also, if my daughter ever got a tattoo on her lower back, that shit would be laser-removed within a week, and she'll stay in the damn house until then. I don't care where the money has to come from, she'll miss a semester of college if necessary, but it's getting done.

Tattoos on chicks are disgusting. I don't so much mind the little well hidden ones (well I don't mind them much) but those ugly ask back and shoulder tattoos are the worst. They don't call them tramp stamps for nothing.

I wouldn't want my non-existant daughter allowing anyone to get the impression that she's a slut due to a lower back tat. Vince Vaughn put it nicely in Wedding Crashers: "Might as well be a bulls-eye."

When my daughter (that I don't have yet) is 20, she can get a tattoo if she wants. I just probably won't look at it or talk about it. She can make her decisions, but that doesn't mean I have to give her the attention that she wants it to generate (not saying that would be her only motivation, but the "hey look at my tattoo" would be a pretty big tip-off). And yes, I know it's not necessarily an attention-grab, but I would probably treat it as one and not acknowledge it.

I don't know what the big deal is, either. About half of people I know have tatoos, and that's including family members (even my mom has a tatoo on her ankle). Yes, the lower back ones are bulleye tats, but all of the girls I am friends with know not to get those (but I think a bullseye tat is more of an indictation of naive-ness, not whore-ness, since all of the whores I know don't get them :) ).

I've always found ass-hats strangely attractive....

I would have no problem if my daughter gets a tat at 20 (she's 3 now) if she got it at 15, thats another story.

Of course I have 3 and got my first one at 12, so that may influence my decision.

Oh, I don't have a problem with tattoos. I guess I don't even really have a problem with my DAUGHTER getting a tattoo. It's just that I never really thought the words "my daughter" and "tattoo" would be in the same sentence... or at least, not this early in my life.

No pics either fellas. It's on the top of her foot anyway. What are you, sick foot fetishists? Jeez.

Now if you want to admire the lower back tat (or bullseye) my wife got last year, I'm fine with that.

I really wouldn't care whether or not my daughter (I don't have kids yet), got a tattoo or not. If she was 17 and needed my approval, I would talk her out of it if it were something like a neck tattoo. As soon as she turned 18, it wouldn't be up to me how she spends her cash.

And I don't think having a tattoo on any part of your body automatically banishes you to sluthood, but I guess that's just my opinion.

For me, it's not that it automatically makes you a slut...it's that it causes other people to first think of the girl as a slut. That's what I would have a problem with as a father.

feel free to check back with us when you actually have kids

As a parent, I have to ask the basis for thsi statement.
DO you feel that all parents are anti-tatoo of their kids?
Or is it a personal prejudice against tatoos in general?

I am not "into" tatoos, or ink work, but I do have a few and see nothing wrong with them. I think some people take it overboard and to a point that it is anti-social (forehead and face work comes to mind) andc I also oppose anyone walking in and picking something out of a cut book. But if you choose to memorialize a significant part of your make-up by using a permanent marker, I say more power to you. [For example, I have 3 tatoos. One is a my college's logo with my state symbol embedded inside a tribute to my home, and the achievement that obtaining a degree was to me, #2 is each of my kids names on my shoulders a tribute to my kids and a constant reminder that their fate and success is responsibility that I carry, #3 is a memorial to my best friend who just died in January. It is still a work in progress and will be finished this weekend. But its just a simple way for me to keep a piece of him with me. BTW I am a fairly successful, conservative appearing person and they have been seen by less than 20 people ever.]

Making a rash judgement about someone based on their having or not having a tatoo, is akin to ostracizing someone based on their sexual preference, religious beliefs, hair color or any other matter of personal preference. All of these are characteristics, but they do not automatically denegrate the person as a whole.

I am really amazed at how this struck me as so wrong, as really I am not in that scene if you will.

sorry, my reference had nothing to do with tattoos. It was the last line: "As soon as she turned 18, it wouldn't be up to me how she spends her cash." The misconception that parenting ends when kids turn 18 amuses me. It's certainly not limited to people who have yet to join the ranks of parenthood, but it does seem to be more prevelant among that crowd.

I apologize for not making that clearer.

Your control starts at 100% and starts to fade almost immediately after birth, until it eventually goes away completely. Your influence, on the other hand, will always be there in some form or another. It will just manifest itself in different ways.

I don't have any problems with well-placed tattoos. Even though it's against my religion, I would have no problem getting one if I ever felt the need to make a permanent memory or pay tribute to someone/something. Same thing goes for my kids. But I would draw the line on a lower back tattoo for a daughter, or any (even well-covered) tattoo on any of my kids if they were just getting it "because it looked cool."

I have 2 tattoos, one that my folks know about. They found it when I was in the hospital in June 2004, struggling to wake up from my last ankle surgery (the anesthesiologist had given me a drug I was allergic to, so I was not waking up properly and was having a lot of breathing issues). I don't recall much from that day, but I do remember my gown being open in back so the nurses could listen to me try to breathe and hearing my mom say, "Oh, Kristin," in a very exasperated tone.

Still makes me laugh, I'd had it for 4ish years by the time she found it...and it was designed by my brother.

I know, I have a little sister who I helped raise due to a divorce. She actually has gotten into the goth side of things to a small extent, but so far at least she hasn't wanted a tattoo. But if she was 18 and decided to get one, I would probably react much the way Cam did. Of course, she still can't date until she's 25.

This is my thoughts too.

I feel like such a wimp compared to you guys. I think tatoos are nasty and I will never have one. I have never, nor will I ever date a guy with a tatoo. Nobody in my family has one either. The only girls I have ever known to have tatoos have all been 'sluts' or were easy. My senior year of high school I knew of 7 girls with visible tatoos. 6 of those 7 have had a baby since we have graduated 5 years ago.
