I'm curious about the body spray market. Is this for guys who would be too insecure to wear cologne? The only time I've ever owned this stuff was basically in locker room settings, where I didn't want to reek between changing out of sweaty clothes and finding my way into a real shower.
I'm really just curious, as I've always found the body spray stuff outside my realm of hygiene. I'm an antipersperant/deodorant + cologne guy.
JeeberD

I think the main thing is that it's a much more economical alternative to cologne. A decent bottle of cologne runs, what, $50? You can get a can of body spray for like a tenth of that price. And guessing from the ads, they're aiming towards the college kid demographic...
For the record, I'm a deodorant and cologne guy myself, but I did try Axe out a while back. I stopped using it 'cause the wife didn't like it.

On a tangentially related note, why are there always body spray commercials as part of "before movie" commercials at the theater? Is there something about the movie going public that screams "I want body spray"?

For the Body Spray question -
I use it some. Mainly I am not a big fan of cologne and avoid wearing it whenever possible. Sometimes the fiance really wants me to wear something, so it's a much more mild alternative.
Basically that's what it is to me - mild alternative to cologne if you don't want such a strong smell.

Saw this commercial last night and had the same general reaction that you guys did. I don't get body spray either, but I'm a cologne guy. And I assume the movie trailer thing is again aimed at high school/college guys. I remember the Axe commercial that caused some controversy a couple of years ago with the boyfriend coming over to pick up the GF and the GF's mom coming on the guy, starting to unbutton her blouse. I thought it was way over the line, especially at the height of the hot child molester stories. So I assume the young male/cheaper than cologne thing is what they are aiming at. Never used it, or even smelled it, before.
Ksyrup
03-26-2007, 08:43 AM
I don't get the "strong smell" thing about cologne...how much do you guys use? I rarely use more than 1-2 quick shots. And as far as cost, my bottles usually last 12-15 months. I'm not the guy you can smell coming down the hall, and it's something that can be controlled in my experience.

There's more to strength than quantity though...
I'm having a hard time explaining it, but it's a more "mild" smell... For instance - if you smell a stick of deoderant and a bottle of cologne - the cologne is clearly a "stronger" smell to your nose without being overpowering.
I personally am not a fan of scents overall. If I had my way, I'd just wear Deoderant and maybe some aftershave lotion.

Wow.. that was a horrible typo.
That should say "Deoderant and maybe some aftershave lotion"... And the aftershave lotion is more out of necessity (rough shave) than anything else.

I don't really use cologne for personal preference. I do it as a courtesy to others, because if I'm going to smell - and history suggests I'll smell like something - I'd rather it be pleasant. Sitting at my desk right now, I can't tell that I'm even wearing anything, so the smell not an issue for me personally and never has been. The smell wears off (on my senses) about 5 minutes after I put it on.
Deodorant, OTOH, is as much for me as others.

I just don't see how cologne helps a natural smell. I don't smell bad, the deoderant prevents that from happening at all. My co-workers, people at the store, etc. don't care whether I have an extra-pleasent chemical driven smell. They just care that I don't stink.
*shurg*... for my money, I rather a non-smelly person not adding extra smells over someone where I can smell their cologne/perfume/whatever.

I go one better... I wear only deodorant and no aftershave. My fiance does like the smell of my shaving cream, though.

Maybe it's a function of my body - I sweat a lot and lived in Florida for 15 years and, until recently, was overweight. I'm not sure I would cause an evacuation if I was de-cologned, but I don't think just deodorant would do the trick either.
If there's a chance that I would smell bad, I'd rather err on the side of caution. And again, that's probably a function of having lived in Florida...and standing in line at amusement parks with people who thought otherwise. :)

If you are aware you have potential body odor issues I'm with you. Deoderant is better than BO... and I mean that seriously.. I know that I tend to be a non-sweater and I don't generally have BO issues unless I'm doing a workout or something, and then I have the luxury of taking a shower when finished.
The worst person is the person that has BO issues and either doesn't care are refuses to try and address it.

But at the same time, who wants to smell BO with an obvious attempt to cover it with cologne? :) It's much like the bathroom aerosol spray issue.
