If you run a pass play where your back(s) does not have a route to run, why would you not put him on blitz pick-up? I guess my bigger question is what do the other receivers do when they are not the primary targets? does the rB flare out if the play breaks down or just pick his nose if he's not on blitz duty?

Yeah, its something that I have really scratched my head over. I think its safe to assume the back will go out as a dump off option.

I have a back in the vNFL that is 100/100 in blitz pick up, yet the AI only thinks he should stay in 25% or something. I have been keeping him in 100% of the time, and I have the least (or very close to) sacks in the league given up.

But, and perhaps a big but, my passing game is not really setting the world on fire as I would like just lately, although it was great early in the year. Its roughly what you'd hope from the personnel overall, but certainly nothing special. I wonder if the dump off would save the odd pick by the QB forcing the ball? Its all guess work at this point, its crying out for either a study or a bit of clarification I think.

I have experimented with keeping him in as the AI suggests, but he isn't the greatest of receivers and doesn't appear to be getting much more involved. But such a small sample isn't enough for any real conclusions.

May also be a question of drawing defensive attention - the RB/FB/TE not going out may lead to more double-coverage situations, or may draw a zone more or less thin.

You could be right. Probably you have to guess right that the blitz is coming for the blitz pick-up to contribute to success. Otherwise you keep a blocker in unnecessarily.

Unless if your line stinks and gives up 9 sacks a game or something....
