A wide receiver is only valuable if he gets thrown the ball. From studies of FOF 2004 and from anecdotal experience with FOF 2007, "route running" appears to be one of the biggest indicators of how often a receiver is targeted. It is a vital component to any star receiver particularly if other guys on the team who aren't as talented have high route running skills and are at risk of siphoning off completions from the star WR.
