That the worst airline disaster in history occurred, when two 747s collided on the runway at an airport in the Canary Islands. 583 people were killed in the disaster. This tragedy was the impetus to use English as a worldwide standard for airport signage and the creation of common commands and responses between air traffic control and pilots.

I remember reading a Life magazine after that disaster that had many of the photos you see around the internet from that incident. Horrific, horrific accident.
